Dollywoodlover20
I'm glad I decided to push my trip back to next weekend. I heard someone asked the ops and they told them the ride is operating just fine, that it's closed just because of low crowds. Is that really a logical reason? No. Not saying that they aren't doing it because of low crowds, but yeah, that's a lousy reason.
tykunkel1031
^^ I highly doubt it was that. Last week, it was operating while it, and everything else in the park, was 5 minutes or less. Today things are up to 40, according to the app wait times. So that wouldn't make much sense.
DRobbins1993
We've officially reached wasp season. Wild Eagle has been shutting down daily in the early afternoon and reopening closer to the end of the day. jn the next few weeks we'll see them start to close around 11:30am and be down until at least 5:30 if not closed for the day. From now until the start of November, get your rides on Eagle in FIRST, then head elsewhere. LRod is starting to see them more in the station due to their hot tin roof but their numbers arent great enough yet for shut downs. They're currently down for maintenance. If they shut rides down for low crowd's, half the rides would be shut down at Dollywood this time of year.. They may have shut it down for a scheduled maintenance and chose that day DUE to the low crowd's though.. that's possible I guess but we are in for hard times if Dollywood is now deciding to close rides due to low attendance Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Dollywood isn’t in daily operations anymore, so if they had a scheduled maintenance, they would have done it on a day they're cloaed.
coasterbill
Why do they close rides for wasps? Just put up a sign letting people know and then let them decide if they want to ride or not. Six Flags New England will happily send Batman trains into the world's largest bee orgy on a daily basis and nobody complains.

Im sure their legal team is involved somehow, advising against doing it like that. I'm curious to see if the overhead structure they built at the top of LR that they said was for this purpose, actually works. And if it does work maybe they can do it for the other coasters as well. Is it even possible to sue someone because you happened to be on their property when you got stung by a wasp? If so this is country is even more f**ked than I thought. I think the danger lies with someone who is unaware that they're allergic to bees or wasps, then gets stung, goes into anaphylactic shock, which lowers your blood pressure, etc, during the ride and comes back into the station unresponsive. None of that can happen if the ride is closed. Just my .02 cents.
coasterbill
They should sell epipens in the gift shop. With the recent historic markup combined with the standard theme park markup on basically everything, they should make a killing.

Six Flags New England will happily send Batman trains into the world's largest bee orgy on a daily basis and nobody complains. Aside from the many people at DW that DO complain about them, they are literally up there by the hundreds and sometimes thousands. The species of wasps that shut the rides down also is not local to the area. They are in a migration pattern from the New England area headed towards the gulf and Texas, travelling along the smokies. This is important because guests may not know if they are allergic and if they get stung we may not be able to get them off the ride quickly enough before an allergic reaction occurs. Shutting down before someone gets the chance to get stung is always the better option. Also, should a ride have an error and stop on the lift and need evacution the situation is instantly much more severe.

Hopefully our plans work out and I can get a ride on Lightning Rod and avoid wasps.

middle_keeny
When we went last week I noticed wasps on top of WE. Not a lot but enough. Didn't notice any on Lightning Rod. But then again, when you're going 40mph you dont notice those things.
ImNotOneOfYou
If wasp sting victims were compensated with cinnamon bread people would get mad if they didn't get stung. I'm sure people allergic to wasps would be happy to put their lives in danger for some cinnamon bread.

Like I've said before, if I were Whitney Houston the cinnamon bread would be my Crack. 2.) I'm deathly allergic to wasp.
beenagins87
I've heard about wasps in the past on Wild Eagle and Thunderhead, any reason it seems to be limited to those that the wasps like so much???
Philrad71
I've got a habit of whooping and hollering on coasters, so yeah....inhaling a wasp while riding a coaster would probably not end well. It's bad enough I inhaled one of those stupid mayflies on MF one year at CP - luckily, it was a small one, but still not fun to get off a coaster hacking and about throwing up because a bug is stuck to the back of your throat! This happened to me on Maverick in June. I made sure I had my mouth closed and that f**ker still got in there so I spent the next 15 solid minutes hacking and throwing up like a crazy person. I swear I could feel fragments of its wings in my throat the rest of the night.
Philrad71
^ Ouch...that sounds much worse than what I went through. As you can tell from the photo below, I make sure to keep my mouth shut on coasters...especially nights at CP in June! I know better now!
