California Great America (CGA) Discussion Thread

That drone video is really impressive.

Is it a Quadcopter with a GoPro or is it one of those with it's own build in camera?

Judging by the new coats of paint and how dedicated they are to themeing Gold Striker It looks like CGA might be finally on the right path after years of being the bottom rung of it's parent company.

That thing is so awesome! I didn't even realize it was flying above us!

Hi Jeffy,

That's cause we flew it after all the TPR and ACE'rs had left the event. CGA timed it perfectly for when the carpenters were at lunch as well.

^Thanks! It was definitely a fun and very memorable non season visit at the park, was much needed after an absolutely crazy week at work I'd have to say that this weekend was my gold rush. When I got home last night and all night I was on gold overload!

Not goldy alone though made the day. It was nice seeing/meeting up with the group again, as well as meeting new faces and seeing familiar ones

Want to see something even more neat? One of the enthusiasts was able to fly drone inside the park and captured some amazing shots of Gold Striker!

Absolutely amazing footage! Even after all the awesome photos and this incredible video, I still feel that justice hasn't been done yet. It only makes me want to ride it even more!

Great reports! The video is amazing, and kudos to the pilot. That takes some skills.

I really want to go to one of these enthusiast events. Sign me up for Gold Striker media day!

With Kidzville River Adventure removed, it's opened up a nice spot next to the Invertigarden. Would fit a turnaround and some supports ... I wonder if this will be the spot for one of the new Haunt mazes this year.

I'm digging all the new paint, Centrifuge looks stunning. Hate to nitpick here, but out of all this new paint, the one thing that really needs it gets left out again: Vortex. Maybe next offseason?

Google Maps has been updated, now shows Gold Striker construction. Looks like it was taken in about early September.

Could flying that 'spy cam' into the park like that be considered some form of tresspassing?

I think the idea is very interesting- wonder if someone could make this 'tresspass' into the new stadium...lol

I'd think there would be some legalities if one actually flew it over the property line, unauthorized of course. This flight however was authorized and happened after we had all left.

But say that you lived in the neighborhood behind CGA and flew a quad up high enough to get an aerial view of something, I don't think there's an issue. I have a feeling that spy copters/drones/rc choppers with integrated cameras could become controversial as much as many just do FPV as a hobby. I've actually been looking at one of those small HD cameras to be able to mount to my RC truck and get some FPV action of it racing down the street...and eventually get a small quad and mount it onto it.

Speaking of drones, I'm not sure what model CGA has but they also have a drone and have used it in their park to film unique angles. There's a video on Youtube of Vortex taking the turnaround by the swings while the copter was hanging out off to the side. I initially thought it was filmed on the swings due to the swaying motion.

So this is just a GoPro mounted to an RC copter? That actually sounds like it could be fun.

That video is amazing.

Fly that thing over there again, I've always wanted to see the very tops of the Drop tower.

Looks like there is still a lot of open space between GS and the fence next to Prud.

Just watched the vid again, really awesome and very good piloting skills. There were some parts I almost thought it was going to hit the coaster, and when you fly up the Carousel all the way up near the top of the spire, that was really cool- awesome shots though. I don't remember anybody ever doing this before for any coaster so you might just be the first.

Thanks for posting the photos, guys...and I'm glad you enjoyed the gingerbread cookies! They were baked fresh in the Village's Gingerbread House restaurant and two amazing Coasting For Kids fairies tied the tags on and carefully shipped them off to the park.

I've never flown an RC quad but can vouch for how touchy regular copters can be when flown outdoors, in the wind. Doing my research since I'm in the market for a quad (nothing advanced just something to have fun with) I've seen that even the smaller model is quite stable outdoors.

I'm sure there's quite a risk involved but it would be neat to see CGA's copter capture unique views of rides such as drop tower...capture the riders faces as the cabins drop

Just for the record....

I was the pilot of the RC Aircraft that took the video and I had the full permission of the park to do so. We waited until the media/ACE/TPR event was over and all the construction workers were on lunch break so that I would not be flying over anyone's heads. In fact, the surprised looking "construction worker" some have mentioned who made the little cameo appearance in the video was in fact the group sales manager Ryan Davies who was escorting me on the construction site. I was a good 6 feet away and climbing fast when he turned around . In a few shots, you can see the small group on the ground including me controlling the aircraft. With me also was Tyler Currie, who is the Operations Director of the park, and there was also the marketing manager with us as well as Club TPRs own BibbaBrat. All of the raw video footage and 380+ still images was given to the park free of charge to do with what they wish and they have already used several still photos as I provided views of the coaster not obtainable any other way.

I was flying a DJI Phantom Quadcopter with a GoPro Hero 3 Black attached with a 2 axis gyro stabilized gimble. There was still a lot of vibration and rough air as the wind was blowing pretty good as you could see by the flag on top of the structure standing straight out. That is what caused the "rolling Shutter" or Jello effect as we like to call it in some places in the video. The video was shot in 720p @ 60fps and the camera was simultaneously taking a still hi-res picture every 5 seconds. Some of the shots that look like accidents waiting to happen were actually very well choreographer by me in flight and are maneuvers I have practiced many times to perfect. The flying was difficult at times due to the places we were allowed to stand in the site, sometimes it was difficult to tell exactly what the shot was going to be as I could not always tell the orientation of the camera very well. The fly thru of the head choppers of the structure were skill shots as I was 30 feet below and 30 feet to the right side of the openings making it very difficult to line up.

All that said, keep in mind that I have several years of practice flying RC helicopters and multirotor aircraft, and more specifically, ones designed to be camera platforms. This is not something to think you can go buy this week and fly with any competence the next week so you can run out to the local park and take cool videos and pictures. There are also FAA regulations that prohibit the use of unmanned air vehicles to be used for hire, I am purely a hobby flyer. There is a 300 foot AGL ceiling and it must be in continuous unaided visual control of the pilot. Basically, don't try this at home kids!

And why is it someone always brings up using the RC aircraft to "spy" on your neighbors and peer in peoples windows? Sheesh people, paranoid much? There are thousands of hobby flyers out there and have been for many years. There have been cameras attached to those RC aircraft as well for just as long. And how come everyone is all uptight about "drones" used by the police? Has no one ever heard of a helicopter or airplane before? They have been taking your pictures for YEARS... BTW, a "drone" is an autonomous craft, these are Radio Controlled with a person at the controls, not a self flying "drone". Ok Ok... end of rant!

All in all, this was an awesome opportunity the park allowed me to have. If I am lucky they may invite me back to do some other fun things in the future. I think I got to put together a great 11 minute coaster porn flick and the park got the golden shots of the whole layout and nearly 5gb more in raw material.

^Thanks for the info/clarification/confirmation of the authorized flight.

So, I mentioned about a video of the presentation from yesterday. Forgive my shaky recording, was done on an iPhone while I was taking pictures. But all the info is there that we care about

Enjoy!

CoasterGiant, I intended in no way to offend you so if I have I apologize.

Like I said, that was an amazing video and some of the shots were really neat and I do think you just might be the first to do this with a coaster.

I couldn't help but feel excited and thrilled to hear of all the changes and how CF is 100% committed and are now fully invested in the park, now that all of the hurdles and uncertainty are out of the way, and are determined to bring back the park's charm lost along the years.

This is a point that locals failed to comprehend for the past few years. As long as the local government was unwilling to throw its support behind the Cedar Fair it was a huge risk for Cedar Fair to invest in the park.

I was just thinking the same thing. For so many years all of the locals wrote the park off and some people I talked to even thought it had closed down. Since everything has finally been resolved and finished, I think it will take a few years for locals to come around again. I'm glad everything has been resolved, and look forward to the park's future.

^ A big reason people forgot/thought it had closed was that the marketing for the park almost completely disappeared. I only ever saw/heard about the park during Haunt. Otherwise it was like it didn't exist. I'm sure CF will put up a huge PR blitz for Gold Striker when it opens and the park will see crowds return quite a bit. I'm looking forward to new success for the park.
