Valleyfair (VF) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Got my Platinum pass today!

Looking forward to some Cedar Fair fun. Also excited for these water slides, as I've always been a water park fan and have yet to go to anything better than Cedar Points (which is mediocre)

I will be doing Cedar and Kings this year, looking forward to some great coasters.

I'll be going to Canada's Wonderland for the first time. I may do Cedar Point and Kings Island as well. It's going to be a good season!

That splash pad is a little disappointing

Why would they tame it down? That seems so counterintuitive.

Did a little searching around and saw something about Valleyfair slowing down Power Tower because they thought it was too intense for their family-friendly park image, but I'm not so sure I should believe that because, even when not slowed down, S&S towers aren't the most intense drop towers to begin with.

You'd think that the park would be more apt to return the tower to more intense cycles with Camp Snoopy catering to the families. There are hordes of teeny boppers that roam the park looking for something thrilling, and the rides there are capable of thrilling but aren't being run that way...

Maybe to compromise, they could run the rides on more intense cycles later in the day, after the families usually start to leave. That way they can cater to families at their peak attendance hours and still hit up the thrillseeker crowd. They could market it as ValleyScare--oh wait...ValleyThrill? The Thrilling Hour--every night from 9-10, intense cycles not suitable for children.

That is an awesome idea! The Thrilling Hour!!! Only at Valleyfair! What a marketing campaign they could have with that. Maybe even have half price concessions! I'd make it 8 P.M. to close every night. Add more music shows and strolling entertainers. I think your on to something here! Propose your idea to Mr. Frazier!

I'm not so sure they're just not trying to cheap out and reduce wear and tear on their rides, but in practice what will happen is people will take their kids on it and complain anyway. There were how many warning signs on ExtraTERRORestrial Encounter at Magic Kingdom that it wasn't suitable for children, but they got so many complaints anyway that they didn't build any more of them and eventually shut it down.

Besides speeding up the drop on power tower how else could they make the cycles more intense? I think trim brakes are there for matinence purposes to preserve the ride. It's a great idea but from a matinence perspective it would wear on the rides. So going back to reading attractions, did they tease at renegade? I don't remember them doing that. It would be awesome if they did kind of a "blackout" at the park where they shut off the lights. In the haunt employee event they shut off a majority of the lights and it really added to the experience. It would be cool to incorporate that into the rides to make a more thrilling experience.

I wouldn't put any ride at Valleyfair on par with ExtraTERRORestrial or anything at Magic Kingdom...and the biggest difference is you can see the ride you're going to experience at Valleyfair, you're not going on unaware of what happens. And those parents probably wanted to traumatize their kids, especially if there were signs everywhere indicating who the ride was for and they didn't take that into consideration. They just felt bad when the ride was over and the kids were still scared. And running Valleyfair rides more intensely for the last two hours of the day is not going to traumatize kids.

I saw that Valleyfair used to have an enthusiast event called Coaster Craze for a few years in the past, but they don't do it anymore because the event attendance was dropping. Maybe if enough people expressed interest to the park, maybe they could bring it back. I also heard that they'd sometimes give lightly-braked/brake-free rides on Wild Thing during Coaster Craze, and if VF did something like that, I would go to it in a heartbeat.

If they hosted another event like coaster craze I would go in a heart beat. Gary, you should purpose the idea to Mr. Frazier since you know him!

I'll shoot that request over to him and see what he says. Sounds like fun!

Ok everyone, just heard back from Mr. Frazier. He is going to have his marketing director call me to discuss details about restarting a coaster craze event! What sort of things would you like to see? This is not a for sure thing yet but its a possibility. Respond asap cause i don't know when he/she will call.

Tours of the maintenance buildings maybe? Looking at the hydraulics and motors under the coaster stations...stuff you would only usually see if you were getting paid to work on the rides. Maybe a walk on the MCBR on Wild Thing--but for sure going up the lift hill. Not sure what else...maybe the guide can talk about the coasters' histories, construction, maintenance hurdles (how they deal with the extreme cold, flooding, etc.), and talk about what rides the park really wants to get in the future, places where they are considering expansion, talk about all the stuff that goes into making the park a satisfying experience...so I don't have to speculate or guess on these things anymore...would be cool. Lol.

EDIT: Looks like they're making a lot of progress on that new little building...I'm guessing housing for water pumps and piping, but not sure.

Coaster walkbacks, Exclusive Ride Times, exclusive photo opportunities, behind the scenes tours of rides, Live Entertainment (Galaxy Theatre!), etc.

Most of what I would have suggested has been mentioned here already so run with that. You can tell their Marketing Director to call the Marketing Director at CP and ask them about what they do for coaster walk backs, camp outs and winter tours to get some ideas of what already works and how to do it. You could suggest to do a winter walk through this year to check the park out in winter and see the progress on the new slides. From that they could judge by feedback from those who show up and by how many that show up if they should do something more in the summer. I would definitely be interested in any behind the scenes tours of the park.
