The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Creditcrazy- When I was at Universal Hollywood over the new years, the ride ops on Mummy clapped when you got back. Could just be that ride at that specific park though.

As I ride operator, I am always looking for ways to make guests happy, pleased, etc, and I think clapping is a great way for guests to realize how much fun they had. It is something I am looking to implement park wide this summer!

The ride ops on Scream have clapped and/or waved goodbye to the riders on most of my visits in the last few years. On Terminator, on my last visit, the riders clapped at the ride ops after they let us re-ride without unlocking the restraints since there was no line. I also enjoy how they say Tatsu in the long, drawn out high pitched voice. I find this and the "Hi-Ya's" on the Ninja amusing. I enjoy the act of the ride ops on Tatsu because I find it amusing to watch and it doesn't really require talking as opposed to what the ride op at the controls was doing on Goliath on my last visit.

She was on the mic asking people if they were from out of town and if they said they were she would ask for "fun facts" about where they were from. It was a little annoying because the answers from the guests were hard to hear and the fun facts were just nonsense such as one person who said he was from NY. She asked for fun facts about NY and he said "it's cold". The ride op responded that is not a fun fact, just common knowledge, which was slightly amusing. After this had gone on for a while, a girl on the train said to her friend "fun fact, nobody cares." I don't like to complain too much since this is all done in fun, but I wouldn't miss this particular act if it was stopped.

For anyone who is interested SFMM has changed their schedule again. Their website now says that they are open 10:30-7:00 on 2/7, Super Bowl Sunday. It used to say they were closed that day. They also posted the same hours for 2/6 about two weeks ago. Now that they will be open on 2/7 I will be going that day.

I just think its interesting they have been maintaining that strobe light, while letting other lights and theming burn out in other areas of the park...the ride hasnt had an operating photo booth in years. Unless, of course, it has an extremely long-life light bulb.

The photos are an outside vendor. Magic Mountain has nothing to do with maintaing that camera.

^^ No, I haven't seen the Tatsu Comedy Hour. The stuff I have seen them do has been fairly mild and just enough to keep people entertained without much crowd interaction. I have never seen the Goliath ride op do anything as drastic as what I saw last time. If that is toned down I am glad I missed it when it was worse. I must have hit Goliath at the ride time of day on all my summer visits.

I was thrilled to find out they would be open Super Bowl Sunday after all too. I was also there on that day last year and had been planning to do it again until they posted their schedule and it said they were closed. Super Bowl Sunday was one of the best days I have ever had there with walk ons on every coaster and less than 20 people in line for most of them. One time on the Riddler's Revenge there were two people in line. The ride op let us re-ride without unlocking the restraints. The only exception was X2 which had a whopping 10 min line. It was the least crowded day I have ever had there, other than school days. When I found out they decided to be open it was a no-brainer to go back to my original plan and go that day.

I'm not in the SoCal area but I'll be heading there this weekend, so I'm wondering whether the park will be open on Saturday. The plan was to go to Knott's tomorrow and then Magic Mountain on Saturday, but it's looking like Knott's will be closed for a 5th consecutive day.

Weather's supposed to be better on Saturday, but the forecast still calls for some rain last I checked. What are the chances Magic Mountain will be open?

It's going to be a tough call. I would contact the park today, and tomorrow to see if they have a time when they will make the call whether or not the park will be open.

Most of the rain should be past this area by Saturday morning, but there still may be some rain that morning in LA where most of the clientel would come from. And if they see rain, they won't go even if it is bright and sunny up here.

I have to imagine the park will WANT to open, and there are people dying of cabin fever from this rain so hopefully they'll open up. May be a slow morning with some closures but people may be ready to head to the park by the afternoon.

Please let us know what you hear from the park!

I wouldn't even count on hearing a word about SFMM's plans for 2011 till this fall, unless, of course we see anything that looks like ground clearing or construction markers.

There going to release 2011 details in the middle of the Summer. I asked the Six Flags twitter guy, I talk to him all the time. They want to get people more excited for it, they will be hyping everything. I've heard Great Adventure will release it the coming ACE event in May.

Well, remember, it is Twitter, so it shouldnt be counted as official.

So is SFMM going to tell us what we are getting or what?!

Well it's most likely a Roller skater and if not it's not going to be big so I don't think it's a big deal that they aren't announcing yet.

The writers of Time magazine dont seem to get on roller coasters a lot. Or they are basing their Top Ten coasters on records only.

When it opened at the beginning of this century, Goliath's 255-ft. (78 m) opening drop was the longest and fastest (85 m.p.h.) in the world. Although the record was eclipsed just a few months later by Millennium Force, this ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif., remains a crowd pleaser. And it's cropped up on TV programs like Zoey 101 and The King of Queens. In the latter, Doug Heffernan (played by Kevin James) very much wants to ride the coaster but gets cold feet after waiting in line for hours.

Here's the complete Top Ten List: http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/completelist/0,29569,1954707,00.html
