I mostly drink diet soda now, but I tried Pepsi throwback and loved it. Perhaps this is something they can bring back every summer, if the demand is high enough.

High Fructose Corn Syrup may be cheaper, but it also has a very negative reputation, which I think has the potential to really hurt sales of non-diet soda, if it hasn't already. If it continues to deteriorate under public scrutiny, the soda companies may have no choice but to find an alternative.

The biggest reason the cola companies use High Fructose Corn Syrup has to do with all the tariffs placed on sugar by the US Government which greatly reduce the amount of sugar imported into the country and the price paid for it. From what I understand, the tariffs on imported sugar were designed to help sugar farmers here in the States stay in business and to help corn farmers by inflating the price of sugar so high that HFCS becomes a viable substitute to sugar when being mixed in with other ingredients.

I have both the Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback in my apt because I do think it tastes better than the HFCS versions and I'm assuming that if enough people buy it, Pepsi will at least consider bringing it back either seasonally or hopefully permanently.

I could definitely see this becoming a seasonal item at least. Both throwbacks are selling really well at the store I work at, and I think Pepsi could see the value in keeping this product around in an on/off basis.

As I was saying earlier, this would be a great item to bring out every year in the summer.

I was HUGELY disappointed by Pepsi Throwback. I suppose I was expecting a little too much, but I couldn't tell a difference at all. I suppose I figured it would taste a lot different.

The difference IS very subtle. I suppose you have to have been born in the 80's or earlier, like me, to understand the difference. I'm not sure when Pepsi made the switch to corn syrup, but I'm assuming it happened in the late 80's, when Coke did it.

Im drinking some right now. I actually prefer it to regular Pepsi, but I dont think it tastes "Godly" or anything. It doesnt taste that much better (or even just different for that matter)than normal Pepsi, but for some reason I just like the taste of it better.

^ No, it's not Godly, but the change is subtle enough for my pallet for me to really enjoy it.

I tried the Pepsi Throwback and that is was really good. Of course, the plastic bottle still sucks.

You should do what I do, and pour some into glass. It tastes even better that way, to me.

  • 1 month later...

When I first cracked open a can of Pepsi Throwback, I was immediately transported back to my childhood before the soda companies started screwing around with their formulas in the 80s. It was SOOOOO good.

If it does come back for seasonal runs, they should sell it in glass bottles. Plastic bottles and aluminum cans affect the taste.
