What a clever way to say "OH GOD ALL THE KIDS WENT BACK TO SCHOOL OH LORD HELP!!!"

That's pretty much the answer I got from HR in my response.

Good Afternoon,

We regret that on the day you visited our park that some rides, attractions, and food stands were closed due to understaffing. A large majority of our Hosts and Hostesses are teenagers who are still attending high school or college. At the time of your visit, most of the schools were in session during our normal operating hours, specifically in the morning, where most of your inconvenience was probably found.

When this happens, we try to have the most popular attractions open for you, the Guest, to enjoy. This sometimes leads to long lines and waits for the rides, and we apologize for this inconvenience.

Our Human Resource Department is hard at work finding employees for our park. We are currently recruiting at area high schools and malls. They are also participating in college job fairs across the state. We are very confident that they will find the staff that we need in order to have a great rest of the season.

On Labor Day though? Damn, sorry to most of the workers were kept in school even on Labor Day. I was pretty sure everyone is off on Labor Day. Bummer I got the copy and paste response. Good to know they are putting forth an extra effort to get more workers in. I'm sure they will be ready for October and on. I'll be keeping an eye on the thread.

None of the schools were in session for labor day. It's a federal holiday and I can guarantee that none of those workers calling in were due to school. That is a terrible response. When I used to work out there I had employees every year try the "I can't work on labor day because of school" excuse. If that is what guest relations sent you I am going to be highly pissed off.

I'd be a liar if I were to say that I wasn't slightly interested.

I would definitely sign up and give this a try if I didn't have three kids and had more time.

Mike

I don't need the cash... well not that I couldn't put it to use... but I've always wanted to work in a park. To be completely honest, if I had it to do it all over again I would have definitely gone down that road instead of the career path I took. I've even talked to my wife about going back to school and getting another degree catered to hospitality management or something thereof. I've seriously considered it and I think it is something I could even be good at, but we're too comfortable with our salaries and I know I would have to take a tremendous pay cut out of the gate, with no promise of permanent success. No matter how much people say "Go for your dreams" it's hard to trade good pay and a solid retirement in for no guarantee of success. I'm not old by any means, but that's a poor choice at 30 years old if you want to play the odds. Especially since the global economy scares the piss out of me right now.

I'd really love to do this on demand employment, but I have two issues:

1) I've taken a promotion where I'm permanently on call, so that means I would have to be able to leave whenever my phone rings. Its only happened a couple times within the past couple months, but it does happen and it once required me to work 110 hours throughout the next seven days, starting unannounced at 230 am on a Saturday. fml

2) HWfan would figure out who I am in a heartbeat and he wouldn't hire me... lol. Although maybe if I plead ignorance about my TPR activity he wouldn't be able to confirm it, since I'm actually pleasant in person. I don't mean to be a dick, maybe I'm just bad at putting things into text?

I am somewhat curious if they have any security positions available for people with experience, though. Again, not that it could happen for me, but just curious.

It's a Trap!

I did this when I was in college with my fraternity and it was horrible.

Most of my brothers ended up in Calico and the turkey leg stand. I got put in the Fudgery there in the main store because I could run register (they're set up a lot like the ones I used working at Walmart).

The worst part about working there is seeing the behind the scenes of food services at SF. Let's just say I haven't ate at the park since.

Oh and don't get the candy apples. Trust me.

I hope you mean SFSL "GR" rather than HR. I can't speak for Guest Relations, but I know a lot of people call Human Resources when they want to get through to someone immediately and keep questioning members of that department even though they can't usually answer the question for sure.

While I don't want to make it sound like I'm trying to brush off your experience by making excuses, I will say that part of the answer you posted (a big part actually) has to to do with college students who are physically out of the city/area. Second, while I can't comment on that day's specific staffing details, just because you don't have school doesn't mean you can't call off work or not show up and claim school related or homework related issues. We actually had one girl miss all of her homecoming events because she didn't want to call off work. Needless to say, her department found a way to show their appreciation.

And when they say (in PKI's quote) that the HR staff is hard at work, they're not kidding. Even though I am scheduled for two days off per week, I'm working seven days this week and supervisors from other departments are helping in HR during the week. One hard part is that we only have really between 3:00 and 5/6:00 to call people. That's why on my scheduled days off that I go in on, I just go in in the afternoon.

EDIT: Let the record reflect that I am in no way asked/pressured to go in on my days off but do it partially because I love my job and sitting at home is boring when I could be helping to hire people for the park.

I'd really love to do this on demand employment, but I have two issues:

1) I've taken a promotion where I'm permanently on call, so that means I would have to be able to leave whenever my phone ringy dingy ding-a-ling dings.

1) Just tell them that in your interview. Having someone who might possibly need to leave/call off is better than having nobody at all, especially if they are a good/hard worker.

2) I would take your identity with me to the grave and protect your anonymity. If you're pleasant in person, I'd love for you to come out to the park and work a bit (or interview at least).

When it comes to security, we hire a lot of experienced police officers. I actually set one up with paperwork yesterday. If you work in that capacity (rather than something like the HR Reserves), you would get(have) to do the full 5 hour Discovery orientation training where the theme is fun, candy, and Six Flags. I think you'd probably get a kick out of it. I'll message you with some details in case you're interested.

Things have changed a lot in the past five years, from what I understand. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, and I don't want to say it wasn't legitimate as I wasn't there. However, our restaurants are all given grade A ratings by random health inspections. Also, the fudgery, which includes the candy apples, are now strictly run by retail and isn't a bad place to work in the slightest. One of my best friends is actually the retail supervisor over that area a lot.

So in conclusion, apply for the HR Reserve/Fundraising programs if you want. Don't apply if you don't want to. And the staffing is coming. HWFan out, yo.

EDIT: That "HWFan out, yo" part sounded a lot cooler in my head. I'm sorry for any cringing it may have caused. But also, I forgot to ask something: Everyone else who is going to camp this coming Fright Fest, what all are you packing? I heard that at night, the only way to see is with flashlights pretty much, so I'm bringing some extra batteries.

I hope this isn't saying that Camp Killamore will be another version of Voided Vision.

I think he meant it's going to incorporate flashlights that flicker on and off depending on where you are in the maze, but I could be wrong.

Sorry this is a bit off topic.....

But wouldn't it be cool to have a Gerstlaurer EuroFighter in SFSTL? I think that would be a nice compromise to the need/want of expensive Iron Boss and the always Hyper talk. Not that I'd say Gert over either....but it would be A) more steel at the park and B) a unique to the park design. Just saw an update from a Gert I think in Knobles.....looks very nice! And the SpongeBob one in MoA is great. Thoughts?

I get the appeal, but I think the park needs big league steel. I'd settle for most anything, but something large, smooth, and fast would be great. I only have experience with one EuroFighter, Dare Devil Dive, and I found it incredibly underwhelming.

Iron Boss for me....just something about a RMC coaster....although I do like that for replacement of the Ninja

Ninja just needs the new Vekoma vest restraints

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

I think when the shoe drops it will be one of the total mayhem flippy-dos

I have a terrible feeling that you might be right.

Agreed because Six Flags would buy them in Bulk and they can fit pretty much anywhere. If we were to get anything Custom it would be a transplant from another park.

If we buy our 2016 dining pass now, can we start using it chain wide during Fright Fest? Wanna take a trip to Great America's FF and not having to worry about food sure would help.

When I bought mine Saturrday, the lady selling them said another guest had already done that in Chicago.

If Rush Street Flyer didn't have to be replaced, here's something I think would be cool:

Replace the Ninja with a custom Eurofighter and retheme that area of the Ninja/Joke/Axis Games to an area called the Joker's Circus. You could put Fireball somewhere near the bottom of the first drop of the coaster (as long as it would fit), and you could theme it like a ring of fire that you, the stunt performer/coaster rider, were going to ride through.

Please say there's some legs to this. Would really be a big win for the park!

Sounds cool minus the removal of Ninja. That thing is still a people eater and my boys enjoy riding it.

Sounds like you need a promotion!
