Video Games

Recommended Posts

I figured as this is the video game thread, I'd bring this up. First off, I need to vent on how let down I am. Today, I got to try the 3DS in person. All I can say is, this is probably the biggest letdown in the video game world in 2011 so far. Why? The whole 3D aspect of it is useless and I see nothing 3d about it. It pretty much looks like when you do those 3D simulator rides and in mid ride you pull off your glasses. To put the icing on the cake, you have to hold the thing about a foot from your face. I'm one of those gamers who holds the system more like on my lap. This thing's going to cause more of a headache trying to get the 3D to happen, so much of a distraction from actually just playing the game. So with this said, Nintendo, please release a version minus the 3d and lower the price tag on it as I still like the idea of the new Mario game and Ocarina of Time on the handheld.

Stuck with my PS3 right now as I'm on the road...I really need a new game for this thing, all I have right now is Modnation and Split/Second (which frustrate me to no end), Uncharted 2 and LBP (which I've already beat) and Shaun White Snowboarding (also frustrating, although not as much).

Gonna see if I can pick up GRID tomorrow. Anyone here ever played it?

I know there are a lot of Nintendo fans on this forum, so I know you guys will appreciate this.

Review of never-before-seen Super Mario Bros. film!

EDIT: Since I don't feel like double-posting, I'll just add more onto this post.

I'm considering buying The Potato Sack on Steam, which is a collection of 13 highly rated indie games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Killing Floor, Super Meat Boy, and more. It's just under $40, which is more than I've ever spent at once on Steam, but it's just a deal that I can't refuse.

Well, after my bad first impression on the 3Ds, I decided to give it a second chance. My friend came by with his yesterday and after trying it out, my thoughts slowly shifted from "this looks flat/double vision" to "Wow, I see some stuff coming out" and "Hey, that's cool!" Unfortunately, the store model does not showcase much of the system's capabilities (Tried Pilot Wings Resort, didn't feel all that 3D-ish to me). Had they demo'd the AR cards, and the whole augmented reality aspect, then I think it would have a stronger impact on first impressions. With all of this said, I bought a 3Ds today along with Super Monkey Ball 3D. I can say that SMB3D puts the 3D to good use...sense of depth, height, etc. If you don't feel like doing 3D, you can turn it off and do the gyro sensors...much like a portable Wii. You can even make Mii's on this from scratch or take a photo and have the 3DS generate one based on the taken photo. Looking forward to Ocarina of Time now!

In the mean time, SMB3D, Face Raiders (This game's cool...augmented reality with faces attacking you), and the whole AR Card thing.

I think Exodus in Halo: Reach might just qualify for being one of the greatest levels in a video game I've ever played. It was beautiful, challenging, expertly paced... and simply fun.

Hell, that goes for the entirety of Halo: Reach, at least from what I've played so far. I'm absolutely loving it.

^Amazon had a deal where you get $35 in coupons on 3DS games, and a free accessory (mine was about $10), so it made it more reasonable. It really is a fun system, and I really like the 3D effect. I can't wait to try our Robb's new Sponge Bob game for it!

That is a good deal if you can use the accessory, still not great since I graduated and don't have a job yet!

Has anybody played the Assault gametype in Crysis 2? I just unlocked it today and it's super fun! It's a take from CoD's Search and Destroy. The object is to upload/download files or viruses onto the defenders' computers through various terminal access points. The "attackers" have Nanosuits (which enable cloaking) but only carry pistols. The defenders have laser-sight assault rifles, but they are only wimpy "normal" soldiers. There are no custom classes, and everyone has one life.

Hiding from the laser sights that dart the room, combined with Crysis' insanely realistic graphics/lighting, and cranked up HUD bobbing makes you feel like you're truly immersed, if not inside a movie. It's so fun to sneak around the buildings, hallways, and air ducts to reach access points and assassinate the defenders under a time limit. The people at Crytek did a great job on making this gametype authentic and not some "let's just throw it in there" one. Really having a blast playing it [all day].
