The 2006 Press Kit for Busch Gardens Williamsburg now refers to the park as "Busch Gardens Europe". In addition, at the rear of the kit, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is referred to as "Busch Gardens Africa".

So what does this mean to us? Probably not much more than a name change...

I do not see why they do not go back to the Original names.

BGW- The Old Country

BGT- The Dark Continent

IMO I think the new name change is more confusing to the public...cause now they think the Busch Gardens they are looking up is IN Europe or Africa!

(note the photoshoped pic of Apollo! looks like a dive machine!)

Yes, when I saw the thread title I at first thought they were going to open a park here in Europe.

^^Political correctness precludes using those old names anymore, folks (probably a good thing, actually).

I thought this was strange, but then I remembered the rumor going around that with the new ride next year, the New France area was going to get a makeover as Switzerland. That kind of makes more sense if they are really stressing the Europe angle. And Switzerland is a natural transition between France and Germany.

I see nothing wrong with the current names. BGT is in Tampa; BGW is in Williamsburg.

These new names will just cause confusion, in my opinion.

Busch Gardens Tamprica.

They could sell collectible tapioca pudding cups as a tie in.

I wonder what the ghetto across the street from BGT(A) will think of this? Personally I dont like Africa tagged on to it, but maybe it'll grow on me, it just doesnt have the same ring as "Tampa" did. Oh well!

I don't know about everyone else, but when I read "The Dark Country", I laughed so hard I almost gave myself the trots. It's beautifully inappropriate.

As for changing it to Africa.. That's.. Well that's just really lame.

Hmmm.

Does that make my Dark Continent fridge magnet a weeeeeee bit more.... valuable?

(Yeah shure, yu betcha.)

Where did you read "The Dark Country"?

it was the Dark Continent...you have to wonder what their reasons in naming the park that in the first place was...is it in reference to Africans?

Oh! I read Old Country and Dark Continent and.. You know. Hah. Shut up. My brain wanted to read "dark country" because it sounded funnier. ahaha . My bad.

Perhaps it was referring to the "deep, dark, Africa" thing. Of course, I MUCH prefer to think it was in reference to the people who reside there, because, hell, that's hilarious.

hahah dark country. It's still funny.

It is always wierd when well known thing change their name. In the UK Opal Fruits sweets changed to Starburst years ago and i still sometimes get confused.

But its just progress so Onwards we go

There is always space for a bit of nostalgia though

It is unclear if the origin of the term Dark Continent (which has been used for centuries) is in reference to the mystery of unknown nature of Africa to outsiders and/or a reference by westerners to skin color of native Africans.

In all likelihood both factors contributed to the term Dark Continent long before Augustus Busch ever started brewing beer.

Personally, I think the new name should be:

Busch Gardens: Edge of Africa

and they should go back the The Old Country (or Back to Old Europe)

The old names would confuse people even more...Hell the reason Six Flags changed "Over Mid-America" to "St. Louis" was because they did a survey and found out people outside the advertising radius had no idea the park was located right outside of St. Louis.
