Stopped by to see if there was any progress and...footers! 25 feet deep and ready for some construction. Yay! I'm told that now that summer is over, which is their peak season, they will start constuction next month and once started it could take as little as two weeks to get the major part of the construction done. Crane should be onsite December 1st, so look for some more progress by mid December.

Good to see them doing something. Feels like the site just sat empty with no work for quite some time!

I'm glad to see some construction finally happening on this ride. From an article I read it sounds like their target opening is March 2015, so on one of my spring or summer visits to Knott's next year I'll have to make a stop by Adventure City as well.

An overview of the new coaster

Posted

^Looks like a great family coaster. Nice to finally see vertical construction after a long time. Will this be an exact clone of all the Vekoma junior boomerangs as we saw in the concept art?

Well, someone beat me to the post, but I stopped by this morning to get some pictures. They were excited to see there was interest in their new coaster and proudly told me to come back next week to see more progress. Here's a slightly larger update.

Seriously, they were working very quickly and I would expect to see a nearly completed coaster in a couple of weeks at the most. Well, the track and supports anyway.

Looks like a perfect addition to Adventure City. I really need to head down there one of these times, considering how often I've been to Knott's.

Edit: So is this a custom coaster from Gerstlauer? It looks different than their other family shuttle coasters.

Well, they said come back Friday for another update to see some major progress, and they were correct. Pretty much a completed coaster, and they were getting ready to install the chain. FYI, it rained hard that morning and Knott's had closed, but these guys worked in the rain. I arrived thinking there wouldn't be anybody onsite, but as I started taking pictures I noticed the the crane was humming. It was literally raining the entire morning until, I got out to take pictures...lucky me! Some had rain gear, some were just soaked, but they kept working. Anyway, amazing to see this go up so fast with such a small crew and here's some pictures...

SAM_0535.JPG.a15a3ecb2437935fa43e10a5de42d2c9.JPG

Didn't expect to see anyone here working, it rained all morning and was still sprinkling a little.

SAM_0537.JPG.44ad3e2c6227c307a6681abeb212c275.JPG

I think God wants me to ride this.

SAM_0539.JPG.8ff6b87ccca39b7656edd85d81b3dfad.JPG

The sun peaked through the clouds, Knott's had already closed for the day due to rain.

All I want for Christmas is a roller coaster chain, a roller coaster chain...so I can make it up the lift hill. Very popular holiday song.

SAM_0566.JPG.4b0cf68ce1fff62e7f3d101a19d1f9fc.JPG

Get the hook!

SAM_0570.JPG.16fb63e0685ebe40fb326c23f52c3511.JPG

Plan is to use a strap hooked to the crane to pull the chain up the lift.

SAM_0573.JPG.e9370933db6796cb78d7e9bee542213b.JPG

This strap ended up being too long, but you get the idea.

SAM_0578.JPG.204e30f483b2201f708a4ad686626df9.JPG

They wanted a different link to start so they pryed one off.

SAM_0579.JPG.abfad87e169e73db05eb38d1619121ab.JPG

SAM_0582.JPG.9bff5d6f60dad2d5c704bb9b6969b352.JPG

Hooked to the crane and ready to be hoisted.

SAM_0585.JPG.d16e8347ae21a5b999d17e051ab88f52.JPG

It turned out the crane was as high as it could go, so they used the chain pulley to pull the chain on gear.

SAM_0586.JPG.37264f4452c12a43e235431d066f41eb.JPG

That's hot!

SAM_0592.JPG.61318eea5e14057203ecc9e6895fbcca.JPG

The chained was muscled into place.

SAM_0594.JPG.3925e793742d05eae2503d088404e1ee.JPG

Put a 2x4 in so the gear wouldn't spin while they changed the crane setup.

SAM_0595.JPG.911336bb259aef90e12a5d98c06e5fab.JPG

The crane was used more as a bracing point for the chain pulley to keep it feeding strainght.

SAM_0601.JPG.8adb7e074f4a5d6c79018858d54ba3a9.JPG

Getting the pulley in the right place.

SAM_0603.JPG.c95874eef2588949f0f4f823806719c7.JPG

Hey, no lying down on the job!

SAM_0605.JPG.02bb6472dbf09695415fe0cc94a92a12.JPG

Nerd close up.

SAM_0608.JPG.a934ff4a7ddb66e571e9a5504e579a3c.JPG

So with first length of chain hooked to the pully, they can start the next set.

SAM_0611.JPG.58887fc4ff41b1f251b27e1aa652cc22.JPG

The link they wanted was actually on the bottom so they had to flip it.

SAM_0614.JPG.29e0dabd422f8cc1e6b26728f37c7238.JPG

Easy!

SAM_0616.JPG.6261d1402150d058e878acf322466db7.JPG

Anyone who's ever had to put their bike chain back on can relate to this.

SAM_0620.JPG.47b112dd94af26190dab5b628d72f141.JPG

Popping the link back on takes some pressure.

SAM_0628.JPG.a51eeb99eab2fa8c056a467569b9c6a3.JPG

...and a snap ring completes the job.

SAM_0630.JPG.40dcb7f1af34213d99dad0ee58979c8f.JPG

Okay, they broke for lunch at this point, but basically lather, rinse, repeat.

SAM_0632.JPG.ab8209f59335e6f1870843ff683894fe.JPG

I used a similar set up to put my bike chain on as a kid. Smaller scale of course.

So, there's your update for 12/12. The area where they had all the parts stored is almost empty, so there isn't much left to do. The Gerstlauer people seemed to think the coaster should have no problem with inspections, but well, it's California. Still a station to be built, which was flooded at the time and testing, etc.

Ok, a real update for you, not just some quick snapshots, because that's how TPR rolls! So, make sure you tell people to check out this report and leave a comment!

Great photos--I think this is one of those "under the radar" rides that people are going to like quite a bit.

Posted

Great update, Caesar! Thanks for that.

It looks like it will be a great family coaster.

And Happy Holidays to you, your family and friends!

Posted

Thanks for the positive comments! Really fun report to do, it's not often you get to be that close to a coaster during constuction, but this one is literally almost on the sidewalk.

^Have a good one Bill!

Awesome, great photo's!!!!!!!!

I'll have to take (Maggiekat) down there and get the credits... while annoying the crap out of her by shouting "Kiddie Ride" the whole time!!! should be fun

This looks like it will be a pretty good coaster for Adventure City. Funny thing, I had never heard of Adventure City before joining TPR and I have a feeling most people here in California outside the coaster community haven't either.
