Best Pirate Ship Ride?

Recommended Posts

Was inspired to write this thread after seeing the swinging ship at a local carnival that sets up here every year around this time. The model at they had set up was the Pharoh's Fury (by Chance), and found it a lot more intense than any other version I'd done (ie. Huss).

Anyway, not sure if this belongs in some other flat ride thread, but thought I'd ask what the other TPR members' opinions were.

I used to really like the one at Kings Island, but after my last trip I see that they have completely tamed the ride. I was so disappointed because it was a ride that actually kinda scared me!

I know they have those giant Pirate Ship rides in Japan. Has anyone ridden one of these? If so please share your thoughts.

I wouldn't say it's my favourite, per se, but I rode the one at Great Adventure last season for the first time in years and had a great ride. I used to love the mobile ones built on top of a flat bed truck. When I was a kid we used to have block parties, and when the Pirate Ship truck came, I would lose my mind haha.

Idk if this one counts but the Berserker at King Dominion is the only one I've seen that goes upside down and it use to freak me out. I remember being kid and just getting over my fear of coaster but I still not getting on it. I am not sure if it going upside down disqualifies it as swinging ship ride though.

The Sea Dragon rides are my favorite by far... they tend to go up higher than most and deliver floater air in the back rows. They don't all do this (The Knott's and Santa Monica Pier ones don't seem to swing as high) but for the most part they're much better than the Huss ships.

My favorite swinging ship ride overall is the Rehoboth Beach Sea Dragon which looks enormous thanks to it's location. It swings within a few feet of a 2 story house on one side and swings over a huge kids play structure on the other side. It also delivers some nice airtime in the back rows.

That's not a visual trick... it's MAYBE 3 feet from the house.

Aren't the sea dragon ships essentially the park model of the Chance Pharaoh's Fury? If so, as I stated before, I agree, those are great rides.

The trailer mounted versions seem to be the best IMO. Always loved how the restraints are so minimal. Combine that with the slightly outa control/rickety feeling you get on traveling rides, and it just makes the airtime seem that much better.

Always have loved these rides and still do. For years Morey's had a great Sea Dragon I rode many times, then had an accident a few years ago where the mast in the middle disconnected and hit some riders during a cycle.

They've since replaced it with "Riptide", a Chance model, which is the single greatest swinging ship I have ever ridden. My lady loves it too, and these are her favorite flats anywhere. Super long cycle and the ends go ridiculously high giving you seriously sustained floater air. Since Ive ridden it, its become my favorite flat @ Morey's besides their insanely awesome Screaming Swing. (This may change in 2015 with the addition of their Flying Scooters, which will be elevated 20 feet off the boardwalk!!)

Related, the swinging ship at Hershey ("Pirate" I think its called?) was one of the tamest and lamest I've ridden.

Now I am curious. Does anyone know of swinging ship rides that go upside down beside the Bezerker at Kings Dominion?

Busch Gardens Florida has Phoenix.

As far as the best, it's been years since I've been on it, and I don't know if it's even still there, but Great Escape used to have a really good one.

The one at Canobie is amazing now too; after years of being barely able to even move under its own power, the refurb a year or so ago turned it completely around and it's one of the best I know of now.

^Cw had a looping ship a while back called Jet Scream. I believe the looping models were made by Intamin (Don't think they produce them anymore though). The newest installation I've heard of was the ACME Rocket at SFOT.

In regards to the morey' pairs loose, you said the Sea Dragon was replaced with a Chance model. But aren't the sea dragon rides already made by chance? Is the new ride (Riptide) an updated version?

Anyway, didn't expect this thread to receive so much traffic! Guess since nearly every park's got a swinging ship, everyone's got something to contribute .

It's possible my favorite claims its ranking only because it was my first of the type, so I had no basis for comparison, which may have caused exaggerated enjoyment (I can't decide whether that sentence sounded more nerdy or dirty). It was Banana Split at Gilroy Gardens, which I rode in 2009. I remember it being a fairly compact one, but I recall plenty of real airtime (though my understanding of airtime was still developing, so that may not be the case in reality).

Most swinging ships are marginal-to-middling for me at best. I've ridden one or two pretty good ones in recent years, but they weren't notable enough for me to remember which parks.

Also, Fun Forest used to allow adults on its kiddie pirate ship (very awkward to squeeze into the end rows). While I'm not sure if it qualifies as true "airtime" or some lesser phenomenon, you were standing up during the swings.

Honestly I have no idea. I only knew it was Chance because Morey had it listed on their site (I posted the link earlier in the thread). I do know that the model they have now is pretty brand-spanking-new looking and offers a much better ride that the "Sea Dragon" they had for years prior.

edit: google helped me to find this article about the accident/lawsuit where it states the old version WAS a Chance model and had been in operation for 29 years. Hope that answers your question.

Not really a pirate ship, but S&S screaming swings are extremely fun!

The thread isn't about S&S Screaming Swings.

They do the same thing

Then my vote goes to chance sea dragons with a long cycle
