The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

P. 2239: Superman: Escape from Krypton permanently closed

Recommended Posts

Yes, Six Flags typically doesn't paint their attractions as frequently as other parks, but that doesn't mean they don't understand the process of painting. Also, it is very likely that Scream is being repainted by an outside contractor due to the size and nature of the project. Don't point fingers are until you know the facts. I'm just glad to see the investment into infrastructure besides new attractions.

Which is funny because they actually tend to paint their rides more often than a certain Ohio based company and they don't generally do it over multiple seasons like that other company

I'm pretty sure Baynum Painting still does most of Six Flags painting. I know they are the company repainting S:KC at SFFT this year. They do good work.

They still have not removed all of the old Colossus track.

It was said, a very long time ago, that some of the track was staying as part of the support structure. How true that is VS the park not wanting to do more then the minimum required to make the new ride, I don't know.

You're just talking nonsense. SFMM would NEVER cut corners like that....

I dont think the park has anything to do with that discussion, that was RMC who said that wasn't it?

I think you could put it this way... SFMM definitely didn't insist on the old track removal to enhance aesthetics

This is true. The track under the lift hill is a vital part of the structure of the lift hill. If they were to the remove the track, the structure would become very unstable. Idk about the track to the right of the first turnaround, but I would imagine it is the same thing.

Honestly, considering the ride was originally built with that track...I would assume that it is an essential part of the structure. Unless it's a government contract (I'm looking at you Metro!), no one wants to spend more money than they have to by demolishing something they don't have to.

Assuming that the track serves some structural purpose, I'd much rather the park leave it in place than use money to remove it and build a new structure, as that money can then go into making the ride better. It may look a little odd, but it's certainly not going to affect the ride experience and serves as a reminder of what Colossus once was.

By the logic of this thread, the park shouldn't put their money into theming and design (every ride should look like Scream), since all the money can go towards safety and the ride. I don't think anyone is saying make the ride unsafe. In this case, I think it's no surprise (sadly) SFMM would opt not to replace the old track with a new structure that makes it look more cohesive.

With that said, I think Scream's lot is hideous, and I don't actually mind the old Colossus track staying put.

I think the way they kept the old Colossus track reminds me of how Disneyland kept Max, Buff, and Melvin at the Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh. Something caused them to be unable to move. It's hard to see, kinda like the old Colossus track will be. It's a hidden tribute. I am for it, it'll be interesting when wooden coasters go extinct at Six Flags Properties to see wooden track like with Rolling Thunder.

Yes, because every park in the same situation would opt to remove the whole lift hill structure and build a new one so it would look more cohesive when they could just leave it as is and it would be completely safe.

They would have to rebuild it from the ground up. That's what it would take to replace the old track. They can't gut the whole base of a 100 foot structure and and keep it stabilized. The track that was left goes through the structure diagonally with it's own structure. The beams for the lift go through that structure straight to the ground. Those beams that support lift hill need the structure of that old track to stabilize the the base of the lift. Normally, most coaster designers would just bridge that part of the lift hill structure, but the gap in the structure is so wide that it can't be done safely. Now could the park have just asked to have just the track removed, but leave the structure? Yes, but would you want RMC to take their torches near that lift hill again?

I hate seeing this park flattening old themed lands and tearing out trees.

Twisted Colossus is looking to be a winner, but if the area ends up anything like the Full Throttle plaza (nothing but flat concrete and no shade) I'm going to be a little bummed they didn't keep some of the old foliage to keep guests out of the scalding summer sun.

Ummm... hasn't Colossus always been the original "parking lot" coaster?
