Astroworld TR, October 2005

Recommended Posts

Can anyone give me a COMPLETE list of what happened to all of the Astroworld rides?

Ultra-Twister was sent to SFA to literally rust in pieces....what a shame ...

I don't know if this is true or not, so don't quote me, but I heard that Ultra Twister was damaged in either deconstruction, the move, or delivery. So they could not rebuild it after that.

Is it possible to buy back the land and rebuild most of the rides?

Not really since, most of Astroworld's rides were scrapped and I don't know about the status of the land that the park once stood on is?

I think it's a parking lot for the football stadium. Never got developed.

Unfortunately, all that is left it a dirt field as seen here...

https://www.google.com/maps/place/29%C2%B040'32.1%22N+95%C2%B024'25.3%22W/@29.6755724,-95.4092218,681m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0

Not a single building or remenent(other than a foot bridge) remains. This is one park that I am really bummed about never getting to experience. The theaming and attractions looked great.

I never realized that Ultra Twister once had a vertical lift when it was at SFGADv. Wonder why the change.

I'm sad I'll probably never get to experience one of these, it was always closed when I visited SFAW

Six Flags changed it so it would be easier to evacuate the ride in case a car stalled

Houston Rodeo now owns half the land that was Astroworld. They use it for storage and parking during the rodeo season.

Yep. So sad. They tore down a world-class (I just like to call it that) theme park for a stupid parking lot. Does the normal one like. Overflow or something?

yes.

the lot ALWAYS overflows during rodeo (what with a good chunk of the Parking Lot used for the Midway, as well as all the animal trailers). But the lot also sometimes overflows for sold out Texans games at Reliant.

Great pictures thanks for posting this. It is strange that Houston is one of the biggest metros areas in the United States and is only growing. This park reminds me very much of my sad home park Six Flags America that is also in a major metro area but just doesn't get the love from Six Flags... I know they had issues with parking however the market is so big I am shocked that someone has not jumped on the market. I think I heard some where that Houston's closest park is three hours away.

Cedar Fair or Disney or maybe someone new that wants to enter the market like Merlin should build something that is north of Houston or maybe right in between that triangle of San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. It would be a bold move to enter Six Flags backyard but they have so many quality issues it wouldn't be hard to come into the market and create a park that is open almost year round that is known as a higher quality experience.

Closing Astroworld directly led to Dan Snyder's takeover of the company and is, in retrospect, one of the single dumbest and worst moves in recent industry history. Only the closing of Opryland is dumber. Just remember that any idiot can run a company into the ground and liquidate assets for pennies. It doesn't take special training or know how.

^This is why I feel that the current arrangement with Premier is good because CNL is in charge of the finances and Burke is in charge of the additions. I like to think that people learn from their mistakes, but still without the CNL safety net it could be another spend fest from Premier.

Premier doesn't have that kind of money to spend. It is tremendously unlikely that Kieran Burke could go back to banks and ask for the kind of billions he did before when he went bankrupt the first time. CNL Lifestyle, OTOH, is basically a dumpster fire that Premier manages for them because the market for such managerial companies in the US is very, very, very limited and they do not nor ever will work to have that expertise themselves. They're a private equity firm. They don't do that.

Yeah, it's definitely not a good arrangement. The best way to manage a park is a single owner and operator making all decisions. Premier is very limited in what they can do. I think that they've done a great job with the properties that they have, but they cannot be a long term solution. They would have major trouble when it comes to not only purchasing properties, but also putting in major additions.

CNL is very stingy when it comes to money, which is why Herschend left Darien Lake a couple of seasons ago. They wanted to rebuild the ark, but didn't have the budget to. It's a reason why RMC Predator never came to fruition. Unless they had full control over the park, they wanted no part in it anymore.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 6 years later...

didn't want to start a new thread for these, so instead resurrecting an older trip report someone posted :)

But I just got these incredible posters last weekend (2'x3') and picked up frames for them today.

VERY pleased with how great they look.
