Silver Dollar City (SDC) Discussion Thread

p. 275: New resort announced as part of a $500 million development plan!

Recommended Posts

The reason I asked about the brakes is because a couple years ago, they were in the Branson area in mid-July and slid off the road multiple times. They intended to acquire new brakes after their trip. That vehicle has since been scrapped. But they're worried about snow/ice conditions after experience on dry summer roads--understandably so.

This sounds like a terrible idea. Normally I'm all for people coming to Branson, but I usually prefer them to leave alive....

Early March is usually very cold here, and very frequently our biggest snowfall occurs around March 1. SDC used to open beginning of April for World Fest, but the last few years they've opened early to try to grab the spring break crowd. Most of the time weather will be highs in the 40s but lows below freezing, meaning any rain that happens (and we get a lot of rain in March) will freeze and become black ice--slick frozen patches that are the same colour as the road. Add to that Highway 65 (the main road to Branson) has several hills at 10% grade--meaning that the road changes elevation at a rate of 528 feet per mile. That's the sort of grade where if you're going the speed limit of 65 at the top of a hill (and those hills are huge) and coast, you will be going well over 80 mph at the bottom if you don't brake.

STRONGLY recommended to get new brakes before going to Branson. Actually, STRONGLY recommended to get them now.

If there is the chance for snow or ice, they simply shouldn't go. . . and I normally wouldn't suggest someone NOT go to SDC. However, after our last trip up there dealing with the winding twisting roads, and the ice (that showed up out of no where) and the snow. . . We ended up sliding off the road more times than I ever care to recall, and we were doing between 5-10mph. . . So brakes were not the issue for us. I even had the brakes checked when I got home (just out of routine maintenance on the car) and they were fine.

So, with all that being said, by bits of advice are:

1.) If it looks like it is going to snow, or ice. . . DON"T GO. Trust me, it's not worth the stress of driving there, and sliding off the road, just to get to a park that most likely won't have any open attractions because of the cold temperatures. Just have them plan for a nice, warm time of year.

2.) Strongly encourage them to go get their brakes checked now. Not months away, but now. If they are truly concerned about their brakes on the roads to SDC they should be concerned with their brakes in day to day driving.

Lately, I have been thinking about project 2018 and I've had a few questions arise. Though, I do have one that I feel has been covered before, but I can't really find anything about it. Is this supposed to be a Mystery Mine like ride with dark ride sections inside a themed building and go outside for coaster stuff? With some of those proposed theming ideas they had on a survey, it does seem likely that would be the case.

We don't know what kind of coaster it will be like. I personally don't think there will be any buildings other than the station, just based on where I've seen footers. But there is next to no information about this project. They're doing a great job keeping secrets!

Like ytterbiumanalyst said, we pretty much know nothing about the coaster. However, from the emails they sent out forever ago, I'm betting we will probably see a very highly themed coaster, and I wouldn't be surprised if it did have some indoor segments (or at least one indoor segment.)

Um... Mack extreme spinner.

There's also parts already on site as it seems the park is doing the painting instead of Mack

That is the curreent rumour, yes. "Rumoured" and "known" are not at all similar.

If it is indeed a Extreme Mack Spinner I'll be making a return trip to SDC in 2018 for sure.

When you do, you have to ride the Runaway, Branson's new alpine coaster. It's fantastic.

You said there was no information about the project which is incorrect. There's plenty out there.

I don't know much either, but the word from people in the area who can drive past is that they are hauling on construction now and there's been even more earthwork going on. They are really changing the landscape on that side of the park... Some parts seem to be onsite, but they don't look like coaster parts. Perhaps they are getting some of the station done first so they don't reveal what is going on to the GP too soon.

Even if we do speculate the correct type of coaster, there is plenty to watch out for and get excited about for this project. Who knows what they'll throw in there when it's all said and done to make it blend into this awkward spot.

Asking for a friend: how are the road conditions in the Branson area in early March? Especially in the mountains/hills. They're potentially looking at going to SDC's opening weekend but don't trust the brakes on their car. Should they get the brakes looked at prior to their trip?

I feel like if you have to ask this question Dawrin should just take the wheel. Forget about the brakes and spend your money at SDC...

I'm glad you quoted my post twice so it's obvious to everyone reading that I did not in fact say that. Thanks!

I highlighted your text so you too can read.

I think ytterbiumanalyst is referring to the fact that the park has not made any official announcements, therefore we basically know nothing about the project, because at this point anything involving this project is basically just rumors. Obviously aside from the fact there are footers and ground work being done.

We also do not know for sure that it is a Mack Spinner. Again, that's just rumor and speculation.

I wonder if there's any chance this could be a Blue Fire clone but with spinning cars, considering they tested the spinning cars on it. I think it'd be great to have one on the U.S.

I don't think we will be seeing any type of clone coming to SDC, mainly because of the terrain. The terrain at SDC makes it pretty much impossible to clone a coaster, or to drop in a cloned ride. Plus SDC likes to keep their coasters pretty unique.

Pretty much. I said there is "next to no information," which is not the same thing as "no information." It concerns me that I actually have to point this out....

Anyway, yes, the actual information is the footers, construction vehicles, the record of HFE brass visiting Europa-park recently, etc. There are bits of information, some of which may prove irrelevant. Some not. Rumours are built out of this information, but the rumours themselves are not information.

Opinions, facts, and theories are three different things. Sigh.

There is one piece of official information straight from Brad Thomas: "Like. No. Other."

That's what he told the coaster enthusiasts at Coaster Christmas.

I think that's the root of everyone assuming it will be one of the recently unveiled extreme launched spinning coasters from Mack. There's not much else out there that coasters can physically do...

We could still be surprised though, and I'd love it if that happens.
