gisco Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I don't think we will see them theme inside the tunnel except maybe a little at the entrance. I do like the idea of flickering lanterns in the tunnel, just don't see them doing it.
vacoaster09 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 New pics from GCI facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/#!/GreatCoasters
gisco Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Just seems like the coaster went up pretty fast. Won't be long before they start testing.
Double0Kevin Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Visually it may look strange but the truth is, we are going to be riding it more than we'll be just staring at it I hope they can pull it off with some decent theming for the tunnel rather than it just being a Pony Express plywood tunnel. Â Are you for serious with this? They actually did a decent job with Pony's tunnel. And it's not even made out of plywood... Â Â I'm sadly going to have to get used to the tunnel idea. I feel like it would have been cooler with just the arches, that way you still had the view. I guess we'll see if my opinion changes when I get to ride it and know for sure. I'm sure it will still be an excellent ride.
Mr.Roller77 Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Those pictures are so awesome! I can't wait to see the POV of this coaster!
Angry_Gumball Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 From what I was reading (Link), it looks like the descent tunnel as its being called is going to have all 4 sides covered making it pretty much almost completely dark. Wood will be on the sides while corrugated metal will cover the top and bottom sides. As we already know it now, it is being labeled as the worlds longest descent tunnel for a wooden coaster. Â So, how many other coasters have covered drops? I can think of Ghost Rider (just a roof), and CA Screamin' (2/3 covered)...and that Schwarzkopf that lived at Astro World (Viper?).
JJnCFL Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 The tunnel is a great welcome addition IMO. If I wanted a view I'd be riding Star Tower next door......
Swornenemy Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I wonder if they are going to enclose the station flyby as well.
DCA_Chris Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 It seems to have the exact same bracing as the arches on the first drop, so I'm gonna go ahead and guess it probably will be.
cmullin Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Seems like it is almost ready for testing! Can't wait!
JJnCFL Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 CGA just tweeted a pic with the caption Gold Striker is close to being connected for the entire loop. Two more bents to go! Â Twitter: https://twitter.com/CAGreatAmerica/status/304358626552844288/photo/1 Â FB:
Double0Kevin Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Well... not a complete loop. The brakes and transfer station aren't up yet as seen on the last page. But these are definitely the last 2 big ones! Â Looking at those pics again... the little hop next the the station is going to be insane. The head choppers above mixed with what looks like some decent airtime will be awesome.
Angry_Gumball Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I wonder if they are going to enclose the station flyby as well. I had heard that it was just the drop that will be covered.
JJnCFL Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 What a difference a week makes huh? On that last pic by GCI, nice to see our resident Elephant still there, big behind and all..
rjvader Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 What a difference a week makes huh? On that last pic by GCI, nice to see our resident Elephant still there, big behind and all.. Â Seeing as they are going with the African shack look (cheap corrugated steel roofing on the tunnel), the elephant actually makes some pretty sweet theming. Â Seriously though, as cool as the tunnel sounds, I was looking forward to the thrill of reaching the peak of the lift hill and staring down that huge drop.
TyRush Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Wow this woodie looks better than expected! Hopefully it rides well(thats what he said) which im sure it will. Most GCI's run really good
XYZ Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 The tunnel is going to be great! Â Awesome news! I had a feeling there was gonna be some sort of tunnel. I wonder if the station fly-by will also be covered? California state code: "All wooden coasters MUST have a shed!" Â Amazingly, the only wooden coaster in California that doesn't have a tunnel/shed is Colossus. Â Â Star Tower is in need of a paint job. I'm surprised they didn't repaint Star Tower when they were building Gold Striker. I never was a fan of Star Tower's color scheme, so hopefully it will have a new look soon.
#1rollercoasterfan Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Open, open, open, open, open!!! It's like I'm waiting on pins & needles for GS to open. So close to opening it seems like it's taking forever for the date to come!!! I can bet I'll ride it the most opening day. I'm going for 10 times.
PKI Jizzman Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 The first drop will definitely be something special. I'm sure they will do it right, too. The whole "take the tunnel" phrase came about because of great GCI tunnels right? This should be the best tunnel next to the Beast!
Angry_Gumball Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 The "Take the Tunnel" thing came from Apocalypse down at SFMM...so yup, a GCI coaster!
jray21 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I don't think we will see them theme inside the tunnel except maybe a little at the entrance. I do like the idea of flickering lanterns in the tunnel, just don't see them doing it. Â Totally agree. The tunnel could be really cool. I do hope it's really dark. It seems like such a waste when there's a ton of light bleeding through.
JJnCFL Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Star Tower is in need of a paint job. I'm surprised they didn't repaint Star Tower when they were building Gold Striker. I never was a fan of Star Tower's color scheme, so hopefully it will have a new look soon. If they do repaint it, I was hoping they'd copy Carowinds' & Knott's Sky Tower with the American Flag theme. It obviously would fit in, hence the park is called "California's GREAT AMERICA". I know CF repainted Carowinds' Sky Tower right after they took over. I was thinking they were gonna do the same with CGA's since at the time they were getting rid of all the Paramount Theming, we'll see...
DCA_Chris Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I always thought the current paint job was on purpose seeing as it's called the 'Sky' Tower.
Blue Fire Guy Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I'm lovin' all the recent pics and news! As for the tunnel, I too hope its as dark as can be. There will of course be some light peeking in at its ends during the day, but on night rides it'll really be pitch black. Night rides on this thing, especially if it's after a rainstorm that soaks the tracks, are going to be amazing.
vacoaster09 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 For those thinking that just because this is Cedar Fair, that the tunnel will/could lack the themeing with flickering lanterns.... I bring you a screen shot from a Maverick POV... I'm sure they can replicate this look in the tunnel if they wanted to. Â
