RaptorBoyASU Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Link is here...... http://www.latimes.com/business/la-me-amusement30nov30,1,1639671.story?coll=la-mininav-business This could either turn out really well, or really poorly.
Primogen18 Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Interesting, and would be cool actually. But for some reason this line stuck out at me: "Leisure time and discretionary income are growing and so are service and entertainment sectors." /\ Yeah.. how come I don't see any of this? My "discretionary income" sure as hell ain't growin'... -Allan "867-5309" Bray
Meteornotes Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 I always love quotes like this: Though details were sketchy and the source of the investor's money is murky Yeah, that inspires confidence! I think I'll take the "wait and see" approach on this one... dt
SharkTums Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Sketchy and Murky??? Did I write this article!?!?
Meteornotes Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 ^Yeah, that would totally be two squares already on Elissa Bingo! Dave "will start work on the Spain and Japan versions soon!" Thomas
Gnome Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 4 billion!? Yippee! Even though Disney never built westcot, we may get something just as good! But of course, we'll have to see if its actually going to happen though. *crosses fingers* He added that he has contacted numerous movie studios, including Universal, Paramount and MGM, in hopes of developing a theme for the park. Well, since USH isn't much of a theme park, maybe they would want to put thier name down in a more theme park like enviornment. Also note a high end park that "complements" disney could only mean better things for disney since well, I'm sure they wouldn't want to be considered #2. And if the new park does extremely well, maybe we could actually see WestCot become a reality? *Wishful thinking*
dougr Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 If there's one thing USH is missing, it's an IOA type park. Sweet!
eric1334 Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 Nice! It sure would be swell to have a thrill park closer than MM. Yes I am a lazy arse driver and I hate the drive to MM from the IE.
ECZenith Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 OoOoO a proposal that might actually happen! Sweet.
Satoshi Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 yay Garden Grove's finally got okay plan for decidin' to build new kinda theme park! we're happy to have got 2 huge parks, Disney and NEW theme park!! plus good thing it's real close from Anaheim so we just go down 3 miles from Disney lol!!
deano Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 They might just end up with a few of MM's coasters if it closes down. (which i hope it doesnt)
Sexy No Jutsu Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 Well, since USH isn't much of a theme park, maybe they would want to put thier name down in a more theme park like enviornment. If we get a new theme park and WestCot, I'd cry with joy!
Scaparri Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 Wow. $4 billion is a crap ton of money for an amusement park. If this all comes to frusion, it could be one hell of a park. Sounds like they really have a good thing goin'. Scott "thought Garden Grove was just a Sublime song, not an actual place" P.
RaptorBoyASU Posted December 1, 2006 Author Posted December 1, 2006 ^Garden Grove is west of Anaheim along the 22 freeway. It's most notable for being home to the Crystal Cathedral, and a lot of Asians.
speedracer Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 Have a feeling the $4 billion mentioned is the total cost of the entire project, of which the theme park is only one portion of: http://www.internationalwest.com/Downloads/Land_Use_3.jpg Assuming these were just initial plans, looks pretty small and generic: http://www.internationalwest.com/Downloads/Illustrative_3.jpg MGM is mentioned a few times in this article, along with a separate waterpark and an aquarium similiar to Atlanta's: http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/homepage/abox/article_1363761.php The city is trying to move away from the concept of an "amusement park," with its multitude of rollercoaster rides, said Chet Yoshizaki, the city's economic development director. "We hope to partner with a film studio to form a theme park so the rides and attractions in the park will be based on films produced by the studio," he said. "It's very much like what Universal has." Sounds more like a USF than an IOA: http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/homepage/abox/article_1354194.php
Gnome Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 ^ well they said that they wanted to move away from "amusement park" to theme park, so I imagine that's just what they initially drafted, and once they get a large studio to back the park, they will proceed with drawing up new designs, ect. According to my calculations, this is the area will the park will be built. Just a little under 3 miles away from DLR
kraxleRIDAH Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 Wow. $4 billion is a crap ton of money for an amusement park. If this all comes to frusion, it could be one hell of a park. Sounds like they really have a good thing goin'. Don't forget that the $4 billion figure isn't just for the 150-acre amusement park (smaller than the plot Knott's Berry Farm sits on). It also goes into the three resort hotels that are planned for the project --- then an additional $4 billion for an entertainment complex and retail shopping district. But for a 150-acre park, even just $1 billion is an extremely hefty figure for investment. To give you an idea, the entire Islands of Adventure park was built for $1 billion back in the late 90's. Costs may have gone up since then, but not too significantly. Even $1.5 billion allocated for this new Garden Grove park alone would see IOA quality theming and attractions. I mean, the price tag on the 260-acre Magic Mountain will go for at most $500 million and that's only HALF of what is being invested in this new Garden Grove amusement park, which is about 100-acres smaller.
music11 Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Seems like a good thing for this place. in that picture provided a few posts up of the overview will they be taking at those peoples homes? ^Also if the park is smaller then KBF this park is going to be super small and pretty compact and not many major rides will eb able to go in and it seems that if they're going for alot of rides they are going to have to make them small. Anyways hope this actually follows through unlike CT's Utopia which was an ok to go in for over a year and then it all falls apart. if this does go in it seems like a nice park from the pictures to visit.
Guy T. Koepp Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 I gotta go with Dave on this one. Wait and see. I've worked on several projects that were contingent on investors. For some reason, "investors" seem to get cold feet the moment they are actually asked to write a check for a project. It would be nice though. We could realy use an IOA type park out here. I think the parcel of land is way too small. They leave no room at all for expantion. Unless they plan on driving their neighbors away with the noise. Then snatching up the property to use for expantion. We'll see.
COASTER FREAK 11 Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 That is exactly what they will do to expand! Annoy everyone with noise They could easly build accross new hope (the street on the left). it is a very small street but needed. I think if they had to, they would pull off something like what Disnry did with Downtown Disney. Make the street go under a bridge for the park. I pray this goes through, Disney may look atthis as a threat and possibly speed up the projects here (wishful thinking maybe)
Gnome Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 I gotta go with Dave on this one. Wait and see. I've worked on several projects that were contingent on investors. For some reason, "investors" seem to get cold feet the moment they are actually asked to write a check for a project. I think that if anything, its most likely that the nearby residents will be the ones who kill off the project.
