The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

^ Glad you got a good ride on GL:FF. Sadly those good rides are the exception, not the rule (as you know).

I was glad as well, I was actually really hesitant about going on with my buds because of the horrible rides I had in the past. Good thing that wasn't the case and I had the best ride on GL I had and probably will have for a while. Hopefully SFMM can run it right more often.

Found out I'm getting sent to LA for work in a couple of weeks, and I've decided to stay an extra day so I can visit SFMM. I was there last spring and wasn't terribly impressed with the park as a whole, but I'm hoping to enjoy the S:EFK, LL:DoD, and FT credits that weren't available then. I thought Ninja was a surprisingly enjoyable coaster (and may have been the highlight of the trip), but I really would have loved to get a second ride in on X2 (first one blew my mind a bit).

I'm going to be there on Saturday the 17th, so I'm expecting it to be quite busy. I'm planning on getting a platinum flash pass to maximize my riding efficiency, but I would really prefer to avoid paying an extra $15/ride for X2 & FT if at all possible. My big question is this: What is the best strategy going to be for first thing in the morning given that I really want to hit both those rides more than once and need to pick up a flash pass for everything else? Make a beeline for Full Throttle & try to get a ride or two in before the line gets too crazy then go pick up the flash pass & deal with the X2 line? I've heard that X2's line can get reasonably short later in the afternoon. Does that hold true for Saturdays as well? And what's the deal with early admission? I've got a Discover Card and a gold season pass. Is FT a ride that opens on time (or early), or does it usually open late (like TTD)?

I've been to a Six Flags park before where it took well over an hour to get a flash pass, despite having purchased it beforehand. Is that something I'm going to run into at SFMM as well if I don't head straight there at park opening?

Again, any and all tips are appreciated. I know it's not Cedar Point, but I'd like to maximize the enjoyment of the time I have there.

Thanks!

What is the best strategy going to be for first thing in the morning given that I really want to hit both those rides more than once and need to pick up a flash pass for everything else? Make a beeline for YOLOcoaster & try to get a ride or two in before the line gets too crazy then go pick up the flash pass & deal with the X2 line? Do you have a Six Flags Gold Pass or Discover Card? If you have either you can get in 10-15 minutes prior to the rest of the GP and head straight for X2. I'd do that even before you get your Flash Pass.

If not, then I'd suggest getting to the park no later than 9:45am to make sure you are one of the first people through the gate. Same process of heading straight for X2 applies.

If it's a busy day (and it probably will be as it's just before school for most) you are going to have to either wait for X2 or Full Throttle so it's pretty much "pick your poison". IMO, at least the Full Throttle line moves consistently so I'd rather wait in that line vs. X2.

If for some some reason you don't see X2 testing or it doesn't look like it will open with the park then I'd go to Full Throttle first.

Whatever ride you don't ride at park open I'd head back to around 3-4pm as sometimes there is a lull around those times as people are getting on water rides, etc.

Good luck.

^ X2's line tends to shorten in the afternoon where YC doesn't as much (although everything is relative, remember this is still an August Saturday) so if I had to pick I would definitely do YC first and hit X2 later in the day about 4:30 or so. For what it's worth I'm coming to the park on Saturday 8/31 with Gold FP so this is exactly what I plan on doing.

^Gold Pass is 10 minutes early and Discover is 5 minutes early.

I highly recommend heading to X2 first because although the line does shorten on Saturdays in shortens from like 2 hours to 1 hour and that line feels like it moves so slow! On the other hand, YoloCoaster gets about an hour line in the morning max due to the line that looks threatening and because they always overestimate the wait times by 30 minutes. (i.e. the line to the end of the canopy is just short of an hour, not 90 minutes as advertised.) and it usually drops to 30-45 minutes in the afternoons. That is also a much more bearable line that feels like it actually moves.

Usually doesn't take longer than 20 minutes to get a Flash Pass.

Do they have a way to tell if my gold season pass is from SFMM instead of SFOG (or do they even care)? My pass doesn't have a park name printed on it.

Do you think I would be able to hit FT w/ the early admission & then make a beeline to X2 before the line gets too bad?

Dumb luck on a Tuesday (July 30):

YOLO, one train: 40 min wait shortly after opening, another 40 min wait shortly after 4

X2, two trains: 55 min wait shortly after 3, and I get to ride a car with working sound for the first time ever.

and then...

Goliath, operating train count unknown, 90 min wait (according to ride-wait app that had been fairly accurate all day)

Superman, one train, 90 min wait

Also: I don't know why Roaring Rapids is closed for maintenance during the summer, but that sucked. As did waiting five minutes from the back of the Discover Card line, finally getting in just as they opened the gates for everyone else. That'll learn me to get there 30 minutes before opening even with the early-entrance access.

This is most likely not a scheduled rehab but more-so an unplanned downtime.

^Yea I never ride S:EFK unless it's nearly a walk-on.

^ I don't mind waiting 20 or 30 minutes since I don't get to visit the park often but if I come around the corner and see the line out the front I stop and turn around.

I've heard it's the most expensive ride in the park to operate so I have a feeling that they are extra reluctant to run both sides due to the cost of doing so. Then again they never ever use the second side of Tatsu's station which only cost the hourly wage of the extra ride ops, so who knows.

It's hit or miss with them running both sides of S:EFK. The past 2 times (February and May) they have had both sides running. The line is split at the entrance so even with both sides running you can still wait 30-45 minutes in the tunnel for the side you chose.

In terms of power consumption, I'd say the top 3 are Roaring Rapids, Jet Stream, and FT/S:EFK.

went to the park yesterday, aug 5th with bro in law and nephew from out of town.

crowded, parking was in the overflow lot, where we parked getting there around 1pm.

didn't ride too much because of the crowds, but still had a decent time. full throttle, 40min wait. drop of doom about the same or less. superman, both sides open, line a bit out of the building. i'd guess it took us roughly 40 min as well. riddler's revenge was long at one point then only about 30 min later when i rode. scream and batman both one train, so didn't bother. goliath was 90 min so skipped as well. tatsu was about an hour. both stations going, not sure how many trains. viper, walk on. lol. i never bother with x2, not a fan, at all.

the bus driver on the way back asked how many had rode colossus. then explained this is the last year and would be rebuilt as a steel coaster next. hope all the rumors are true. colossus is one of many coasters i really don't count at magic mountain. lol

Every time I catch up on this thread I'm reminded what a terrible park SFMM is! Even if I tried, I couldn't make up the stuff that goes on there. All this rehab during peak summer is amazing. While I understand that things happen, when you have this many things breaking down it really tells a lot about the maintenance at SFMM.
