Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom Discussion Thread

p. 201 - Iron Menace announced for 2024!

Recommended Posts

After looking at the pics from PTC's site I answered my own question. Are both axles free to move separate from the car itself or is just the back one free to move?

Just the back one, but only in the up and down direction, not side-to-side. It may seem odd, but it generally helps with banking transitions as those are what causes the most stress to the standard fixed axle chassis

This is a pretty good picture of an underside of an articulating PTC train. You can see the cutout where the rear axle is allowed to move. Also, this is one of the weird White Cyclone trains that for some odd reason, uses a skid brake and a fin brake system, for those that may wonder.

You'd be surprised on the difference between a good train and a bad one. Wolverine Wildcat at Michigan's Adventure was an OK ride, but the year the train was shipped over to PTC for its refurb, it was running the best I've ever rode on it. And there was little to no track work done on it from the previous year.

Thanks for explaining that. Makes a load more sense to me since you linked that pic.

I don't know if the trains will have that big of an impact, but I've never ridden a woodie with brand new trains. They're basically the same trains, (except for the articulating axle) just... new.

Anybody hear anything about this rumored gate coaster for 2017? It would make sense, considering they're moving the pavilions around... Seems like they're setting up for something big.

Source?

I've heard similar rumors. I have a feeling there's a chance the long-rumored moving of the entrance + a new gate coaster could happen.

I only want a gate coaster if Alfundo is involved in some manner.

That would actually be amazing. I'd love to see something like that.

RMC at Dorney in 2017, calling it.

I'd adore to see an RMC go in, but I think everybody knows it's not going to happen.

I think it sounds ridiculous too... Dorney the first Cedar Fair park to work with RMC? Unlikely to say the least.

... Now watch me be right

Wonder what the park has planned for haunt this year?

I know the guy that runs that account. He hasn't told me any details yet, but once it gets closer he will tell me more information. I believe he got a job in haunt management this year so he will help make some of the decisions!

Thats pretty cool. I heard we have one of the best haunts in the company.

Anytime I see something from Dorney´s event, it always looks like they copy off of parks in the cheapest ways possible. But I may be wrong. Also, I´ve heard under staffing is an issue.

I do believe that understaffing was an issue, but all departments were understaffed.

I actually think Dorney has a better haunt than any of the other nearby parks. It's not even on the same level as many standalone haunts or the larger budget haunts in Florida but it's fun for what it is and crowds are manageable.

That being said the best haunt I've seen in the northeast at a park is actually Lake Compounce. They do a heck of a job (though still not comparable to the Florida parks of course).

Last years haunt, understaffing was not the issue, but for all the other years the event was slightly understaffed (but not by much). Actually, one of the main focuses last year was to increase the amount of actors per haunt attraction. My biggest problem is that some of the actors don't even try and a few times they just started talking to one another while I was walking through the scene. I really don't expect that much scare from Dorney which I leave that up to the other haunted attractions in the area (Lehigh Valley Zombies, Hall of Horrors, Freak and Fun House, etc.). I go to the haunt to ride the coasters with little to no lines and then if I have time I hit up some of the mazes and scare zones.

Ive done Dorney's Haunt the last two years. It was great in 2014. So much that it made me want to go back for 2015. And tbh it was kinda lame, at least as far as the actors and scare zones (we don't waste time in trails, not our thing). The actors in the scare zones almost all night were just hanging out talking to one another. Also the fog/lighting was just better in 2014. But the waits for the coasters were minimal both years and at the end of the day that's all I really care about with this park.

Haunted attractions, more than anything else I feel like, are completely inconsistent in terms of experience. Any haunt can be great if you catch the actors at the right time and if the crowd flow is right, and any haunt (outside the very highest budget like in Orlando) can be complete crap if you catch the actors goofing off or the crowds get bottlenecked (or if the wind is blowing all the fog away). So to me it's pretty hard to cast judgement on a haunt for its entire season just based on your own experience.
