Six Flags St. Louis (SFStL) Discussion Thread

I heard Colossus is down for a program adjustment for the new continuous loading system. It should be back in a few weeks.

Shocked the ride has any sort of programming at all.

I was thinking a rope was holding it in gear or something

I went out the the park yesterday to get a ride on Batman backwards, since I won't be able to next weekend and didn't want to miss it.

I went to Batman first and got a ride in the middle of the train. Going backwards was kind of disorienting and intense, especially as you're whipped through the corkscrew type inversions. I'm extremely familiar with the layout, so I knew what was coming. I could see it being quite the experience for a first time rider. Going backwards was definitely cool and different, and I'm glad I made the effort to get to it before they turned the cars back around, but I don't think I'd like it to be that way all the time.

Next I went to try out the Boss with the new turn. I rode in the back the first time. Great first drop as always, and very fast and intense as usual. The midcourse brakes grabbed some, but didn't entirely stop the train and didn't have too much effect on the second half of the ride. I'm glad it retains almost all of the intensity throughout the second half of the ride. The new turn is definitely more comfortable than the helix was, but I do enjoy a good strong helix and would have preferred if they kept it and retracked or reworked it. Either way the ride experience isn't too diminished and I understand the idea behind making the change. Still my favorite ride in the park.

I hit Screamin' Eagle next, and it seems to be running well. You could hear the chain dogs jangling as you went over any of the airtime hills and when we stopped on the brakes the upstop wheels were just spinning and spinning. Still great after all these years and was running fast and loose.

I gave The Boss another run on my way to American Thunder, which didn't disappoint. Lastly, I went to get another ride on Batman backwards, hopefully near the front? back? Normally the back. It was closed for whatever reason and I wasn't hanging around to see if it reopened.

All said, it was a good pop in visit and I just thought I'd give a short write up of my thoughts. The park looked nice and seemed busier than the station waits on the coasters would have led one to believe. It does seem as though Six Flags is pushing the Membership thing hard. Almost all of the ticket booths were closed in by barriers that said something like "Membership Center". Maybe because I was arriving later in the day they were just using the barriers to force customers towards customer service, which seemed to be the only place to get tickets by the time I got there. Regardless, the membership thing was plastered everywhere around the entry, including having the "membership only" ticket scan area to enter the park. This isn't surprising, as everything that can possibly be moved to a subscription based model is in today's economy. I'll stick with the one time pay season pass for as long as I can.

Nice write-up. I agree in that namtab was very cool to try and I'm glad I did because of the intensity, but it's definitely best as a limited time thing.

I have yet to ride Boss this season and probably won't until early June as I have a Busch Gardens Tampa trip coming up in a couple weeks, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it's changed.

Will be at this park for the first time on May 27th. Me and my wife will have dining pass so where is a must eat? Any non coaster must rides? Will flash pass be needed to hit all the coasters in one day on Sunday May 27th?

Thank you all so much for the advice and tips

where is a must eat?

Nowhere. The park has no notable food. JB's is decent, and there's GoFresh if you want something not fried. All of it is forgettable, though, so just get whatever's close.

Any non coaster must rides?

Justice League is fantastic, get to it early or use single rider line.

Probably not, but you never know with Memorial Day weekend. If everyone's in the waterpark, then you're probably fine without. If lines look crazy, pick one up.

Ride Superman, the drop tower. It's elevated on a hill, so not only are the views neat, but it makes the tower look much higher than it is. The train is decent and our log flume doesn't get you too uncomfortable wet and has a nice path through the woods. If that's not enough and you are the type of person to enjoy being soaked, a good portion of Thunder River feels kind of secluded, which is cool.

Other than that, the park is Americanfreezeeaglebat Flags. Unless you like being beaten up, then throw Boss in front of the name.

You should do Spinsanity as well if you've never done a disko. It's a good flat.

edit for drop tower talk since it was brought up. I've never been on one because they scare the crap out of me. Our Superman Tower definitely looks taller thanks to the topography. That said, when traveling to Busch Gardens Tampa in two weeks I'm already trying to mentally prepare to just suck it up and do Falcon's Fury because who knows when the heck I'll ever be down there again. If my stomach drops while looking at our Superman, I don't know how the hell I'll get on that thing but I plan to give it the ol' college try.

Falcon's Fury actually felt less intense than a traditional drop ride, just because you don't get as much of a stomach drop feeling when you're parallel to the ground. I like drop towers, because they're one of the only rides that make me nervous. I don't always care for the sudden intense drop. Falcon's Fury is a little easier to take for some reason. Trust me, it's a fantastic ride but it's not nearly as intimidating as it looks... and sounds.

For the poster asking questions about visiting SFSTL, I also forgot to say try Sky Screamer. Those are really fun rides.

The Boss MCBR is definitely grabbing to a full stop on some circuits.

To the poster earlier and Bert, if you dont mind spinning ride Excalibur is worth at least one ride. Its an incredibly rare flat and a unique expurience, plus doesn’t suffer much downtime.

It's suffering downtime right now. It's closed, with no announced date to reopen.

On a related topic, anyone know when Colossus is going to reopen?

To chime in here regarding Superman, if it’s your first time at the park, I highly suggest politely asking the ride operator if you can ride in car six. You might have to wait an extra cycle, but the view is worth it. I love how even though SkyScreamer is significantly taller than Superman, once you reach the top in car six, you’re even higher than the top of SkyScreamer.

I sometimes enjoy to remind people that they’re approximately 300ft above I-44 which has a speed limit of 65mph which, coincidentally, is the speed at which you’ll be dropping. Also, a good tip is that while the line for it during the day can get really long, it’s pretty much always a 0-10min wait the first and last hours of operation with a fair amount of people getting a cycle all to themselves.

I’m excited for Fright Fest, as I love coming up with unique spiels for the top of the tower, my favorite being:

“In my favorite horror movie, The Shining, we learn that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Well here at Six Flags, you’re about to learn that all lift and no drop makes Superman a dull ride.” But if the computer is going to drop all of the cars at the same time, I prefer to just sing ‘Ring Around the Rosie’ in the creepiest, most drawn out way possible making sure to time it so that the cars drop right as I get to the lyric, “we all fall down.”

^ FYI - Superman was down all day Sunday - not sure why.

Several rides were down actually, but we still had a good time.

Mr. Freeze, American Thunder and Namtab were the highlights for me.

And if you're lucky Josh will spout off a witty line in contradiction to your opinion!

I really do love our Superman. When I visit other parks, I always fell a little dissappointed by other drop towers. There’s something about Superman that gives it that extra exciting thrill (probably the elevation).

The only problem I have with Superman is that every time I’ve ridden it in the last couple years, I’ve always gotten shafted with a seat facing away from the park and towards that back hill.
