Six Flags New England (SFNE) Discussion Thread

p. 337: Quantum Accelerator family coaster announced for 2025!

Heading to the park this morning. Is it best to start with Goliath or WC?

Also, my home park is SFGAm, so I'm familiar with the better Six Flags food options like Johnny Rockets and JB's, but is there anything unique at SFNE worth trying?

For a snack the Kettle corn is fantastic and made fresh, it's right near Goliath if I remember correctly. Part of the dining pass too if you have one.

Too late now but Goliath because you have a better chance of being able to ask for row 1 and actually getting it with no Flash Pass people yet and no other groups waiting for a specific row. It's a good ride up there, it's horrendous everywhere else.

Thanks, I actually decided for Goliath for that very reason. It was a decent ride up there, but I doubt I'll hit it up again.

I've since gotten two laps on Wicked Cyclone and it's a one train wait and the flash pass/grouper nazi isn't letting anyone choose their seats. It's ridiculous with how little lines there are. I literally had to get to the top of the stairs, then let a group of people go through so I could get a front row lap. Still gotta figure out how to finagle a back row ride.

Just read some Wicked Cyclone reviews from the past, there are some discussions about vibrating and screeching which seems to slow down the ride.

Has this ride really went downhill in terms of ride comfort or pace? We have plans to include the park to our us trip in July, we have been there in 2013.

But if WC is vibrating and sluggish like hell, we might drop our plans and visit another park instead.

Are there particular seats or trains where the issue occurs?

Last year it started vibrating around this time, there isn't that much slow down but the ride definitely goes slower and is much louder. The beginning of this year, it was running like it did at opening last year. (fast, smooth, quiet) Now it is doing the vibrating thing and will likely get worse as the season goes on.

It amazes me why they can't keep this ride running like it was at opening this year. It is such an awesome ride but I would rather not have a foot massage while riding a coaster.

Wicked Cyclone is amazing, people just like to bitch incessantly about everything. The people complaining about Wicked Cyclone vibrating are the same ones that thing Gatekeeper has death vests and Valravn rattles.

We rode is this season and last year during fright fest at the height of the "vibrating" and noticed no difference and thought it was awesome both times.

The only reason I'd be hesitant to visit in July is because of VR on Superman. After seeing the horrific dispatch times in action at La Ronde we've decided to avoid SFNE for the rest of the season as imagining that (adjusting, readjusting, "mine isn't calibrating", "how do you put this thing on?" , "do you see the gun... no, okay get them another headset". "is this thing on right?") combined with the already atrocious dispatch times seems like the worst thing ever. I guess with a Flash Pass it's okay though, plus it's sort of cool to try once so if you want to spend the extra money it might be worth going then.

I just got off three laps and there is a substantial vibration in row 3, but I can't remember what train I was on. Still a great ride, but it does feel like it loses a good bit of speed by the end. Don't let the vibration keep you from riding a really good coaster.

On my visit last year in June one train had 0 vibrations, the other one had VERY significant vibrations. The difference in speed between the trains was definitely apparent, especially after the first outward banked hill. This isn't an issue people are exaggerating at all, though it doesn't ruin the experience totally.

I rode Wicked Cyclone 5 times last August with rides on both trains and never experienced these vibrations everyone keeps mentioning. Definitely agree it loses some steam on the hills after the on-ride camera, but it doesn't bother me. Still a great ride IMO.

You can't miss it when the trains are doing it. It's not like a B&M rattle...it literally feels like a massage chair. It's very strange.

Maybe I'm immune to vibration then because I honestly didn't feel it at all on any ride. I'll see whats what when I get back up to the park later this summer to see if anything's changed.

Vibration or not, I'm still beyond excited to visit SFNE for the first time this summer. If WC is just as awesome as Twisted Colossus, and according to some it is better, then I'm happy.

And even if the new trains are crappy, I'm still excited to ride our long lost GIB from SFMM as well.

The theory of Bush doing 9/11 is more believable than the Wicked Cyclone Vibration myth. People like to complain about everything being rough all the time, which is why Goliath gets way too much hate in my opinion. It's rough and aggressive, and I like that about the coaster. I can see why a lot of people wouldn't like that, but I get so confused when it is criticized for having SLC roughness. It's still one of the smoother Vekomas out there.

My point was that it probably wasn't having issues your visit. On my visit only one of the trains had issues, and at times during the year it was the other train having issues (or both). Probably has to do with the wheels or something. On ypur visit they were probably changed out. Because they are NOT something you wouldn't feel...

Then why does most people at SFNE Online have the same issues? They rode it the first month with rave reviews, and now are saying the vibrations from last year have returned. I've been on nearly 150 coasters and I can tell you on my visit one of the trains was flawless, and the other had massage chair vibrations. It's not a sensitivity or tolerance thing.

Ah, I misunderstood. But you're probably right that some maintenance occured. If it is as intense as you describe you're right, no way I'd have missed it.

I rode Wicked Cyclone in 5 different visits last year, and the first 3 visits were glass smooth. The final two visits had vibrations. It wasn't painful, but if definitely felt weird. I thought they had gotten it straightened out since my rides this year have been outstanding, but that's sad to hear the vibrations have returned.

I think Goliath is similar to a standup in that body dimensions play a major role. I've noticed that taller people tend to hate it and shorter people generally find it more tolerable. There are exceptions to this rule but it seems to be the general consensus. Also, there's rightfully a different mentality about Goliath as it was a very smooth and enjoyable ride that only has these issues because Six Flags proactively decided to put a terrible train on it that led to a hilarious amount of downtime over multiple seasons and now a pretty crappy ride experience.

Personally I also find it irritating that this park will never invest a dime in anything worthwhile like removing the rest of the Skyway towers or adding the missing row of seats back onto Superman but when they have an opportity to greatly diminish the ride experience on a ride that doesn't need fixing with no visible upside they make it rain. Superman was winning the award for best steel coaster on earth year after year so they decided to put new trains on it that nobody likes and then Goliath was a major hit with everyone so they decided to do the same thing. Obviously they had good intentions but both times the results were frustrating.

The vibration issue is definitely there. It doesn't happen every visit, but when it happens, you'll notice it. This tweet from a GP is evident of that.

If you look up some POVs from different times last year, you can even hear it. You can also see how much it slows down towards the end:

Compare that with Robb's videos from media day.

If it was during Fright Fest, no wonder you had a good ride. It started running good again then. It seems to run better in cooler weather.

I guess my relatively good luck with Goliath's new trains came to an end today. Rode in the very back and the return run practically rearranged my goddamn spine. I'm tall and have large shoulders, so it doesn't really throw me around too much, but it still found a way to do a number on me.

For those of you familiar with the BizarreMan hypercoaster, I have a question: how good is the air?

I hit SFNE on a cold day and was not at all impressed, which was extremely disappointing for a coaster that I thought might take my top spot. I don't live close enough for a trip to SFNE to be trivial, but I can plan a ride up there and back in a day without needing anywhere to stay overnight, so it's somewhere that I'd consider visiting again later this year if Superman feels like an Intamin.
