Stratosphere Tower: High Roller Dismantling

Recommended Posts

aw come on it's not that bad! There have been much worse, that was at least read-able and understandable! IMO I think we have gotten a little carried away with the "let's play moderator" game.

Is there already some news about the tower and High Roller?

After almost a month with no pics or real news about the removing of High Roller, i'd love to see some new pics right now.

Is the track already completely removed or is there still something to see from the old coaster?

The ride is about 60% Gone

Extremely slow dismantling of a coaster, and no it is not being taken apart nicely.

The ride has been closed since December 30th 2005

it is now already June of 2006

6 months!!! and it is not gone yet.

I will look for some photos for ya!

Hey everyone. This is really old news but Id like to repost the pictures from High Roller's last day of operation, and the beginning of dismantling of the ride. All pictures were taken from public areas in the tower. No rules were broken to take these pictures.

Holy cow thanks for posting all those pictures they were all very cool.

I had never ridden High Roller, but I have been on the shot ride while high roller was operational (it just didn't look worth paying the money).

I can't imagine what it'd be like inspecting that ride 1,000 feet above the ground, or taking it down (see the old photos, those "sandpaper" sheets between the supports for the rail and the spine, that's for mechanics to walk on to inspect the track). It's gotta be one of the most terrifying jobs around, and after looking at the pictures, I really wish I would have gone on the ride before it was cut into 3 foot pieces. I guess the ride really sucked?

Oh well, live you learn.

High Roller wasn't that bad. I liked riding in the back car, the whip around the two drops the ride had gave people butterflies in the stomach, but no airtime. I believe the engineers on High Roller didn't have that bad of a time because the ride was never over the side of the building. The track wrapped around the top of the outdoor observation deck. I know the more terrifying ones to work on would be X-Scream and Insanity where the engineers are over the side of the tower and the ride is all that separates them and an 800ft drop to the ground.

Awww, what a sad day for my rollercoaster history. I know they did this a while back, but this is the first time I've seen pictures!

I am totally hunting for my video and pictures of the construction now.

Me, opening day on the Strat. (Don't laugh, ok, laugh, I was so nerdy!)

This was a great little ride. I rode this in 2004?.... anyway the roller coaster wasn't spectactular, but the view and the fact you're so far from the ground was the awesome part! I think they need to replace with some other type of roller coaster... maybe push again for the Fish Hook one!

The Big Shot is the most terrifying thing I have ever ridden! You think your being shot out into space.... you can't see anything above or below you but the ground and the sky! The temp was over 100 degrees, but I was chilled to the bone!

I'm pretty sure I missed the High Roller credit. The only time I ever was on the top of the tower was summer 1996. I know I rode the Big Shot, but my memory of High Roller is fuzzy. I know I wouldn't have been scared of it, so I guess it was closed that day. Either that or I felt it looked too tame, like a kiddie coaster only 1000 feet up. I didn't know about credits at the time. Oh well, at least I got the rarer Vegas credit--Lightning Bolt--in its original incarnation.

Yes me too! I miss that so much. I'm glad to hear that the Lightning Bolt is going to live again! Did you remember when Lightning Bolt was inside at the end was a "flyby" over the Las Vegas Strip?

Does anybody know if the tower has any future plans for the space previously occupied by the high roller? I think they can definitely find something pretty thrilling. Imagine them putting one of those new S&S coasters with the outside banking up there? That would be sweet!

I also think bungee jumping would be a great idea:P

No they don't have anything planned as far as I know. I remember they were looking into a SkyJump possibly being up there. But everything fell through. I would have loved to bungee form there! But I think liability would have been the enemy there. All that is left of the High Roller is a couple of supports.

No problem, they were already ready to put on. Those were the days. The first real Roller Coaster I worked on. It was really weird though, when the ride was dispatched the ride would cause the tower to "give" and it felt like you were on a cruise ship.

Ahh, the memories, we watched the fireworks off the tower from CC's employee parking lot. Then went over to the party. I wouldn't have been invited if it werent for my generous comping of steak dinners to a Strat employee just a week beforehand.

I also remember the original name "Let It Ride-High Roller", named after the popular, and patented game, which later removed their name off the ride due to it's lameness.

Big Shot was also my 1st S&S, and in my opinion, is STILL the best one. Turbo-Drop at Stateline sucked in comparison.

I too have the original Lightning Bolt cred. I'm on one of the local newsreels (sitting on the backlot river cruise) during their employee preview/Press day. I just remember all the hype that went into MGM, and was so disappointed. I refused to be interviewed, it was SO bad. LOL
