18 Year Old Killed on Inferno at Terra Mítica

Recommended Posts

I still can not wrap my head around how this happened given the restraint system involved. However it did happen, and it is a very unfortunate turn of events. I feel for his family, and all those involved.

Andri Freyr sat in the back seat
What is the "back" seat on a ZacSpin? There's inside and outside but which is front or back?
At the end of the ride, in approximately 15 meters height, all security devices for the seat stop working and he falls out of the roller coaster.
I feel terrible for this family and don't for a second accuse them of giving false information intentionally but this seems like the most unlikely scenario of anything that could possibly happen, I don't think it's even physically possible for the hydraulic restraints to just release. Even assuming for a second that the restraints spontaneously unlocked, the seatbelt should have still done it's job. Seat belts don't just spontaneously release, especially Intamin seat belts, which like someone else mentioned are heavy duty and don't get unlocked accidentally since they have to be grasped on both sides to unlock them.

If by some snowball's chance in hell the restraints did spontaneously unlock we can expect Insane, Green Lantern, and every other ZacZpin to be shut down for quite a while...but I really doubt that's the case. In the heat of crazy moments like this people (understandably) don't tend to remember details very well. Again, look at NTAG and all the eye witness accounts that turned out to be false. I'm waiting for some factual information to come from investigators.

I really cannot imagine how this could ever happen. A roller coaster with hydraulic lock system, over the shoulder straps and very strong seat belts sounds impossible to allow someone to fall out of. For the New Texas Giant case, maybe the seat belts can provide a bit of extra protection because after all, they are locked. But for Inferno, I really cannot think of any coasters with new technology that offers another layer of protection.

Look forward to hear the result of the investigation.

Do I really hear enthusiasts questioning how the seat belt magically came undone on the brake run. I don't recall the specifics of my rides on Zac Spins, but I know on most other Intamins, I can disengage the seat belt while on the brake run.

Not questioning whether its possible for a person to undo it, questioning that it could have come off by itself or inadvertantly.

From what I've read and witnessed myself while working at Kirnu, my top guess is that the seatbelt wasn't properly fastened if at all. That plus if the rider was larger than average and the gap between the lapbar and seat was big enough, he could've slipped between them. I've seen some people opening their seatbelt already on the lift hill and it's our duty as operators to stop the ride and reclip the belt.

But of course I'm not blaming anyone for doing something wrong. I wish the best for everyone involved and I'm just trying to make all future riders feel more safe.

From the little we have heard, that seems most probable, rather than a catastrophic failure of the harness. I recall that a developmentally disable boy was somehow able to get under the harness on PGA's drop tower, which I also thought was an impossibility, given the design. We shall see.

Whoever unbuckles the seatbelt on purpose on the lifthill should have their wristbands cut off.

That this ride produces "different ride every time" puts in a different category than most coasters. This affects the predictability of stresses, makes the reliability record of the restraints in other applications nonapplicable, and reduces the chance of any kind of gradual failure producing warning signs.

I was on this ride 24 hours before this awful tragedy occurred, can`t say it was a pleasant experience....it was a short bone-jarring ride, lots of spinning and sudden stops, with the harnesses getting a real work-out.Nothing like the smooth speed of other coasters like The Dragon Khan or Sheikra.

New article

Today Helsingin Sanomat (biggest newspaper in Finland) stated, that Terra Mitica had made changes to the restraint system without permission from Intamin. Although Kirnu still has the original seats and restraints, it will receive new seats which will be mounted this weekend and Kirnu will resume operating next week.

...Seriously WTH? What kind of a park allows or actually does modifications to ANY ride without permission from manufacturer? But I have to say I am glad the reason was found and that it wasn't any of the operators fault.

Ride accidents don't normally make me less likely to ride a particular ride or type of ride because we know better, but finding this out (if its true) would definitely make me less likely to visit this particular park. I've never heard of a park doing something like that, and I'm surprised it would happen anywhere outside of China.

There has been an injury on a trapdoor slide at a waterpark owned by Terra Mitica's owners. The injured claimed

that the ride is unsafe and opened 10 MINUTES after the accident.

Unsafe or not, I was shocked that they didn't even close the ride long enough to disinfect it after all the blood that was in the water.

Wow, I was just thinking about something like that water slide incident happening when I was on the trapdoor slide at Kentucky Kingdom. I can't believe they would re-open the slide without doing a thorough inspection of the dropping mechanism.
