jmccalip Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Why don't parks want to build them anymore? They are my favorite thing. I'm not talking about the S&S types, but more the second and third generation Intamin versions. Just something that was on my mind since Texas no longer has one.
CoasterFanatic Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I think the biggest thing is the parks that could afford them or wanted them already have them. There are only a few of the big boys left that don't have some form of drop tower.
timetrial3141592 Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 True. However, I would like to see Hersheypark get one...
BDG Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I think the biggest thing is the parks that could afford them or wanted them already have them. Don't forget the building permits. Even if a park could afford one and want one, there's the possibility they're not allowed to.
FeelTheFORCE Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 SFMM needs one, and building permits shouldn't be a problem for them because they already have a 400ft structure.
imbordisux Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Well, if you're talking about the Intamin versions... there was that whole thing about the girl getting her feet sliced off... Just sayin'.
jmccalip Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 Well, if you're talking about the Intamin versions... there was that whole thing about the girl getting her feet sliced off... Just sayin'. That was pretty recently though...
coaster05 Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Couldn't you just go to a park that has one. They are not exactly rare. BTW Waldameer added one this year, Canobie a couple years ago, Heck Beech Bend and Martin's have small ones. I don't see the need for more.
Carnage Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 BTW Waldameer added one this year, That one was awesome too. It might have been small, but it got me pretty good. I love how there's zero warning as to when you're about to drop. I think I actually liked that small one more then the giant Intamin one's.
RIP Psyclone Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Yes, the "drop" towers have the appeal of not knowing the exact time the descent will occur, but "shot" towers have the advantage of floater air time at the top.

I wasn't talking about the S&S/Intamin towers. On those you still have an idea of when you're going to drop. You stop at the top for a few seconds before dropping. So you pretty much know when it's going to happen. The one at Waldameer is a smaller one. (I'm not sure of the manufacturer). It drops you as you're getting pulled up. So you really don't know when the drop is going to be. This is the one I'm talking about.
dr.gumbo Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 ^ Its built my ARM Rides, most new tower rides are built by them now! EDIT: Here's a link BTW www.armrides.com/Rides/Super_Shot/ Most of there other rides aren't anything exiting.
viking86 Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I LOVED the FAbbri drop tower at PowerPark. It holds you at the top for 40 seconds (!!!) before it shoots you down. But it doesnt have the controlled feeling that S&S towers has.
CoasterEricHP Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I have also been waiting for Hersheypark to get a drop tower for YEARS! They are a great affordable non coaster year addition... but.. oh well.
Homer Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Drop towers are still getting some love. BGT is getting a family-sized (4-story tall) tower for their new Jungala area. I'm just saying, but I'm sure parks in the future will get drop towers (not sure about the Intamin towers though).
kraxleRIDAH Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I have also been waiting for Hersheypark to get a drop tower for YEARS! They are a great affordable non coaster year addition... but.. oh well. That's a common misconception -- that drop towers are cheap to build. A decent sized tower from Intamin or S&S in the ballpark height of 250-feet will run upwards from $7 million. That's more than most large wooden roller coasters cost.

Add low capacity to that, and its not really a surprise that not that many are being built these days.
PURE Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Funny how Batman clones are all around the country and everyone wants to complain that SF has no variety. Then the same people come along and ask "Why don't more parks have these drop towers?" which are essentially everywhere and all pretty much create the same thrill.
christianscoasters Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Wild West World was going to get a drop tower. Probably not Intamin, cause that would be way too much money for them. It probably would have been some craptacular ride anyway .
PKI Jizzman Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Didn't Terra Maritica just get a new drop ride along with the new Intamin Ball Coaster?
coaster05 Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 ^Terra Mitica got an observation tower ride.
DCody Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 SFMM may not have a giant drop tower, but they DO have a first-gen Intamin freefall, which is awesome! Okay, maybe not an awesome ride, but awesome that it's still there. Totally '80s!
Xxhershey818xX Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 ^ I have to agree everytime I go to Ceadr Point. I always get my ride on Demon Drop its so old that you get this feeling in the back of your mind that it might break . Then you drop its all pure free fall. ITS GREAT!!! I wish the would revamp that design and make it newer and try and sell it again going for pure thrill!
coasterdude5 Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 If Fabri would make their drop towers look more "themepark-like" then I bet some more parks would be buying them up... They're awesome rides.
matteocrepaldi Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 - It's a very small park but Fantasy World Minitalia got a 164 feet tall free fall this year. - Movieland got a 1st generation Intamin free fall last year. - Disnayland in Paris is going to add a Tower of Terror clone for next year.
