WHo would ride the Crystal Beach Cyclone

Recommended Posts

Say some super rich crazy man rebuilt the ride, would you travel to ride it, and would you rather have modern restraints to try to control the extreme g's, or just a lap bar and a seatbelt?

Yes, I would ride it. I absolutely love the classic woodies. I know not all of them were ever the greatest and not all of them are great now, but I fully support their preservation and revival. I would rather have a traditional fixed position or single position lap bar, with or without a seatbelt. I realize that is not a possibility and isn't even necessary to make a ride good, but it's my preference on all wooden coasters nonetheless.

^In case you hadn't noticed, all the rides that have Timberliners that were built brand new are very smooth and low maintenance. If CBC was rebuilt by the Gravity Group, it would (obviously) brand be new. Hades 360 was only partially retracked and the vast majority of the ride is old and has been damaged by the many years of PTCs.

^^so is every seat on a millenium flyer. The biggest reason fro roughness on gg rides is that M&V actually manufactures the ride and they are not nearly as precise with track work as gci. So when the ptc is put on it, every imperfection is amplified every year that it runs with them. I'm assuming that timberline rs would prevent that from happening, considering that wooden warrior is just as "smooth" now as when it opened.

^ Gravity Group coasters are kind of "separated", but GCI coasters are mostly done on there own. I've heard the earlier GCIs like Gawazi are pretty rough, some changes and improvement might be done to make their rides smoother, not saying that Gravity Group+MVR+Timberliner train cannot make a smooth big ride, but they really should learn from Hades360 to really build a smoother woodie like El Toro. For GCI, I've heard the one in China got rough lately… not sure if it's true, correct me if I'm wrong.

For me it would depend on how rough (and by that I mean actual roughness - jackhammering, bumpiness, etc) it really was as to whether I would ride. Looking at the pics and layout, it seems as though it must have had some heavy-duty laterals (especially with stories of people cracking ribs), perhaps like the Legend on steroids, but no idea on roughness otherwise. The first person account seemed to be focused on people getting nauseous/sick (which obviously happens all the time on modern coasters) and a great sensation of out of control speed, rather than the ride being painfully rough in ways I mentioned above.

If I was to ride it, I'd ride the front seat for sure, just to be safe (or safer!). I've been on SOB when it had the loop, and also on some other pretty horrid woodies (or at least ones with some awful parts), and I've been on coasters with heavy-duty laterals (the Legend, Skyrush, I-305, to name a few), so I think I could handle those aspects of the ride.

I think it would be cool for Intamin to re-build this coaster (I know people also mention RMC; I haven't sampled anything by them, but also we have to remember that the longevity of their coasters has yet to be proven, while El Toro is still running smoothly). GCI would be more of a crapshoot - some of their coasters are great years later, while some are awful. I don't think they'd have any problem doing the job, but the coaster might into something worse than the Wildcat at HP. Same for Gravity Group - no problem for them to build it either (having a metal structure might help, or maybe not), but how would it stand up to the test of time?

I've always been fascinated by this coaster. The only one I can think of that "might" have been close was Idora's Wildcat. No lap bars, just a leather strap and a bar attached to the seat back in front of you. Incredible ejector air and the horseshoe turn also dubbed the rib cracker! I was lucky enough to marathon Her the last day of operation for a good 10 times at the end of the night. Was so saddened when the next spring she burnt to the ground. I dont believe the safety standards of today would allow such a ride to EVER get built again, such as CB's Cyclone either. Man, would I have loved to ride that monster!

I will be honest and say that I might not, if there is a good chance of semi-permanent injury (rib injuries are very painful). That's really where I would draw the line for intense rides; if people are consistently getting hurt on something, I don't think I would risk it.

That said, if I was with a couple of friends I could probably be goaded into going on it.
