Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread

P. 512: Holiday World acquires Santa's Cottages resort

Holiday World expanded and grew like crazy when KK was a six flags park. HW also expanded and grew before KK was a six flags park. HW and KK are no strangers to each other and both will coexist just fine as they are both unique to each other and offer something different. Sure there is a level of competition between the two but I think the media makes it out to be a WAY bigger thing than it actually is. Here in Evansville we are in a unique position were we can go about 3 hours west to St. Louis for a six flags park or 2 hours east for what was a six flags park for a while, and then HW only 45 min away. There really never has been a shortage of theme parks in the broad area region. This isn't going to hurt HW one bit.

^^^Missed that tweet but I agree it reinforces the possibility of a launched coaster if she's referring to the 2015 project.

I can envision awesome things for almost all of B&M's current models with the incorporation of a launch.

Did anybody catch this tweet from the park today?

Just had an "I need to understand the technology" meeting w/ VP James. Our Pilgrims have no idea what they're in for! http://66DaysAtSea.com

Maybe even more confirmation of a launch, but also maybe even more confirmation of a B&M, seeing their launch technology would be brand new to the market?

When I saw that tweet, I didn't immediately think coaster technology. Rather, I thought about theming technology. Something very Disney/Universal -ish. "THE technology" leads one to believe its something brand new, whether it be the ride itself or the theming.

I kind of expected they would've had that meeting way before they got this far....

But at least this should put any wing coaster or generic looper fears to rest.

I seriously don't expect ANY part of this announcement to be generic at all, never did.... ESPECIALLY since a coaster is involved. Holiday World excels at not doing anything generic when it comes to major rides. With Thanksgiving they REALLY stepped up their themeing game...and have been doing so ever since.

I bet the "tech" has to do with ride technology. Either in the headline coaster or/and any other smaller rides they add in this expansion. Remember, the coaster isn't going to be the only part of this expansion...... I just have a gut feeling that this is going to include some VERY VERY cool and nice addition(s) in the form of other ride(s) or attractions. For whatever reason I really think they have something up there sleeve that no one has even considered at all. We gotta remember that 13 mil or whatever it was not only got HW The Voyage, but also a whole new themed area, a new dark ride, Plymouth Rock Cafe (even though it was not completed until a year later) and many many many other smaller park improvements. This expansion is BIGGER than that... and I don't think by just a little bit either.. I really think we are all thinking too small. But again, maybe I"m wrong.

Ok, so heres my question. If this IS a launch coaster, is anyone else a tad worried about glitches or a major shutdown due to tech problems? I LOVE B&M, its my favorite coaster company, but quite often, it seems when a coaster company comes out with something theyve never done before, theres glitches and or flaws either in the very beginning or sometime within the first year or two. Im not saying this will be the case here, but it just worries me a little. I'd hate seeing something as big, beautiful and extraordinary as whatever HW is getting just for it to be down half the time.

There's lots of good and bad in following the theme park scene. Unfortunately this is one of the bad things. The Dragster experienced a lot of downtime in the early years and Holiday World is just wiping their hands clean of G/PP. On Goliath Media Day we went down due to technical issues and Verruckt is currently sending rafts flying off of the second hill Roller Coaster Tycoon style. Honestly this just adds to the drama. It is always unfortunate when the one day a year you can make it to a particular park the ride is down but that's just how it goes. A word of advice I always go by is to fill my yearly riding calender with enough ride experiences to offset the ones that I will inevitably be unable to experience due to weather, breakdowns, etc, despite my best planning.

^I don't think anyone is forgetting other manufacturers per se, it's just that the completed footings appear identical to those of Banshee and Gatekeeper - both B&Ms, of course.

If they build something like Helix I will be totally fine with that.

If they build another Helix I'm moving to Indiana.

The only thing missing would be the rad Helix-station techno.

^I think they can co-exist happily. Just like a bunch of parks in PA
Exactly Competition brings creativity, and creativity brings amazing rides!

^Quoted for truth! They seemed to have always bounced off of each other in terms of providing something unique each season!

There have been a few parks where it was common for people to go to one the first day, then the other the next day. Not sure if they were part of the same chain or not... details are fuzzy. But it could be an opportunity for people to go to both during a short vacation. I guess that may be a small percentage of visitors, but who knows.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to go and download that soundtrack!

I think this could be the all the references to taking a chance on "going to the New World" the 66days site has referred to. The pilgrims were not sure if they would survive the trip or the New World, but they took the chance knowing that the success outweighed the failure.

Wow these storms they have had as of late sound really scary... Not sure it sounds like a family ride lol. One thing is for sure, I'm glad I wasn't a pilgrim on that voyage, but I sure will take on whatever it is HW is constructing! A launch coaster would be super awesome. The GP here has been after HW for more thrills, a steel coaster, and things that go upside down. Anyone have any new photos? Also anyone else put together their shredded paper? Was curious if it was the same pic for all once out back together.

I'm sure the park has done everything they can to make sure they're protected from something like the Timberliners or PP happening again. They know they can't afford to have another product they purchase not deliver.

If it is a B&M Launched Coaster, who think they will use an existing type, like a floorless coaster or wing coaster, or will it be a brand new type with brand new cars and stuff.

Posted

I'll be happy with ANY type of B&M except an Inverted.... and if this is a B&M launch, I think its pretty safe to say it wont be an Invert. Don't get me wrong, I love B&M Inverts, but IMO, an Invert just wouldn't fit at HW, at least not right now. I would love to see a launched Mega though.

Wait a second, where did this idea of B&M's first launched coaster come from again? I figured once we were pretty sure it was a B&M we could scratch "launched coaster" off the list. I mean if we think it's going to be a prototype then it could be literally anything.

^^ I'm going to laugh (and cry inside) when/if this thing turns out to be some sort of Aqua Trax type ride.

Posted

I feel like if it's a B&M launcher (which fits in with everything discussed so far) it'll use Wildfire-esque trains with Banshee restraints. Think of it as having the same chassis and floor with two columns sticking out of the floor holding up two seats each like Banshee but sunny side up.

I'm guessing it'll either be a launching B&M prototype, a family B&M prototype (with trains like SD2K's), or a Nitro-esque old school B&M rehash.

Logic still tells me it's a Mack LSM but the almond footers are so strong I have trouble retaining this theory.
