The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

World Record Coaster #18 of 18! Green Lantern: First Flight is the First-in-the-U.S. Spinning Coaster and opens to the public on Friday! Brave a never-been-done-before completely vertical zigzag track, this spinning coaster takes coaster riding to another galaxy. Six Flags Magic Mountain is the "Coaster Capital of the World".

Since they mention the never-been-done-before RIGHT after 'First-in-the-U.S.' they are acknowledging that it is not the first first ever, just here in the US.

Great just what we need, more confusion to cause the GP to say "weird things." But on the bright side I'm surprised how well DC Universe [and Green Lantern] turned out.

I was a single rider today but there were no others that I saw. I hooked up pretty quickly with a group of three. They wouldn't let me ride alone. I got the impression it was an attempt to maximize capacity and had nothing to do with weight distribution.

No, they won't let you ride alone, it can create a very uncomfortable ride. Same rule as on Insane.

Speaking of single rider lines...SFMM really needs to work on their policies. I went yesterday, and when my group got into the park, the lines were terrible. We figured we'd use the well advertised single rider line for Viper since we didn't care about being split up, so we walk up the line, and the attendant tells us to go back down. Even though there were multiple signs stating that there was a single rider line, they apparently wont let you use it (at least if it's a busy day).

A few things about the new DC section from a recovering comics nerd:

It's great to see several of the lesser known characters used in the arch and theming, even it's mainly to promote diversity.

After all, it's nice to see Cyborg bumped up to headliner, but that makes sense since DC's obviously pushing the white Hal Jordan Green Lantern because of the movie, rather the the previously pushed (from the Justice League cartoon) black John Stewart. And I'm sure that's part of why they're using the current Blue Beetle, who's Latino, even though you can't see his face in the costume.

It's funny to see them theming a pizza restaurant after Teen Titans, based on the cartoon, but using the current comics version of the group -- that had never actually talked about pizza.

And it's interesting to see them using the classic 80's to two years ago Wonder Woman costume, rather than the current one in the comics. Then again, the entire DC Universe is devolving in a few months, so I imagine they'll go back to the classic costume.

I was glad to see amazing Green Lantern comics writer Geoff Johns get the credit here, since it's mostly his version of the characters that's spotlighted in the movie, for which he gets little credit. Geoff's been THE driving force behind the entire DC Universe for several years now.

But why have a live Green Lantern who looks nothing like either the Hal Jordan of the comics or Ryan Reynolds of the movie?

And the comic nerd in me enjoyed all the attention to detail in the area that will probably go unnoticed by most people.

Of course, all of this theming will likely go unchanged. even long after DC has changed and updated the characters. The theming on all of the Superman rides in the chain still shows the characters as they were back in the 90's, even though most of them have changed dramatically since then. (Especially the look of Superb, as well as the entire character of Supergirl.)

Just looking through some of the videos that have been shot from the media day and B-Roll the park has provided and I'm a little surprised to see that the car only seems to flip once, towards the end. I haven't seen a single video yet that shows the type of rides that Grona Lund's Insane was offering where we would get an "average" of 4 flips per ride.

Did anyone get 2 flips or more on Green Lantern?

^ Six Flags seem to be being cautious by properly balancing the cars, on balanced rides on Insane it only flips once, at the very end. During a recent ERS had on Insane, we had one ride which was oddly balanced which seemed to just stay upside down for the first 3/4 of the ride (hangtime!) Then a completely unbalanced ride which gave us 5 1/2 flips, great fun and very intense.

I am slightly confused as to why there is a maximum height limit on Lantern, as Insane did not obviously have one stated on any signs?

Is this a case of US Parks being more paranoid than Europe?

So if anyone is too tall to ride Lantern, head over to Sweden!!!!

^ I'm not sure, but I know when we were riding Insane during normal park hours, we were still getting 2-3 flips per ride, but when they would let us ride it during ERT (and really let it go balls out), we were getting an "average of 4", some people getting 5 to 6 flips!

We got 2 flips on our last ride yesterday (the one we didn't get video on) but they certainly made sure the cars were balanced. Even with that, I still completely enjoyed the ride. I thought it would be all about the flips, but the positive/negative G's were very cool.

In talking to Neal yesterday he laughed at my comment that the next time we would all get to ride the ride (due to lines) would be at WCB next year.

Great coverage guys, it was great seeing you all yesterday!!!

One thing I did notice, and something that was kind of surprising ... no lockers.

Not even cubbies to put your stuff in. At least I didn't see any. Wonder if they will be using the Batman ones? They seem pretty far away though.

^You know, I was thinking about the lockers/where people are going to put loose items to ride. I didn't see any sort of lockers either. Guess they figure the loading's going to be slow anyway, might as well just have people put stuff on the side?

Looks like I may (key word may) enjoy this ride. I was expecting a "spin and puke" ride, but this looks to be (if they load properly) a controlled ride. Maybe I'll enjoy it, but I won't hold my breath. I'm looking just to get the ride credit, but I may enjoy. I don't like X2, hence my worry on this one. We'll see...

^ Gotta be honest, I'm not a big fan of the flipping either, and to me, the flipping (again, we got 2 max) was the least exciting thing. The positive/negative g's were the best part for me.

Okay I'll trust your review. I'll definitely ride it once next time I'm back in LA. Again, I'll do it once for the credit, but I hope I like it.

I have to say, I am shocked at how little the cars are rocking/flipping in the video. Insane seemed to rock a hell of a lot more, including more complete flips even when the cars were completely balanced.

Maybe it just needs a little breaking in.

This is what I am hoping. Afterall we did ride Insane several months after it opened.

I am sure its still a great ride, but i personally loved insane better when in spun.
