Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom Discussion Thread

p. 201 - Iron Menace announced for 2024!

Recommended Posts

Maybe we'll see if Kings Island will be the next park to announce they're adding a Flying Scooters!

Cedar Fair should have never sent them to Carowinds

Actually that was Paramount that did that. They took them out in 2004 for Italian Job and I thought it was right up there with one of Paramount's stupidest ideas. Why relocate a ride that has been in the area for 30+ years to another park several hundred miles away

I know this is off subject but I was thinking with a fairly small and cheap attraction coming next year is it possible that dorney gets a " big" attraction in 2016 like a GCI woodie which would fit the budget range. The problem is the noise and the space to put it in.

This ride looks like it will be a nice addition. It wasn't the new roller coaster we were all hoping for, but it will provide a little extra entertainment. If they can get Stinger working, that corner of the park might have a little bit more activity than just Possessed.

I have a feeling it'll be a while, probably not until 2017 or 2018. There are currently other parks in the chain that will more than likely be receiving the larger budget rides for 2016 and it's probably the same thing with 2017. ValleyFair, Michigan's Adventure, Worlds of Fun, and Kings Dominion have not had a major capital investment in a few years. I would not be surprised if Kings Dominion is the major coaster investment for 2017, while I have a feeling the smaller parks will be splitting the big coaster budget in 2016.

Dorney received Stinger in 2012 so it'll only be 3 years in 2015 since they've last received a coaster. I know many enthusiasts prefer parks to install coasters as often as they want, but when you look at the entire chain, you'll see where other parks are in more need than others. Now I'm not saying they won't be getting anything between now and 2018, but I can see smaller capital improvements, much like the Cedar Creek Eagles being installed for 2015, coming here in the next couple years.

Okay, except with Stinger, there have been so many issues with it that it may not be worth keeping it around for as long-term coaster. Plus its a Vekoma boomerang which are awful anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised if this leaves in a couple of years to make place for something new. That being said, "new" will probably be another relocation to hold us over until 2020. Dorney is like the garbage can for coasters that are not good enough for other parks, with Hydra being its last truly new coaster all the way back in 2005. I'm hopeful, but at the same time doubtful that anything actually new will be coming in the near future. Fingers crossed for a GCI woodie or something big though.

Saw this on Screamscape...

Park News - (12/30/14) Dorney Park finds itself in hot water this week as Federal regulators claim that the park didn’t do as much as they could to protect the worker from extreme heat after a teenage girl collapsed near a deep fryer and was burned. From the sound of things there may also be issues with the amount of shade given to those working outdoor vending stands as well and a fine is being discussed.

^ more on that

Dorney Park workers exposed to heat hazards; teen's collapse leads to citation, OSHA reports

Following the collapse of a teenage worker at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, the amusement park's parent company has been cited with failing to protect employees from heat hazards and illness, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Monday.

A June 9 investigation prompted by the teen's collapse near a food stand fryer revealed that Dorney Park's outdoor and food staff, the majority of whom are seasonally employed teenagers, were exposed to heat hazards during their summer employment, a news release says. According to the complaint OSHA received, the worker who collapsed sustained burns.

OSHA cited Cedar Fair Entertainment Company with failing to develop and implement procedures for protecting employees while they worked outdoors in direct sunlight and in small food stands where heat sources exist, which is a violation of the agency's general duty clause, the release says.

The Sandusky, Ohio-based company faces a proposed fine of $7,000, the maximum penalty for a "serious violation." A serious violation "occurs when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known," the release says.

"In summer temperatures, amusement park workers face an increased risk of heat-related illness and death," OSHA Allentown Area Office Director Jean Kulp said in the release. "The threat of heat stress can be reduced significantly by establishing a heat illness prevention program for indoor and outdoor workers. The program should include effective training; consistently available water and shaded breaks; a thorough review of heat illness incidents; and acclimatization."

The South Whitehall Township amusement park was cited for a record-keeping violation, as well, and faces a proposed fine of $2,000 for that offense, the release says.

Dorney Park officials did not immediately respond to calls for comment Monday and Cedar Fair's offices are closed for the holidays.

Cedar Fair has 15 business days from the receipt of its citations and penalties to respond to OSHA.

my comment as a customer when we went back in June was about the lack of shade in the park and how hot it was with the oceans of concrete (I even mentioned it in my trip report).

not surprising at all.

I haven't heard... I assume it's supposed to be open but that doesn't mean it will be. Last year it broke down in pretty spectacular fashion just a few hours into the first day of the season and hasn't even tested since so if it does open with the park I'd hurry up and ride it before it breaks down again.

^I actually really enjoyed it. It wasn't rough at all (at least on my rides), pretty forceful and the seating arrangement added some extra fun.

Ok not quite the same as a GIB but definitely a nice ride.
