sportscapper Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 I apologize in advance if this has been asked. Just curious on what coasters got better after being refurbished. If a wooden coaster got a new track, or if a steel coaster added or subtracted an element. What where your best and worst refurbished rides. I don't really have a best. But, I would say the worst would be cyclone at SFNE, after making the first hill smaller. It use to be out of control before they made the hill smaller. You would get insane ejector in the back row. I have also heard they refurbished the track for this season, wondering if it made an improvement? Also, I'm going to go out in a limb and say that the New Texas Giant will take the prize for the best one?
BaMiTsPaT Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 ^ It still has crazy air in the back row! As for the new tracking, I was there sunday and It was noticeably less rickety in the areas where they had the RMC topper track in place. The jackhammering was minimized in this section. It rode pretty well, but the second half still sucks.
Mechanic Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Superman: Escape From Krypton should make the list of coasters significantly improved by refurbishment.
liftsifter Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 American Eagle Blue got a very nice amount of new track this season, and BOY is that a wild ride !
The SETGO Guys Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Gwazi and Space Mountain! Almost like new rides after they were referbished!

jjune4991 Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Fire creates a chemical change, is that what you're talking about?
imawesome1124 Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Worst - Son of Beast... Just wait a bit longer I know some things, and SOB may be getting some BIG changes very soon! Are you hinting at a Rocky Mountain treatment?
Sportsdude360 Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 There's no question, New Texas Giant is the best refurb- hands down!
mightbeawannabe Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Worst - Son of Beast... Just wait a bit longer I know some things, and SOB may be getting some BIG changes very soon! Are you hinting at a Rocky Mountain treatment? No, I'm sure he means the bonfire will be a blast! Best improvement imaginable. It'd be the TPR event to top!
Ace Of Spades Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Worst I know of is Manhattan Express' Premier trains. Primarily because they did NOTHING to make the ride better.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 The only "before and after" coaster that I've been on that had any significant difference (ex: new brakes on Kennywood's Jackrabbit don't add much to the experience) after the upgrade would be the Steel Phantom/Phantom's Revenge. Overall the newer Phantom's Revenge gives a more enjoyable experience. I'm not sure if I miss the Arrow loop and corkscrews of death!
greenspandan Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 i305 was improved by the softer restraints, and the re-profiled first turn apparently allows it to actually operate at full speed without demolishing its wheels in the process.
eddie200330 Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 The only "before and after" coaster that I've been on that had any significant difference (ex: new brakes on Kennywood's Jackrabbit don't add much to the experience) after the upgrade would be the Steel Phantom/Phantom's Revenge. Definitely an improvement hands down.....er up!!!! Also mention should go to the new trains on HP's Wildcat.
jamesdillaman Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 If SoB gets more money put into it not towards tearing it down, then Cedar Fair is dumber than I thought... Remember Hercules? Out of its demise we got Hydra. Remember, a smoother, crappy boring ride is still a crappy, boring ride... Seriously, the ride would be better if it was just the drop into some brakes. The world doesn't need a Rocky Mountain treated SoB, it needs a new ride... NTAG was a WAY better ride to start with than SoB. Heck, even Rattler was (Especially if they bring back the big drop!). At least Rattler has only 1 never ending helix...
PKI Jizzman Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 We will have to see what comes of SOB. At least Texas Giant had a decent layout...but they did mess with it and add new hotness; but SoB has a boring layout, there would have to be lots of renevation done to the layout before I get back inline for that piece of crap.
StarTrekGeek Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Best: I really like what BGT did to Gwazi. The new trains really improved the ride. And even though I haven't ridden it yet, I'm absolutely in love with the new I305.
theGrayZone Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Although an older refurb, FoF definitely got better in liberating the upper-body minus OTSRs... but... ankle stapling (under the pads, with the new lap/waist restraints) makes things borderline awkward/uncomfortable for ze vertically stretched folks (and I'm not even talking about the rear, .2, spots in the cars... that's a given no-way row for taller individuals). Also... MCBR creep kinda ruined the pacing... but... I'll personally take the pause within the tangled mass of steel (for a look-around) over the OTSRs any day.
cleusk Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 The best refurbished coasters are Space Mountain and the New Texas Giant. Texas Giant has a slight lead because I no longer have to worry about my back getting brutalized in three different areas.
Ed Farmer Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 (edited) Kind of on topic, SFGAm's Shockwave was dismantled not too long after Kennywood turned their Arrow megalooper into what I would say is the best sitdown steel coaster. I wanted that to happen to Shockwave. It was replaced with a waste of steel B&M flyer instead. On topic: Best refurb- Phantom's Revenge. Can't see anything come close to that, except maybe Texas Giant refurb, though I've yet to ride that. Edited June 9, 2011 by Ed Farmer
vertigomkie Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Best: can't say that I went on the old Texas Giant but got to ride the new one three weeks ago and I must say that the ride may beat out Bizarro on my list at the end of the summer. I don't really have a best. But, I would say the worst would be cyclone at SFNE, after making the first hill smaller. It use to be out of control before they made the hill smaller. You would get insane ejector in the back row. I have also heard they refurbished the track for this season, wondering if it made an improvement? Funny you should mention that... Worst: I was wondering if anyone else has been on the post-refab'ed Cyclone@SFNE with the new topper track and brakes on the final run because the last three runs I had on Cyclone were absolutely disgusting. The wheels grind with a loud scream through the new track and now the ride CRAWLS through the final three hills to the break run. The slowest mid-ride moment I've experienced on a woodie since the turnaround on CGA's Grizzly. Not sure how so much changed since last season's Cyclone, but I really hope it is somehow undone. Cyclone was a goodie two years ago - my top 20 - but now it is fit for firewood.
