Calaway Park Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 In Canada Pepsi's always been made with sugar. Dunno about Coke, though.
monsterfan99 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I tried the MT one and it just left a weird after taste. Oddly enough, there are some places around here that have only stocked Throwback over regular MT. Dew.
Movieguy Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I mostly drink diet soda now, but I tried Pepsi throwback and loved it. Perhaps this is something they can bring back every summer, if the demand is high enough. High Fructose Corn Syrup may be cheaper, but it also has a very negative reputation, which I think has the potential to really hurt sales of non-diet soda, if it hasn't already. If it continues to deteriorate under public scrutiny, the soda companies may have no choice but to find an alternative.
ChrisZer0 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Im a fan of the mexican coke/pepsi, as it has a "cleaner taste" and less "drymouth", which is something HFCS produces. The concept of a corn sweetner isnt a bad idea, its how HFCS is made that causes most of the controversy.
USCoaster Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 The biggest reason the cola companies use High Fructose Corn Syrup has to do with all the tariffs placed on sugar by the US Government which greatly reduce the amount of sugar imported into the country and the price paid for it. From what I understand, the tariffs on imported sugar were designed to help sugar farmers here in the States stay in business and to help corn farmers by inflating the price of sugar so high that HFCS becomes a viable substitute to sugar when being mixed in with other ingredients. I have both the Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback in my apt because I do think it tastes better than the HFCS versions and I'm assuming that if enough people buy it, Pepsi will at least consider bringing it back either seasonally or hopefully permanently.
astroworldfan1 Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Why can't soda companies use Cane sugar that is grown in Louisiana? -Tatum
Movieguy Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I could definitely see this becoming a seasonal item at least. Both throwbacks are selling really well at the store I work at, and I think Pepsi could see the value in keeping this product around in an on/off basis. As I was saying earlier, this would be a great item to bring out every year in the summer.
DiSab Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I'd love to see it become a year-round option, but if they did end up bringing it back every summer that'd be great too.
paintballer Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Why can't soda companies use Cane sugar that is grown in Louisiana? -Tatum Heh.. Louisana
Chris Benvenuto Posted May 20, 2009 Author Posted May 20, 2009 I tried the Mountain Dew version of Throwback tonight, and I was very disappointed by it. I had too high of an expectation for it.
Xpress Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I quite like the Mountain Dew throwback. Sweet, and flavorful.
KnottsDisneyFarm Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Soda is soda. To me there are like 4 types of soda. Here they are. 1. Pepsi 2. Coca-Cola 3. 7 Up (lemon-lime soda) 4. Mountain Dew
KnottsDisneyFarm Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 ^Yes I know. Those are pretty much the only sodas I drink. I either drink those or I make a death drink where I mix all those ^^flavors together.
FitchCoaster Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 I tried Mountain Dew Throwback a couple nights ago. IMO, it's delicious! I love regular Mountain Dew, but sometimes I can't drink a lot of it because it is too sweet. MD Throwback is perfect, it's not as sweet but the taste is mostly the same.
cycamps Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 I was HUGELY disappointed by Pepsi Throwback. I suppose I was expecting a little too much, but I couldn't tell a difference at all. I suppose I figured it would taste a lot different.
sspaz1000 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I haven't been able to find it in any of the grocery stores I go to. Hopefully I'll get to try either of them before they stop producing it. Nicole
Movieguy Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I was HUGELY disappointed by Pepsi Throwback. I suppose I was expecting a little too much, but I couldn't tell a difference at all. I suppose I figured it would taste a lot different. The difference IS very subtle. I suppose you have to have been born in the 80's or earlier, like me, to understand the difference. I'm not sure when Pepsi made the switch to corn syrup, but I'm assuming it happened in the late 80's, when Coke did it.
Chris Benvenuto Posted May 28, 2009 Author Posted May 28, 2009 ^ I was born in 1990, and I could tell what the difference was, the sugar version tasted softer and richer. Mountain Dew Throwback however tasted like the Diet version, but sweeter. Good stuff either way, I like the concept and idea!
CoasterFanatic Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I tried the Pepsi Throwback and that is was really good. Of course, the plastic bottle still sucks.
KPfreak519 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Im drinking some right now. I actually prefer it to regular Pepsi, but I dont think it tastes "Godly" or anything. It doesnt taste that much better (or even just different for that matter)than normal Pepsi, but for some reason I just like the taste of it better.
Movieguy Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 ^ No, it's not Godly, but the change is subtle enough for my pallet for me to really enjoy it. I tried the Pepsi Throwback and that is was really good. Of course, the plastic bottle still sucks. You should do what I do, and pour some into glass. It tastes even better that way, to me.
generaleclectic Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 When I first cracked open a can of Pepsi Throwback, I was immediately transported back to my childhood before the soda companies started screwing around with their formulas in the 80s. It was SOOOOO good. If it does come back for seasonal runs, they should sell it in glass bottles. Plastic bottles and aluminum cans affect the taste.
testtrack321 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Throwback has run dry in Dayton, yet I have a small stash here. Plus I found a place near me here that sells mexican Coke, and it seems, Costco now sells mexican coke!
Homer Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Pepsi Throwback is slowly making a comeback, apparently Pepsi may consider continuing to make Throwback. I'm saddened that Mountain Dew Throwback isn't making a comeback though.
