robbalvey
5.Magic Springs- Age doesnt effect artistic talents IMO. At my animation club, our effie (7th grader/newb/what have you) is one of our best computer artists right now, and probably one of our most productive members. I wish I coulve given you a better spot, but your skill still needs some improvement compared to the others I saw today... I'd have to disagree with you. Age DOES have a lot to do with it. You only get better over "time" aka "age" I can tell you that my videos from 10 years ago look like crap compared to the stuff I see myself doing now. And the reason why I mention Connor's age in the listing is that for someone as young as he is (and I have no idea how long he's been editing videos) I think his stuff is pretty good! Probably not as good as someone who's been doing it for years, but man, I only wish I had the means to edit video when I was 13 years old! Give the kid some encouragement and the ability to improve would be endless. --Robb
Reon
Thats what not what I mean. Talent just blooms at different times for different people. Of course theres always room for improvement, but still. You have to develop your style asap or else you'll forget what your doing...
AMartin777
Wow! The videos are starting out with a bang this year. Really great! It's really great to see so many people getting into the creative side of these videos. It really inspires you to work harder with your own footage. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the next batch... Oh yea, WHOOTAH!!!!

I've been editing videos for about two to three years using Windows Movie Maker and a family, entry-level camcorder. I just recently bought my own camera and more advanced editing program. I really don't mind criticism at all, I like honest opinions so I truely know what areas to improve upon.
Corkscrewed
A question to Paul and/or Julien... if you could estimate how many days/hours it took for you to edit those videos, what would it be? Basically, that was a really complicated way of asking how long did it take to make your vids.

Blue0ctane
I only watched Luxo's after reading his thread, and it was pretty good for a 13 year old. The camera was a bit wild on the coasters, and aimed from a flyer perspective on the SLC, but still pretty decent. *thumbs up*
Corkscrewed
^^ Wow... impressive. I *might* have spent somewhere close to that much on one of the vids I submitted, but definitely nowhere close to that on any of the other vids I've ever done before. It definitely paid off though! Tömmioh
My favourite video out of those 5 was Julian's Johnson's Don't Look Down 2005, nice music, good editing to the music, many coasters, happy faces etc. The other videos were also really good, I can't wait to see more. BarryH
I saw all 5 videos this morning. The Magic Springs video stood out in my mind because the song was stuck in my head all morning! The SLC was truly rough! Still, all the videos were really very well done. I was surprised with the Slagharen video. The park seemed so deserted! Who scared off the guests? I hope my video is posted soon. We must all see "The McDonald's-eating, Intamin coaster-riding donkeys, midgets, and hamsters fun coaster antics!" Ghost
I'm a little late on watching them, but finally got to it... Please could you also add some crappy videos... robbalvey
The next 5 videos have been posted! http://www.themeparkreview.com/contest2006/contest2006.htm In this group we've got videos from Efteling, Port Aventura, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and a couple that take us on a whirlwind trip of parks all over the world! (Well, one of them is all over hicksville midwest USA, but that's cool too, right?) Enjoy this weeks installment. It's going to be hard to pick a winner! Unless it's in my nose. --Robb
Corkscrewed
Uh oh! Only 15 more chances for one of my vids to make the cut! Hope one does! And now, onto the reviews: Tom Mueller's Port Aventura Video The first thing I have to say is: WOW! What beautiful video quality! The color and crispness of the video was extremely impressive, and I love the various professional-looking views and angles you took. The smooth panning, excellent steady zooming, and fortunate lighting you had made this video extremely enjoyable! Add to that the nice use of the widescreen format and you have a wonderful video that looks extremely cinematic! Port Aventura is a wonderful park that I definitely want to visit someday, and you've captured it brilliantly! The editing is top notch and the fun is certainly obvious, altho the whole "STAMPEDA" screaming was pretty over the top. Definitely one of the top videos so far, though, IMO. Out of curiosity, was that clip at the end sort of a swerve to trick us into thinking the guy was gonna utter the now-infamous "High speed coaster from Vekoma" line? If so, mission accomplished. Jim Williams' Six Flags Magic Mountain December 2005 Pretty neat vid. Compared to a lot of the others, the editing was not as crisp here, but that doesn't detract from the general fun that's projected. Interesting shennanigans are this video's strength, from wolf nut biting to rapids hitting to carousel spanking. I'd say that the poorer lighting conditions and the technical flaws dragged this one down for me, but it's by no means a bad video! And it's always great to see people including background noise in their vids and doing it relatively well! Lars & Cornelia Theissen's "Coaster Season 2005" I'm not sure this was supposed to happen, but the audio completely cuts out on the last 30 seconds. Which was a bummer. This video falls into the middle of the pack for me. Now, that might sound disappointing, but we've already had such a great showing so far that "middle of the pack" here really means "pretty effing awesome everywhere else! My only major complaint here was the flashing of the park names and quick video shots of each park at the beginning. I thought the way that was done was contradictory to the tone of the music and detracted from the vid a little bit. I would have gone with a more simpler slow fade to introduce each park. However, the rest of the video is a great journey to various parks all around the world! The editing is pretty good, though not perfectly consistent (that's only an "issue" here because we've got about three or four that are just absolutely stunning in this regard already), and the shots are all great. The soundtrack is very uplifting, which I greatly enjoyed, and overally, this is a very sold, very enjoyable video! I hope the audio gets fixed though. I'm guessing that was an encoding issue. Jonathan Hawkins' "Midwest Conquest" ROFLMAO at the bumper car line clip! That had me laughing for a while! Alternate intro statement: WHOA that's a lot of parks! And what a dizzying finale! This one was another strong "general theme park(s) tour vid with some shennanigans." It wasn't utterly amazing, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. A whole lot of parks, a whole lot of people, and a whole lot of coasters. I mean, seriously. That was a lot of content covered in there! I commend you for that. And those bumper car clips were definitely hilarious. Nicolas Chavance's Efteling This definitely had one of the best opening shots of any of the entries so far. Gorgeous, gorgeous sunrise! In fact, I really like the cinematic quality of the opening minute. It was as though I was watching an actual short movie, rather than "just" a theme park video. I would definitely recommend fading into the next shot rather than using a raw cut, especially since the scenery is so lush, tranquil, and pristine. The thing that sticks out for me here is the great, uplifting, whimsical, "have a fun time" feel this video exudes. The mixture of the beautiful setting of the park and the charm that Efteling has is captured wonderfully with the soundtrack and the clips. It's a carefree atmosphere where you can frollick around and just have fun! And I love that. And the line of ducks (and consequently, people) was totally cool. Ducks rule! MY CURRENT RANKINGS: 1. Paul Ruiz De Miquel - "Parque de Attactiones" 2. Julian Johnson - "Don't Look Down 2005" 3. Tom Mueller - "Port Aventura Video" 4. Justin Saxe - "Silverwood" 5. Nicolas Chavance - "Efteling" 6. Lars & Cornelia Theissen - "Coaster Season 2005" 7. Jonathan Hawkins - "Midwest Conquest" 8. Dennis 'Park Junkie' Kolodzeizik - "Slagharen" 9. Jim Williams - "Six Flags Magic Mountain December 2005" 10. Connor Thompson - "Magic Springs" Please, no one take this as a jab, because it isn't meant to be negative, but IMO, right now, there's a pretty clear gap between the first three and the rest of the videos in terms of overall production and quality. The next three are all pretty even, and then there's another small but noticeable gap between six and seven, and finally, another separation between eight and nine. But that isn't to say that none of them are bad, because it's quite the opposite!

The Ayatollah
Albert, Nicolas' first shot reminded me of an establishing shot from an epic film, I definitely agree that it was nicely done. I just can't stop watching Paul's Parque de Attractiones video! Everything about the film is perfect! The footage, raw audio, music (very catchy tune), and there is a good balance of coaster/non-coaster activities. It is my undisputed choice for first place. However, I am impressed by all the videos (especially Tom and Julian's entries) and am highly considering entering for next year!

eddie200330
I had to watch Johnathan Hawkins' Midwest Conquest twice in a row and I am still laughing my ass off at the chain reaction bumper car "shots". That was hillarious!!!Very well done video and imo the best so far.
HAYASHI
I am VERY impressed with one particular video that knows how to captivate an audience. There's a reason why NICOLAS CHAVANCE's vid was last (no pun intended)... and im glad the build up to his video lived up to the expectations. This so far, is one of my personal favorites of the 10 vids shown. This video was extremely well done. It's organization and storyline was great. It felt like watching a movie trailer to the full length film. Perfect choice of music for this as well. You really caught the mood you were going for, and i felt it. Part of the reason why it stood out, was the fact that it was really different from watching rollercoasters left and right. You took the essence of the park and really utilized it in this film. It made me wanting more. In addition, the opening is a classic. I'm assuming you've had experience in film and/or editing. I hope the park see's the film and recognizes it in appreciation. great job! SO FAR, by groups.. my favorites are GROUP 1: Julian GROUP 2: Nicolas
