megamatt Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Hi, I was wondering something. Which park model of swinging ships do you like the best? Which do you think are the best overall? Are there any specific ones that are run better by the park that you could mention? Any very well themed ones? I tend to skip them, to be honest. Something about the motion of them tends to get me. Sorry if the mods find this topic pointless.
RollerCoasterSmi Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 The best one I can think of is The Bounty at Drayton Manor, it is amazing in the back row, you literally float out your seat. I think in terms of theming, I love the Thorpe Park's banana themed pirate ship is pretty cool.
Rydel Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 The pirate ships at Nagashima Spa Land look pretty amazing (the small pirate ship is the size of a "normal" ship). http://www.coastergallery.com/japan/N08.html
larrygator Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 (edited) I don't know how many Swinging Ship afficianados are out there. I never even notice the manufacturers. The one that I thought was run best was at Astroland. The ride operators at Astroland took pride in terrifying and nauseating riders. Edited November 20, 2011 by larrygator
RollerCoasterSmi Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 ^^ Woah, I adore pirate ships (the airtime and butterflies feeling) but I have never seen anything like that; 200ft & dueling... COOL!
dominoes Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 The best one I have been on is Black Buccaneer at Chessington. You come very close to the trees, and you float out of your seat ALOT...
simon8899 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 The seldom seen Intamin pirates are best - like Halve Maen at Efteling. Bigger than the Huss ships and with more airtime.
nemesis-storm Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 The best one I have been on is Black Buccaneer at Chessington. You come very close to the trees, and you float out of your seat ALOT... I agree, I think it's the only one I have re-rode.
cfc Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Swinging ships are a type of flat ride I like (I'm not into flats, either). The one at Lake Winnie runs a pretty long cycle and has a nice setting over the water.
DougMJr Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 For me, I usually only ride pirate ships to kill time, or if it has a short line and on the way to my next attraction. The best one I can remember was the swinging ship that used to be at Martin's Fantasy Island. When I rode it that thing was haulin'. Almost hanger air in the last rows.
CorkscrewFoley Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Here's some on rode footage I found of it at Nagashima. The things is enormous!
vuurvogel Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I like this one in Italy. It is inside a tent and you can stand in it (the cages). Pretty awesome Standup Swinging, woohoo
deguy123 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 The one in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is probably the best I've been on because it seems to go extremely high. Also the fact it just barely (seems that way looking at certain angles) misses a beach house close to the ride is always fun.
eddie200330 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I have found the Huss brand like Hershey's to have more of a "flat" or "level" set of seats, thus preventing the airtime so to speak. The version that Busch Gardens has is more of an arc in the seating, and when you are in the last row, you really get that falling out of your seat feeling. The carny model that DelGrosso's has is also good for that. All photos courtesy TPR park index..... Hersheypark Pirat Battering Ram BGW DelGrosso's
ernierocker Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 All I know about these things is that if one is located in the Northeast it is required to be named "Sea Dragon" by national law. Rye's Playland Morey's Pier Clementon Park
coasterbill Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 The one in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is probably the best I've been on because it seems to go extremely high. Also the fact it just barely (seems that way looking at certain angles) misses a beach house close to the ride is always fun. I could not agree more.
rollin_n_coastin Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 (edited) ^^I think Sea Dragon is the model name for the Chance version of swinging ships. Intamin's is the "Bounty". Total geek out here, I love my flats You're right though, total originality in naming. Love the stand up one! Have to try one of those. Edited December 5, 2011 by rollin_n_coastin
cfc Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Hmm--forgot about the nicely themed Port of Pirates at Aqua Stadium in Tokyo.
Anything Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 The Wave at Lightwater Valley was always the best in this country.
Sir Clinksalot Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Surprisingly, I think the one at Gilroy Gardens is one of the best I've ridden.
coasterbill Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 ^^I think Sea Dragon is the model name for the Chance version of swinging ships. I generally prefer SeaDragon's but they're not all that popular with major parks probably because of the lower capacity.
Moose Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 This is one type of flat that makes me turn all sorts of shades of green. There's something about the motion that makes me quite ill. Oddly enough I can usually do falling stars and magic carpet style rides. Is anyone else similarly affected?
Sir Clinksalot Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 ^ My son is, but he can also do falling stars (and loves them). Any kind of "Swing Ride" he doesn't care for. But other kinds of spinny rides he's fine on. He's done Frisbee's, etc and all fine.
webgoof Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 I really enjoy the Rocket-themed one at SFOT, as it goes completely inverted, and just keeps you hanging there... I had been told that it came from Astroworld, but I have no way to validate that as fact... SFOT does have another ship-themed swinging ride, but I've never ridden it, simply cause it doesn't invert, and the rocket one does!
eddie200330 Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Not really a big fan of the looping variety. I can't stand the restraint systems and how tight they staple you in. It always seems that when it starts falling and you are in the backwards motion, the shoulder harness sucks in so much it hurts to breathe.
