ECZenith Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I was able to check out the Del Mar Fair this past Sunday. The midway was abundant with beautifully maintained rides including the Mondial Fighter and Evolution rides. Check out the photos! Xtreme, a KMG fireball Thanks for checking out the photos, watch for other reports from other socal fairs as they come around. Wind Surf was like a top spin on crack, they even had water fountains that sprayed riders! Techno Power Another shot of the Tango, it reminds me of my favorite midway ride, Mondial's Top Scan. The Star Flyer, scariest ride ever, no joke, would definately do it again though. Spin Out is small but packs a mean punch! KMG Speed, I love these rides but they can be a bit expensive. The midway also had a reverse bungee shot ride and bungee jumping for upcharges. The fairgrounds are so large they even have an aerial tram so you can easily cross to the other side The gigantic Moscow Circus funhouse Mega Drop was a good sized tower Lots of flipping and spinning, very disorienting! Magnum, another rare find for an American midway. This ride is known as a "shake" and manufactured by Mondial. With the covers down... This unusual ride is a himilaya-type spinning ride taht has fabric covers that flip over the cars halfway through the cycle It had some decent drops! The Hi Miler coaster I had never seen a Mondial Fighter before! It was a really fun ride, I had no ideas these travelled outside Europe. The two best rides on the midway, the amazing Evolution and the KMG Tango. Both are disorienting and intimidating! Creep Show, a 2 story dark ride Crazy Mouse Bubble House funhouse
canadianfreak Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Wow! That fair looks amazing! I wish the annual fair here had rides like those. Great pictures!
ebl Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I just might try and get down there this weekend or next. Amtrak is convenient, and there's a shuttle from the station directly to the fairgrounds. This may be my chance to finally ride a Star Flyer. Too bad it isn't the 200+ foot one, though. Eric
nannerdw Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I had no idea rides like this ran in America. I'm lucky to even find a Zipper at the carnivals around here. All of those Mondial rides are especially rare to find in the U.S. Does anyone know if the Airwolf or Flying Circus rides have appeared at any American fairs?
SFAfan#1 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Those rides look so fun! I didnt know some of those even existed.
DBru Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Whoa, what an awesome fair! Thanks for sharing! Where is this?
ECZenith Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 ^ It's located in San Diego, CA. As for Airwolf and Flying Circus, they don't run outside of Europe. I'm still trying to find the show that has a Top Scan, anyone know which fairs get them?
DBru Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 ^The Georgia State Fair had one in 2005! (Saw it on the way to Florida...)
ECZenith Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 I remember going on one at the NY State Fair in Syracuse when I lived on the east coast. Since I moved out west I'm not sure if one even travels out here.
padresguy619 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 They probably have the best midway rides to make up for the fact we only have 2 major theme parks in San Diego. Those would be SeaWorld San Diego and Legoland, California. Both parks have some of the smallest rides I've ever seen.
DCody Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 The Mondial Fighter-- and I believe, the Shake-- are both fixtures at the Minnesota State Fair. Very cool-looking rides. The Fighter is so big that it's almost jarring to see it on a midway. Thanks for the TR!
ECZenith Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 The Del Mar Fair as well as the fairs in LA, OC, and Riverside Counties are done by Ray Cammack Shows.
jerryd Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Some quick comments as I need to get out the door for work. Fighter by factory name is a Mondail Swinger. Some of the major rides that are there are owned by independent operators who do book ins with the major fairs. Fighter is owned by a Colorado company called Flight to Mars. Magnum is owned by Wood Entertainment out of Texas. Both of these along with others make appearances at the major state fairs around the US. Biggest problem with the European rides is there weight, they are not legal to transport on US highways. Fighter usually makes an appearance at the Minnesota State fair in late Auguest to Labor day. Last years ride list is still up on there web site http://mnstatefair.org/pages/midwaykidway.html Note that Space Roller is a Mondial top scan that usually gives some really good rides. Some photos from last year.. http://rockopilot.com/mnsf/album1.html Jerry
ZipityDoDog Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I believe the Mondial Fighter made it first US appearance two years ago. It was at the Ventura County Fair and the local paper was stating it was the ride's first appearance in the US at that time.
socalMAN123 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Dude! I was there on Sunday too! I have to agree, the rides were very well kept up. And the Starflyer was super scary! ---Brent
bigstevet07 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Awesome fair! The fairs here in NE suck. You'll get the Kamikazee, a fun house, octopus, cliff hanger, roundabout, and an orbiter. That's it other than the kiddie rides.
larrygator Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Nice variety of photos - I have added this PTR to the Park Index Page.
hansrubens Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Looks like it's comparable to the bigger fairs in Holland.
dino Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Great report. Seems like a nice sized fair with some cool rides that you don't normally see. It seems pretty well kept up too.
Jew Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 The Del Mar Fair as well as the fairs in LA, OC, and Riverside Counties are done by Ray Cammack Shows. Del Mar is actually an independent midway. RCS just happens to book the most rides. That is why you will only see the Fighter at the SD fair (along with some other rides, like the spinning mouse coaster). RCS, however, does run the midways at all the other fairs you mentioned.
BRTeller Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Great fair and pictures. What show was it exactly? Reminds me of Reithoffer, but doesn't seem completely like it. I love Tango's, there amazing. Top Scan isn't as good in my opinion. Again great report, and thanks for sharing. Much better then the fair I went to today, lol.
bflag Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 The name was actually changed from The Del Mar Fair to San Diego County Fair back in 2003.
Kennyweird Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 I've seen most of these rides at full blown amusement parks, but never fairs. Imagine how much it costs to transport these things! That strange Musik Express-Catapillar thing is really weird, I've never even seen one before, or heard of one, for that matter.
Xmeister Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 For as long as I can remember the San Diego County Fair has featured the Hi-Miler. If I can remember correctly the coaster used to be blue and silver. Does anyone have any pictures of the coaster in it's early days? How long has it been around? I also remember another coaster by the name of Looping Star at the fair.
