Walt Disney World Resort Non-Park Discussion Thread

The WDW monorails were last updated in 1991 so something's going to be happening with them in the not too distant future. Maybe they'll pull a Disneyland and simply replace the trains and perform structural upkeep on the existing beams.

There's road construction happening at WDW that appears to be aimed at creating a dedicated Busway down the middle of Buena Vista Drive. The Disney Springs end is already done and it looks like they're aiming to complete this all the way back to World Drive. That should make the buses run a little more efficiently. Maybe the same will come to World Drive in conjunction with whatever's going to happen up at the MK toll booth area now that the race track is history.

Adding a new gondola system of sorts should make it that much easier to get around along with the ground improvements.

No, and this would be the one drawback with the Skyway system. Assuming this is a modern enclosed Doppelmayr (or something similar) it would need to close for severe weather. They can run in rain, but they generally can't run in lightning or high winds. The wind limit is generally pretty high on these modern lifts though, it's not like we're dealing with the Cedar Point Sky Ride here.

 

Still, I think this is a minor drawback to an otherwise awesome idea.

Osceola Parkway heading towards Animal Kingdom is getting a bus lane as well as an overpass at Victory Way to keep traffic flowing at the entrance to Wide World of Sports. The construction that is happening at the MK toll plaza is another overpass to keep traffic moving to the resorts without vehicles having to pass through the toll plaza. Its basically to ease congestion in the morning and to route resort traffic away from the parking lot/tolls.

I would see it being built by either Lietner-Poma or Doppelmayr-(CTEC still?) Probably just your run of the mill gondola (with a Disney touch) like you would see at a ski resort. Interested to see if this plays out. Personally I think it could be a huge risk depending on the system. Typical gondola's don't run much past 50 MPH and even at that speed it can be a snail crawl. Gondola's are much more acceptable to wind then chairs since the wind can't move through the cabin. Lightning also plays a huge factor but I know lightning protection systems exists so that might not be an issue. But when they run, they can move more people then just about anything else, and you don't have to wait long. The amount of cabins would depend on the line length.

Gondolas typically go around 6-8 meters per second, which would be around 13-18 MPH.

Hong Kong and Sentosa in Singapore have some pretty beefy systems that this could be modeled after with multiple large cabins traveling simultaneously. I assume that's what would be used here.

Well if this gondola rumor is true...I'm definitely booking the Caribbean Resort for 2019 when Star Wars opens. Hopefully the project will be completed by then.

If they do decide to build it, they should be able to do it in just a few months depending on the complexity of the station buildings.

If they went with standard stations, and didn't enclose it in custom buildings it shouldn't really take any longer to install than a B&M style roller coaster. Knowing Disney they will want to do that, but about 6 moths sounds pretty reasonable from start to finish.

When they build these things at ski resorts or up mountains in general, they have to make the footers and then they partially assemble the towers and have to fly them up the mountain with a helicopter to install them. I think with this one they could do it with just a normal crane which would make it go a lot faster.

This would be a great addition to the resort. It would also serve as an attraction/ride as well as transportation. Like the monorail.....

In looking at the Doppelmayr site, the US if far behind other parts of the world as far as aerial tramways go.

This whole conversation seems a bit silly given that the original source retracted what they said, and said that it was a boat type gondola transportation system being considered.

Footers still have to be poured and helicopters would still likely be used for minimum ground impact. These guys know what they are doing when building lifts and why change something that works? It takes around six months to build a lift anyway regardless of terrain. And yes, I meant 50MPH winds. I believe the average lift speed now days is around 1,000FPM. (And many don't run at their full speeds anyway.)

I like the idea of the boat system. Makes traveling to each of the locations feel more like a journey, a little extra magic if you will.

I'm a little late to the discussion, but it 's interesting to note that the one hub at the south end of Caribbean Beach resort is also in the same area where a moderate DVC is going. It would be and added benefit of a DVC member staying there to have easy access to two parks.

I'm super excited for this. We really don't have anything like this in the USA, but there are certainly examples of how this can work in other places around the world. I'd love to see something like the system setup at Kolmarden Park or Sentosa Island. Go Disney for thinking outside the box and doing something amazing.

I sure as hope the skyway gondola rumor is true. Disney and More just posted an update that the original sources got their facts mixed up and it truly is a waterway gondola as speculated by the poster above ^... and not a skyway gondola... perhaps even an upcharge thing.

The Walt Disney World Resort has sent us a press release announcing that today Miss Adventure Falls, the newest attraction at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is now open!

Miss Adventure Falls, a new family-friendly water attraction, will begin offering guests of all ages a high-seas journey on March 12 as part of an expansion at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park.

 

Miss Adventure Falls brings to life the story of Captain Mary Oceaneer, a treasure-hunting heroine who got stranded with her pet parrot at Typhoon Lagoon years ago by a rogue storm.

 

In a first for a water attraction in Florida, guests will be transported in their treasure rafts to the top of the slide, passing by Mary’s wrecked ship where her parrot is talking alongside their treasures. From there, this white-water adventure will take them through twists, turns and dips where they will see deep-sea artifacts Captain Oceaneer collected on her many treasure hunts around the world.

 

With a ride time of two minutes, Miss Adventure Falls will be the longest attraction at Typhoon Lagoon.

 

Miss Adventure Falls is the latest in a variety of expansion projects across Walt Disney World Resort. Coming soon: Pandora – The World of Avatar, opens May 27 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom; a new indoor, multipurpose athletics facility at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in 2018; and a Star Wars-themed land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2019.

 

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon offers water activities suitable for all ages, including signature attractions such as Crush ‘n’ Gusher, a water-coaster that takes riders aboard inflatable rafts on a twisting, turning, up-and-down adventure; Ketchakiddee Creek, a water playground for children ages two to five (under four feet tall) and their parents; and Castaway Creek, where guests hop onto inner tubes for a meandering water tour through a misty rain forest and a hidden grotto.
