MJ was certainly the biggest star of my generation. I really did enjoy his music when I was growing up, but you can't forget the last 10-15 years of craziness.

My biggest issue with MJ's death is everybody comparing him to John Lennon. NOT the same thing by ANY stretch of the imagination.

John Lennon was not only the "musical" voice of an entire generation, he was also the social voice. He was brought down way too early and he was certainly somebody who could have been the voice of my generation. Sadly, we have no such voice.

Lennon still had a LOT to give, MJ had nothing left to give. Please stop comparing the two.

News of his death was a surprise but not a shock, due to his history of unusual health problems.

I enjoyed the Jackson 5; probably bought a few 45s (singles) by them. Was impressed by the "Off the Wall" album, his first adult recording. Liked "Thriller" at first, but like many things, lost interest when it became mega-popular.

After Thriller, I know next to nothing about his music, just the scandals and bizarre behavior.

Condolences to his family and fans.

I agree with you 100%. I just love how everyone made jokes about him and now that he is dead everyone is showing remorse.

Don't know if this has already been said, but...

Is RCDB paying their respects to Jackson too? I just visited the site and the "Random Roller Coaster" feature seems to be stuck on "Dragon Wagon" at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. Is it doing that for anyone else or is it just my computer?

Some people will have this conception that he was a bad person, a pedofile, etc. But I honestly blame the media and his upbringing to why he was portrayed the way he was. I will always see him as the performer he was then and now regardless of what media says. I was watching the Earth Song video (one of my favorite songs) and surprisingly got emotional, almost shedding a tear. I guess it really hit me that he is gone. And I'm really sad with what he had to endure the last years of his life. May you rest in peace, good sir. You wasn't an icon, you was THE icon.

I agree with you.

I can only imagine what the tabloids will be saying about Michael Jackson next week. My grandmother actually reads them and believes them too. I do have to admit that I do glance at them just to get a laugh such as Oprah Winfrey "could" be a lesbian because she is seen having lunch with another woman or the latest from Larry Sinclair who claims he did drugs and had sex with President Obama several years ago, never mind the fact that Sinclair had spent time over the years in various mental hospitals and has failed 8 different lie detector tests..of course The Globe and National Enquier fails to mention that part of the Larry Sinclair saga. LOL

Im really sad that MJ is dead! I don't know why but it has really affected me.

I grew up listening to his music, I actually used to think he was a girl!! Lol!! and I was probably one of the minority who did not believe any of the accusations and charges brought against him.

At this moment, I really feel for his kids. Although I don't think he was a "conventional" father in the sense, It still must be extremely tough on them.

It's just wierd that M.J. is dead... I mean, he was a true legend. I also don't believe everything he was accused for. I mean, I may not have been affected as much as others but it's just not the same without him...

I couldn't believe it, he had no real visible health issues. I just got through watching Pitchmen. God, this death has me kinda raging.

I just watched his show too!! Apparently he was on a plane landing in Tampa Airport and the tires blew or something along those lines but they're unsure if that had anything to do with his death. Too many people dying.

DEVELOPING: Television pitchman Billy Mays — who built his fame by appearing on commercials and infomercials promoting household products and gadgets — died Sunday.

Mays, 50, was found unresponsive by his wife inside his Tampa, Fla., home at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry to Mays' residence and foul play is not suspected. Authorities said an autopsy should be complete by Monday afternoon.

"Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days. Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times," Mays wife, Deborah, said in a statement on Sunday.

Mays was well known for his numerous television promotions of such products as Orange Glo and OxiClean. He was also featured on the reality TV show "Pitchmen" on the Discovery Channel, which followed Mays and Anthony Sullivan in their marketing jobs.

Born William Mays in McKees Rocks, Pa., on July 20, 1958, Mays developed his style demonstrating knives, mops and other "as seen on TV" gadgets on Atlantic City's boardwalk. For years he worked as a hired gun on the state fair and home show circuits, attracting crowds with his booming voice and genial manner.

After meeting Orange Glo International founder Max Appel at a home show in Pittsburgh in the mid-1990s, Mays was recruited to demonstrate the environmentally friendly line of cleaning products on the St. Petersburg-based Home Shopping Network.

Commercials and informercials followed, anchored by the high-energy Mays showing how it's done while tossing out kitschy phrases like, "Long live your laundry!"

Recently he's been seen on commercials for a wide variety of products and is featured on the reality TV show "Pitchmen" on the Discovery Channel, which follows Mays and Anthony Sullivan in their marketing jobs. He's also been seen in ESPN ads.

His ubiquitousness and thumbs-up, in-your-face pitches won Mays plenty of fans. People line up at his personal appearances for autographed color glossies, and strangers stop him in airports to chat about the products.

"I enjoy what I do," Mays told The Associated Press in a 2002 interview. "I think it shows."

Mays was on board a US Airways flight that blew out its front tires as it landed at a Tampa airport on Saturday, MyFOXTampa.com reported.

US Airways spokesman Jim Olson said that none of the 138 passengers and five crew members were injured in the incident, but several passengers reported having bumps and bruises, according to the station.

Authorities have not said whether Mays' death was related to the incident.

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman released a statement Sunday extending sympathy to the Mays family.

"Everyone that knows him was aware of his larger-than-life personality, generosity and warmth," Hillman's statement said. "Billy was a pioneer in his field and helped many people fulfill their dreams. He will be greatly missed as a loyal and compassionate friend."

They said Billy was hit on the head pretty hard from things falling. Perhaps he had a concussion? You're not supposed to fall asleep if you have a concussion.

Just goes to show that you should ALWAYS have everything properly stowed away, and your seat back and tray tables in their full and upright locked positions.

^ I have a FaceBook friend who was on that flight updating while it was still on the runway in Tampa. It was a bad jolt according to him, but nothing death causing.

(Entry copied from FB) When they say all landings are controlled crashes, but ours was worse than most. The fire truck cleared us but we need a tow truck. And the pilot just announced they're sending busses so I'm not sure that we're very towable. Exciting vacation so far...

(Entry #2) My grammar went a bit wrong up there, but what do you expect, right? The flight attendant's seat actually broke. We're still on the plane - I guess the powers that be have to look at it before we get off. They seem to be at lunch. At a Moroccan restaurant. In Morocco.....

(Entry #3) Front landing gear no longer exists.... But we're off and ok

This is terrible...

Billy Mays was the LAST person I'd expect to die. I'm praying that his family and friends get through this. Like everybody else has said, you'll be greatly missed as the greatest pitchman ever. Lets just hope Vince from ShamWow can continue his legacy...

US Airways spokesman Jim Olson said that none of the 138 passengers and five crew members were injured in the incident, but several passengers reported having bumps and bruises, according to the station.

This makes me wonder... Were these people checked by some onsite medical team before heading home? I'm pretty sure Tampa's airport has some sort of clinic in case something like this happens.

RIP - Billy Mays

Holy crap!

This is awful. I was also just watching Pitchmen this morning. I can't believe he just died so suddenly.

I was planning on doing a comic series next election where Billy Mays was pitching his way to President of the United States, and during an election commercial he say “Vote for me in the next fifteen minuets and I’ll double your tax breaks!” Looks like I have to scrap that idea.
