California Great America (CGA) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Visually it may look strange but the truth is, we are going to be riding it more than we'll be just staring at it

I hope they can pull it off with some decent theming for the tunnel rather than it just being a Pony Express plywood tunnel.

Are you for serious with this? They actually did a decent job with Pony's tunnel. And it's not even made out of plywood...

I'm sadly going to have to get used to the tunnel idea. I feel like it would have been cooler with just the arches, that way you still had the view. I guess we'll see if my opinion changes when I get to ride it and know for sure. I'm sure it will still be an excellent ride.

From what I was reading (Link), it looks like the descent tunnel as its being called is going to have all 4 sides covered making it pretty much almost completely dark. Wood will be on the sides while corrugated metal will cover the top and bottom sides. As we already know it now, it is being labeled as the worlds longest descent tunnel for a wooden coaster.

So, how many other coasters have covered drops? I can think of Ghost Rider (just a roof), and CA Screamin' (2/3 covered)...and that Schwarzkopf that lived at Astro World (Viper?).

Well... not a complete loop. The brakes and transfer station aren't up yet as seen on the last page. But these are definitely the last 2 big ones!

Looking at those pics again... the little hop next the the station is going to be insane. The head choppers above mixed with what looks like some decent airtime will be awesome.

What a difference a week makes huh? On that last pic by GCI, nice to see our resident Elephant still there, big behind and all..

Seeing as they are going with the African shack look (cheap corrugated steel roofing on the tunnel), the elephant actually makes some pretty sweet theming.

Seriously though, as cool as the tunnel sounds, I was looking forward to the thrill of reaching the peak of the lift hill and staring down that huge drop.

The tunnel is going to be great!

Awesome news! I had a feeling there was gonna be some sort of tunnel. I wonder if the station fly-by will also be covered?

California state code: "All wooden coasters MUST have a shed!"

Amazingly, the only wooden coaster in California that doesn't have a tunnel/shed is Colossus.

Star Tower is in need of a paint job. I'm surprised they didn't repaint Star Tower when they were building Gold Striker. I never was a fan of Star Tower's color scheme, so hopefully it will have a new look soon.

I don't think we will see them theme inside the tunnel except maybe a little at the entrance. I do like the idea of flickering lanterns in the tunnel, just don't see them doing it.

Totally agree. The tunnel could be really cool. I do hope it's really dark. It seems like such a waste when there's a ton of light bleeding through.

If they do repaint it, I was hoping they'd copy Carowinds' & Knott's Sky Tower with the American Flag theme. It obviously would fit in, hence the park is called "California's GREAT AMERICA". I know CF repainted Carowinds' Sky Tower right after they took over. I was thinking they were gonna do the same with CGA's since at the time they were getting rid of all the Paramount Theming, we'll see...

I'm lovin' all the recent pics and news! As for the tunnel, I too hope its as dark as can be. There will of course be some light peeking in at its ends during the day, but on night rides it'll really be pitch black.

Night rides on this thing, especially if it's after a rainstorm that soaks the tracks, are going to be amazing.
