Ah, Six Flags. This is what I like to hear. Shouldn't security have seen a knife on the guy? Granted, Universal let my dad in with a knife (he always has it with him). But still. Who knows what I'll see today?

They probably just assumed the metal detector went off because of his keys or cell phone. I get waved through all the time.

They don't use them properly, so they should either get serious about security and actually respond to the beeps, or just abandon them and cut the time getting into the park and the additional payroll to staff them.

Why does this not suprise me? there have been assaults at the park in recent years after all.

At least at KD their security screening process is a bit more thorough, after getting past the metal detectors guests are then required to go to a seperate baggage checkpoint where ALL bags are thoroughly searched by hand & not with a stick before allowing full entry into the park.

Meh, I would really rather they abandon the metal detectors all together and go back to manning the park with more personnel. I really don't see the fact that a man got into the park with a knife as being the big problem here - after all, if he didn't have a knife he could have used something else or just beaten the other man. If a guard or someone had been present, this could have been handled better.

I get really tired of seeing so much security theatre popping up everywhere, with people flipping out over tiny pocketknifes, or even bottles of shampoo. Meanwhile, nothing really changes as far as real security goes.

Maybe you should consider looking at the situation in a different light if you don't see the problem of allowing knives into parks.

I agree your additional security points are valid, but to say that a weapon used in a violent act is not a problem just doesn't make any sense.

This is a shame. If your not going to use your metal detectors correctly, don't use them at all! Otherwise your just wasting people's time and making a fool of your security force.

I am no security expert, and I am not going to say its a good thing people can get knives in to parks, but chances are security is really trying to stop people from bringing guns in to a park. Knives can definitely injure, and even kill people but if some one got a gun in to a park just think of how many people that can injure and kill and the panic that would brake out.

^I'm pretty sure knives can be just as scary (and more painful) than guns. Security is really looking out for every kind of weapon. They type shouldn't matter.

It says it was at the park, not in it, so I'm guessing that this probably happened in the parking lot. The Six Flags parks I've been to make people empty their pockets until the metal detector doesn't go off. As for the story, why am I not surprised that it took place at SFA? This park seems to have a problem lately, and they better fix it.

The thing is that where I live, knives are among the least dangerous things most people carry around on a daily basis, and we remain one of the safest areas in the nation. There's definitely advantages to stopping people from carrying these types of things into parks, but I still think most of the security features present around us today are merely superficial and don't actually effect our true safety. Like I said, the weapon could have been anything and this could have gone down many different ways.

Anyway though, Airtime&Gravity made a good point - this probably happened way out in the parking lot, so tying SFA into this is a little unfair. Unless of course it actually did happen in the park, but nothing I've heard blatantly says that. They're using the park to hype this up, methinks.

I also agree. The weapon is the problem along with the carelessness of the security guards. I think they should be better trained.

About metal detectors at theme parks...well, at CGA anyway. They pretty much won't let you pass if you beep. I had to go as far as removing the belt to get through, only made it once through without taking off the belt. They even had my bro's friend remove all of his pins he had on his jacket to pass through. So, I'd say CGA was doing their job correctly.

I think that SFA's security should be a bit more forceful as well, and have the person remove anything metal that would cause it to go off. I would rather go through that inconvenience than risk having some maniac in the park with a knife or whatever he has to be a danger to everyone.

and i thought the definition of a bad day at the park was when in rained; i have been corrected.

last year, i can honestly say i just remember walking into the park, no metal detectors or anything, just some security guys standing there smiling

As observed already in the thread, I don't think we can starting bagging out SF security until it is established it actually happened inside the park.

I think metal detectors are a good thing, it means I can brawl at my favourite park safe in the knowledge that I won't have to worry about any of my opponents pulling out a gun, a knife, or a small chainsaw...though I'm a bit worried about those porcelain guns like in Die Hard 2.

Cedar Point seems to have a very strong security presence, I think they are considered a police force, and have guns to boot if I remember correctly. Though they don't have metal detectors or at least didn't last year.

My local parks don't have metal detectors or bag checks or anything- I'm starting to get worried with all these stabbings and injuries! My home park is inside a mall but you can access it without entering the mall.

Not good =\

*CP. Does have it's own police force sort of speak. Mixed in with bonded and non bonded officers/security. Usually they hire law enforcement also which is why you will see officers carrying in the park.

Well I guess that also answers my questions from a few days ago in the other SFA topic in which I questioned violence in the park.

As for the knife, don’t forget they have plastic bladed knifes that are just as lethal/sharp and undetectable on metal detectors not to mention very easy to buy (Not that almost anything can be used as a knife, heck they could have sporked the poor person). My guess would be parking lot for the location but with it being SFA anything is possible.

We really cannot attack the front gate/checkpoint without knowing the details. Real question do all the metal detectors really even work, or is it another false security?

Another SFA drug deal gone bad, pity!

For knives, they are very easy for someone to just do something in 5 seconds, and this person could have been dead. For a big fight people will notice, and security would have been called right away, but they got away this time. It's very different from using a weapon, and using your fist. A knive is much sharper, and more deadly.

The problem with our society that sets all this stuff up is first off swearing everywhere and anywhere. Never did this society have so much swearing. It's just everywhere. To me, it sends a version of hate. When people say these words, it's always because they hate someone, or treating people lower than they should be treated. You also have a bunch of demoralizing words that also sets up the hate between people.

It just never was this bad. There was a time when c was a word you would never on tv, but all of sudden, there are only so many words you don't hear. Our society made hate words, and people are using them like anything more than ever. You say a hate word, and someone else says a hate word, and it just escalates.

I feel rappers like M&M also bring hate, and than you have songs like the Dixie Chicks with hurting someone which is just not right. To some people they are just a song, but other people try to live by them, and they are hurting society.

i think the guy cut in line anyway.

but seriously, it probably happened outside the park (that parking lot, well, i've heard stories), and that news site hasn't even had an update yet and it happened on saturday so it doesn't seem like it was too major. Just that it had to happen in an amusement park makes it a big deal.
