Six Flags Great Adventure (SFGAdv) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Supposedly it was crowded. There was a race, concert, enthusiast event and it was bring a friend free. I think it will be crowded today too. Nice weather, and bring a friend free is still valid. Maybe with the first full day of the NFL season and no events at the park today will keep some people away.

Well while it wasn't PACKED yesterday the threat of rain didn't really keep the crowds away. I guess between the 5K inflatable race, the christian rock concert, and the BAFF special, it was inevitable even though I'd hoped for the opposite. There was also the ACE annual 'Riding of the Bull' event. To be fair, it didn't really rain much at all so good for the park that they were able to make some $$$ even with the threat of a potential washout. As I said I went up w/ my buddy Ant who has never been to Great Adventure. He's done Hershey, Dorney, the Florida parks, and a few in China (including his favorite Ocean Park) etc but for whatever reason not GreatAdv. I was excited to take him on the big dogs, and even though I tend to avoid it, especially wanted to get him on Kingda Ka. I just love first time riders reactions to that insanity. I didn't have a camera with me so Ant took a few photos he told me to share here.

We arrived to the park around 11am to major backups getting into the lot and a moderate wait to get in the gates. No season pass lines open. Lametown. Felt very busy at the entrance plaza and generally while getting in. I was praying for a quick downpour in hopes it would clear it out a bit LOL. Once we did got in we noticed a ton of fright fest decorations up including the skeletons around the fountain and a new giant pumpkin headed monster thing in the center of the fountain, looked great. No red dye to complete the blood fountain just yet but it will look great once they do it. I asked Ant what he wanted to do to which he responded "just take me where you want to go" so of course we headed straight for El Toro and were lucky to walk right on. This was the only ride my buddy was leery of, he told me he gets beat up by wood coasters so as we boarded I explained what Intamin prefabs were and how smooth of a ride it is, etc etc. The Bull was running nicely and we had a great ride, and of course we have a new convert. After he said it was in the top 5 coasters he's ever done.

I figured Bizarro would be dead and we headed there and walked right onto the front row with another couple and the rest of the train was empty. Only one of the fire cannons were working which made me LOL. We also saw one of the ACE ROTB tours in their orange vests on the infield of Bizarro as we rode. Ant said it reminded him of Hair Raiser @ Ocean Park, only not on the side of a mountain.

From here we jumped on the Skyway where I mentioned that Coasterbill would shit himself that they were running both sides (we even took a picture for you but apparently it didnt take or was deleted because we couldn't find it) and were actually cranking through the lines. At first we were going to do Skull Mountain but then we decided to head to Nitro where the line was back at the 60 minute sign but they had all three trains running and we waited about 15. For whatever reason I didn't even think to look at which train we got on but whichever it was it was smooth as butter. Namtab was only running one train and from watching in line for Nitro it seemed they were sending out trains about every 4 minutes. I didn't even bother to look at the line, so we headed to Skull and walked right into the station, waited about 3 cycles for the backrow. Air conditioning was pumping even though it wasn't really hot outside. Great drop, death metal cranked, ridiculous as always. Haters gonna hate, but I love this ride.

It was time for some beer so we walked across the park, stopping at Liberty Pub and had some issues getting what we wanted. Some of the beer was coming out warm and foamy, then another ran out mid pour. Ugh, I normally love this place. We eventually got sorted and downed those quickly before setting off for Zumanjaro. Noticed Ka had a full queue but we waited about 10 minutes in the standby line for Zum. Ant liked this but he didn't seem blown away by it. I knew we were making a mistake trying to ride Ka, but he wanted to do it and I wanted him to do it. So we got in line. Of course they were barely dispatching trains and of course it started to rain after we had waited 40 minutes, only getting though a third a queue when it then seemed to shut down completely. So we said screw it and got out of line.

We were hungry and decided to get some food at the new eatery near Toro, Macho Nacho. Upon heading out of the Golden Kingdom we noticed Safari Discoveries was open and we asked the girl standing at the entrance if the entire path was open and she said Yes! WOOT! So we were able to avoid going all the way around the boardwalk and cut over there in 2 minutes, stopping for a second to check out the seals and baby otters. Awwwww

I had tried Macho Nacho earlier this season and just had some drinks. I'd heard the food was good and the place was jumping so we placed our food order and went into the bar and had a seat. Our bartender was very much on top of his game while we waited a long time for our food. Once it did come out it was hot and fresh - he tried the avocado burger and I had the loaded nachos. We both enjoyed our food and the beers were nice and cold. I recommend checking this place out if you haven't yet. Having Toro roar past you every few minutes is the icing on the cake - the bartop literally shakes each time. Pretty cool.

Since we were in the area we checked out El Toro's line and both switchbacks were full but since we just ate we decided to just wait and digest but good timing because they were absolutely cranking out trains and we got through both switchbacks and into the station in under 20 minutes. Once we were in my suspicions were confirmed - this crew was hauling ass. Always lovely to see. Kudos to the Toro crew yesterday. Absolutely fantastic. As usual the ride was faster and even better than our first ride this morning.

It was just a little after 6pm and we decided to head out as we were both getting tired and wanted to go out on a high note. Bummer I didn't get him on Ka but its a reason to get him back. He also had been interested in Sky Screamer but the line was ridiculous anytime we passed. We never even bothered with S:UF or Green Lantern. I asked him what were his favorites of the day to which he responded "El Toro. That's probably my favorite coaster that I've ever been on".

Toro 2x

Nitro 1x

Skull Mountain 1x

Bizarro 1x

Zumanjaro 1x

Skyway 1x

Again, I didn't have a camera so Ant snapped a few with his phone. Bummed we lost that skyride photo of both sides going. :(

FYI - both sides of Skyway were running on Labor Day, I included a picture a few pages back

Semi-agree about Macho Nacho food, because my fresh hot food got to me very quickly. With a Gold Dining Pass this will probably be my go to place next year.

Its funny, I had almost the same exact day as you! Arrived at 11am to the backups, went straight to Toro and did the same loop. I even went to that new restaurant you were at! I went alone and on my first ride on El Toro, some random guy sat next to me who I found out was at the park alone too. He turned out to be a fellow enthusiast (not with TPR or ACE). So it was great meeting another friendly enthusiast.

Overall a great day in the park with the lines getting long around 2 or 3.

^TTD breaks down a lot, too.

No sign of Jersey letting Six Flags run Ka and Zumanjaro at the same time?

Nope.....

No signs of that happening- I doubt it is still a discussion amongst SF/NJ.

Was Six Flags aware of this problem while planning Zumanjaro or did this not come about until construction had been completed?

I think they didn't find out until afterwards. The ride opened later than expected because they had to reprogram the rides to not be able to run together.

The park is very crowded today. Batman had a reported 90 minute line. Skull Mountain had almost a full queue. Bizarro's line was to the entrance without the 3rd set of switchbacks used.

The full truth is unlikely to ever be known.

Speculation is that Six Flags was very confident they get approval to operate the rides simultaneously (before committing so much money this logically makes sense) and then the state asked for addition assurances and requirements which Six Flags tried to follow (adding the retractable roof) but the state still wouldn't budge.

I finally got to ride Nitro in the rain today. Fortunately it wasn't heavy rain just a light drizzle. It was still a tad painful.

Speaking of lines, I was definitely glad I got the Gold Flash Pass today. I actually had to use it for Skull Mountain which I rarely ever do.

I arrived before opening and ended up leaving around 4:00 because I was tired of the rain.

Was hoping for a cloudier morning to keep the crowds away today but it was indeed quite packed. Ka, 'Jaro, Nitro, BTR, Superman, Skull Mtn all looked to be 60-90min waits whenever I checked (a couple of those were before noon, too).

Toro crew was absolutely devouring the line. From the churro stand where the line was, though the five switchbacks, into the station, and onto a train in TWELVE minutes! Of the ~10 dispatches I saw throughout the day, they only stacked trains once, and for about 10sec. They were running around like some kind of Cedar Fair operators or something.

Stopped at Bowcraft on my way home for the Crossbow credit, as it appears to be listed for sale.

^ Honestly I was in disbelief we got onto Toro as fast as we did yesterday. Almost too fast, I was afraid my nachos weren't full digested lol. Trains going out the second the other was hitting the brakerun. Watching them while in the station I was all

Arrived at 1:30 today. Park was very crowded 60-90 minutes for most coasters. Not even the rain scared anyone today.

King da Ka was down for quite a bit and people were angry. Everyone seemed grumpy today.

For me, it was a great day, just too many people. I will be returning on Sunday for some more fun!

Went today

El Toro's crew was ridiculous. The entrance person said to expect an 80 minute wait with the line filling up the entire queue up to the station but we waited no more than 30 minutes. Incredible, I wish they always ran their coasters like this!

Kingda Ka was only running 2 trains today, but for whatever reason all 4 trains were there. Usually one of them is just not there, but it was sitting on the storage track today. Waited 2.5 hours but I was not about to leave without doing it. Today I had one of the best rides I've ever had on it, it was after a breakdown so the launch was ridiculous, more than usual.

Nitro was running a bit sluggish on 2 of 3 trains for some reason. The line was really short and the crew was dispatching really quickly, not even saying the usual spiel but just dispatching the trains without saying anything. There was some ERT event tonight, and you needed a yellow wristband to attend. I asked the employees how to get one but they had no idea. I asked the people who had them but they just said someone gave it to them. Strange, but I was a little ticked off because I could have gotten like 10+ rides instead of just 2.

So I finally got my phone repaired after not having one for a while, and I had lots of fun taking pictures and video of all the coasters there. It made the wait in line tolerable trying to get unique angles and closeups. I was a little paranoid of it slipping out of my pocket, especially on Nitro after Password121 told his story of losing his phone and the ride ops not being able to get it back.

Overall, it was an OK visit. I was half-expecting it to be dead because of the rain, but it was crowded to my dismay. I wish I got to attend that ERT though...

Awesome Skyway report... the rest of the TR was okay too.

Haha I'm glad to hear about Toro's crew! They've been winning crew of the day at the park the last few days we've been open. I can see why now. And Ka's maintenance crew usually reassembles the 4th train back together for fright fest either to act as a spare train or to swap out another train so they can begin maintenance on that one. As for us running two trains instead of three.. why do more when you can do less?... Nah jk our staffing hasn't allowed us to run three trains lately but hopefully by fright fest, we will be back to running all three pretty consistently.

Wow, it seems like almost all of TPR was at the park yesterday. It was actually my first visit to the park yesterday so I figured I'd share my thoughts.

  • The climb to the top of Zumanjaro was terrifying and seemed to go on forever, but the drop itself was kinda eh.
  • I went into El Toro expecting one of the best rides I've ever been on, and it surpassed that. I was absolutely blown away by it, it's by far the best ride I've ever been on. I've never experienced airtime like that before. Just Wow!
  • I was honestly kinda underwhelmed by Nitro, I think I'd give a slight edge to Apollo at BGW to it. To be fair, my opinion might be a bit biased since I rode it not long after El Toro
  • The Dark Knight pleasantly surprised me for what it was. The top was unbraked and it seemed to just fly over the hills at the end.
  • I was a little disappointed to skip Batman, but it looked like they were only running one train and cycling what seemed like every 10 minutes.
  • El Toro's crew was absolutely flying and pumping out trains like crazy and very rarely stacked everything. On the other hand, the Bizarro crew was awful - it seemed like they double stacked every cycle.

Hey Everyone! I am thinking about going for the day this Sunday. How do you think crowds will be if it is a nice day? It is the first weekend of frightfest which I am worried about.

But I can't pass up the opportunity to ride the woody El Toro in the dark Thanks in advance for your help!
