P. 2239: Superman: Escape from Krypton permanently closed

The reason I don't think a "city walk" would work in Santa Clarita is because, Santa Clarita is located in Santa Clarita. City Walk and Downtown Disney are both located in places where people are likely to go and spend a lot of time. SFMM is a bit further out, and therefore I don't think would really have the grab that would get people coming out there. If you're going to be going to SFMM it's going to be to go into the park, not to wander shops in front of it.

And as was said above, these rumors have been circulating for at least 7 years. A one point there were actually some plans for this, as well as a hotel, but they just faded away.

I have heard a rumor that AMC is one of the tenants of the new plaza-esque mall being built right next to SFMM. My thought is that the master plan will look similar to what's built by the Edwards theater, which is also a mixed-use business/retail development with 1 "main street" connecting the theater to the mall. If that is the direction of the look it winds up taking, I think most people would be satisfied. If it winds up looking like the Grove LA, then imo people would be quite happy.

Either way, it's a good thing for SFMM and hopefully they make good neighbors working together.

What I don't get though is why they would chose to build a mall right there. Valencia Town Center is maybe a mile away from the park, and is in the midst (or so I understand, I live in Texas now, so news from Santa Clarita comes to me slowly) of what amount to a major expansion. From an economic point of view I just don't see what having a big shopping/plaza center by the park wll accomplish, other then giving local teenagers a new place to get curfew tickets.

The exact words from the Valencia site are:

"This is a planned 121-acre business park incorporating recreational, office, retail, mixed-use, residential, and hospitality use."

www.valencia.com/gateway/flashmap.asp?PropertyType=2

Furthermore, on Sky View Lane the road that leads to the Employee Entrance, there is a CB Richard Ellis sign up which says that office space in now available for sale.

Where is Sky View Lane? I remember taking The Old Road to Feedmill and going in there. Did a street change it's name, or am I missing something?

Looking back I do recall that they were planning to devlope the area around the park, nothing has happened thus far and I honestly forgot about that. I bet all the new retail over there is going to start an annexation war between Santa Clarita and Los Angeles county, since I'm sure SCV wants a cut of those tax dollars.

This is random but...

It amazes me how many people around Vegas still think SFMM is closing down. The other day here at work we were talking about the SoCal parks and someone was like..."Its a shame they are closing Magic Mountain".

I was screaming on the inside. Its almost as bad as when I was a kid and people used to proclaim there was a ride called Magic Mountain at Magic Mountain. Um, NO!

^Oh yes. Pet peeves. When they involve roller coasters, sometimes I do scream. Everyone here thinks Mamba at WOF is the tallest and fastest coaster on earth lol. Today I checked out a roller coaster book in the library and God help me, eighty-thousand people came rushing up to me, "Oh that's this!" or "Isn't that the _____?" My favorite was the kid who saw a picture of SheiKra and thought that was the new coaster in "Houston".

I blame Mark Shapiro. A bad "rookie" move IMO, was to blast the park and threaten to take his toys and move, only to then wind up having to keep the park. Now that rumor refuses to die and I think really affected this year's attendance. To kill this rumor, they're going to have to invest heavily in the park, and market the crap out of it.

I think they should play that Six Flags commercial in other states as well. I mean come on, who in California doesn't know about Six Flags by now?

Spread the worddd. Like we here in Arizona, we'll give off some advertising to sfmm...

(maybe then they'll f*cking give us a decent amusement park)

^ I concur.

I've heard people here talk about SFMM closing. But not as much as the rumor that Six Flags is gonna build a park in Arizona. I really want that rumor to die!!!

Aha! I think it's you who I saw at Castles N' Coasters once! Were you wearing a TPR shirt while recording Sky Diver?

Small Fright Fest Update for 2007:

On the "hold" music for the park, the voice says that Heckles and Twitch are the mascots of Fright Fest.

This will be a smaller Fright Fest than in the past, with the only mazes being Willoughby's Mansion, Brutal Planet, and Deadman's Bog.

There will be one walk-around area in Gotham City, and a show outside of the Gotham City Arch featuring Heckles and Twitch.

Gone this year are the Kids Craft Area, fog around the park, The Asylum, Jokester's Hideout, Carnage E. Hall, and The Parade of the Living Dead.

Kind of sad that they are scaling it back. I always really enjoyed all the mazes and scare areas... As an employee who worked in a scare area (running a sound system behind a wall) I can tell you that it offered me endless hours of fun scaring people whom would not have expected anybody behind the wall.

Anybody still anxious as to what is planned for the former Psyclone footprint?

I pray a Tony Hawk Big Spin doesn't go there. The last thing the park needs is another roller coaster -- and one that has relatively low capacity at that.

If a Wiggles World or Thomas Town is put in, I'd like to see how they'd incorporate it into that area of the park...also hoping they'd open up a pathway up by Cyclone 500 so the area by Deja Vu isn't a dead-end as it has for the past how many years now.

SFMM needs a good woodie like El Toro. No It doesnt need another piece of steel because it has the best array of steel coaster there is to me. It just needs another woodie to replace the horrid psyclone. If they got one and I mean a good one, they will have an even amount of types of coasters.

^ Yes, we're all aware that Magic Mountain is a thrill-seeker oriented amusement park.

But that's not his point. What he's saying is true. The new management wants to change the image of Magic Mountain as a big roller coaster park into something more family friendly. That's the mantra and aim of the new Six Flags management.

Personally, I believe this will work with some of the smaller parks, but with Magic Mountain, it will be many years before that label will change with the park among the millions it attracts in the SoCal region.

They would have a good wood coaster if they refurbished Colossus.

Yes they definitely would. But them completely refurbishing Colossus from start to end is as likely as me finding a Penguin waddling around in the Sahara.

^^But Cedar Point has something for every one (tons of family flat rides) thats something that Magic Mountain dose not have. Magic Mountain is a thrill park, but the new focus for a while will most likely be family's, not thrills.

Thrills became a sin when they attracted disrespectful teens that did not spend money in the park, and repelled family's that did spend money. Family's is where the money is, not teens.

That's a MAJOR dissapointment for me. Carnage E. Hall was probably my favorite attraction in the whole of SFMM. And I have always felt that Deadman's Bog was weak.

I will say that it's interesting that both The Asylum and Jokester's Hideout will not be returning. I wonder if this means work will move ahead on Flashback sooner? I have seen that they have removed the final train from the main circuit.

*strokes chin and ponders*

Anybody still anxious as to what is planned for the former Psyclone footprint?

Yes.

There seems to be zero information on the footprint for now and I honestly couldn't see anything emerge there for a year or two. After being horribly underwhelmed by SFGAm's "Wiggles World", I pray we dont get one of those. I find there's a difference between "family" and "kids".
