Airtime&Gravity Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 While it would be nice if there was another park in the Chicago area, I would never visit this park even if it did some how open. The whole idea is completely laughable, and while you might like the Michael Jackson, (and those in Gary sure do), that does not mean it is a good idea to build an entertainment district dedicated to him. The whole project has failure written all over it. Even if on some outside chance that this does get built, I'll still easily take Michigan's Adventure or Indiana Beach over this idea. Maybe we can get a Blues Brothers park built in Joliet. Airtime - who was driving through Gary shortly after Michael Jackson died - &Gravity
dandaman Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Does this mean there finally IS more than corn there? Theres no corn in Gary dude, just a bunch of burnt down and foreclosed buildings, pawn shops, tagged signs/buildings, and a few traces of what used to be steel mills. Meant the state, but based on my 4 trips through there (2 Chicago-and-backs), that seems spot-on.
therooboy Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Interestingly I will visiting Gary later this year. I am NOT staying there. A Michael Jackson Museum/Theme Park has a huge chance of success due to the legions of international fans & subsequent potential visitors. Graceland & Dollywood suggest it could be a very successful longterm venture. Neverland as the theme park & Gary with a Museum made more sense to me, but good luck, Gary. You need it (luck & the MJ stuff). I'll be there if it happens.
Imhotep Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Graceland & Dollywood suggest it could be a very successful longterm venture. I wish they were seeing it that way, because if they were looking at Gracelands success, they would be building this at Neverland instead of in Gary. They don't have a park dedicated to Elvis in Tupelo, Mississippi because who would honestly go there? Between the two, I guarantee you no one cares about MJs home town versus Neverland. Plus, Neverland would be a cheaper investment.. Just put the rides back in, and make the house a walkthrough tour and bada bing. On the other hand though, MJs fans are maniacal.. His global fan base compared to someone like Elvis or Dolly is just rediculous. People will come from anywhere around the globe I'm sure, so this may actually turn Gary around.
larrygator Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 On the other hand though, MJs fans are maniacal.. His global fan base compared to someone like Elvis is just rediculous. People will come from anywhere around the globe I'm sure, so this may actually turn Gary around. I'll focus on just Elvis as this sounds closer to Graceland in theory. So, you don't think Elvis fans are maniacal. International visitors do trek to Graceland. I haven't seen a skydiving team of people impersonating MJ. I haven't seen conventions of Elvis impersonators. Saying Elvis fans are not maniacal is ridiculuos. For the record, I'm not an Elvis fan' but would stop and see Graceland if in the area.
Imhotep Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I didn't say his fans weren't maniacal.. In fact, I didn't state anything about his fans, so how can I be rediculous? Anyways, you're right.. He does have a serious maniacal fanbase and I cannot argue with that, there are people that still think he's alive for christ sakes.. Elvis may even arguably be more popular than MJ in America. However, I don't think Elvis could make people in other countries pass out with excitement over the mention of his name alone. Yes Elvis was big, he has tons of fans, but I think globally MJ may have had more that would do anything just to have a peice of him. Maybe it has something to do with they style of music, or the time period. And if I'm wrong, the town of Tupelo, Mississippi made a big mistake not putting a park there dedicated to him
larrygator Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Sorry for misinterpreting your comment. Your choice of "on the other hand" made it appear you were stating something that was exlusive to MJ. I think people are much more curious in seeing the excess' of famous entertainers such as Graceland or Neverland Ranch versus their humble beginnings. That's the reason I don't think will fly.
Imhotep Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I was, but it was not meant to demean the status of Elvis or Dolly's fanbase I definitely agree with you though, which was really the point I was trying to make with Elvis' home town versus Graceland. Therooboy has a point, Graceland has proven to be a good longterm venture, but I don't think anyone would really go out of their way to see his humble beginnings, or care to see something built in his honor after he died. They want to see where he lived, be a part of him in that way. but unfortunately Odie Anderson doesn't seem to look at it like that, or maybe he wanted and tried to turn Neverland into an attraction but couldn't for some reason.
thrillgeek Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 I can see the museum and the early projects actually going through. I really think for a number of reasons that the theme park plans will fall through.
angryemobeaver Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Well I'm kinda excited since Gary is only about 3 hours away! I'm sure that the 'Thriller Coaster' will probably be not so thrilling, but atleast on my way to SFGAm I could stop and get a quick credit! Also, someone mentioned that how people in Gary love Michael Jackson, that is true but they aren't going to be visiting the park because probably 97% of them won't be able to afford park admission. They'll probably just either sneak in, or hold up a gun to security like at Wally Word.
CorkscrewFoley Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I wonder if they'll have a log flume called the Jesus Juice. Too tacky?
Steelinwood Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I don't know, there could be another HRP incident with this!
kidcoaster 2 Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I don't know, there could be another HRP incident with this! HRP? try Wild West World
Steelinwood Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I don't know, there could be another HRP incident with this! HRP? try Wild West World ohhh.... so this could possibly be an epic fail?
kidcoaster 2 Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I don't know, there could be another HRP incident with this! HRP? try Wild West World ohhh.... so this could possibly be an epic fail? I'd say its very likely... Bet on a more serious note I hope this park (If built) does survive. We are losing more every year than than the number getting built. And this park even in its location is a shrine to Michael Jackson's legacy and that I respect it because of that.
Screamin_Eagle Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I'm sure someone will slam this, but I honestly think a M.J. theme park is one of the most stupidest ideas I have heard in a long time, his so called "legacy" will be remembered enough by his millions of fans.
Steelinwood Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 I don't want to come across as too cynical, and I want to wish them the best of luck though. The same as I did for HRP/FMP. Only time will tell. At least TV guide will have another 20 years of footage...
Bolliger&Mabillard Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 This plan is to high to get over, too low to get under, stuck in the middle, and the pain is thunder.
HowieP Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 The museum I can see. But if your gonna build a theme park dedicated to The King of Pop, do it in a town that isn't a dump. It would succeed better in Florida or California at the actual Neverland. On the plus side, it would be a good replacement for Kiddieland.

I drove by the actual Neverland once...and the nearest city is about an hour away and only has 85,000-100,000 people It's really out in the middle of nowhere...for the most part.
Steelinwood Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 They shouldn't name the park Never Land because it could imply that people should never go there. Is just going to be called Michael Jackson land?
Sasquatch Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I drove by the actual Neverland once...and the nearest city is about an hour away and only has 85,000-100,000 people You say that like that isn't alot of people
printersdevil78 Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 As a large investor in this project, I've finally been given permission to break the silence and tell my good friends at TPR what I know about the theme park portion. After careful market research, our team has recommended the following rides for Jackoland (the name is a work in progress): Hotel Baby Dangle (Intamin drop tower) The Pepsi Flamer (Pepsi Python clone) The Moonwalker (Mr. Six's Dance Shoes clone, must be 48" to ride) We Are the World (boat ride featuring children from all nations singing the same song--currenly in litigation with Disney) Plastique (clone of Fuji-Q's Haunted Hospital, during which guests are chased by plastic surgeons wielding scalpels and face-peel chemicals) Kiddieland (sponsored by Serta) EDIT: Come to think of it, how has this not become a Photoshop contest yet? And don't forget our park mascot, Bubbles!
