Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

p. 777: Winterfest starts on November 29!

^ The loop was actually fine. The execution of the construction was the fail. Here the construction was fine, but apparently the design was too intense. I'd classify it as more of an engineering oversight than a failure, though. If it blew over in a small breeze, THAT would be an engineering failure...

^ That's how I view it too. I view an engineering failure as something catastrophic, as in the ride collapsing upon itself or the mechanics just plain not working.

If you haven't ridden both versions of the ride you can't make a comment ---

Other failures listed here don't seem to me to be in the same category. Yes there have been failures resulting in injury (SOB), yes there have been failures resulting in removal of elements (SOB, Maverick), but I can't remember the last time a ride advertised as a 305 foot, 94mph giga coaster was cut down to a 79.1mph ride with a first drop that drags all the way down. It might be dramatic to claim it's the worst failure ever - but to anyone who got to experience the 94mph the difference is unlike anything else I've seen in coasting. A trim brake here or there on most rides is annoying, but understandable, and usually doesn't heavily affect the experience. I would say trims that turn a 94 mph ride into a 79 mph ride do in fact heavily affect the experience, especially when they make you hang into an OTSR while going down a giga drop! Can we really consider it a drop when it's being held back by magnets the entire way?

I guess all of you guys defending the park will be totally happy a few years from now when someone opens and advertises the world's first 500 foot tall ride, then 2 weeks after it opens they trim 350 feet of the first drop down. Nope... not a failure at all...

The fact that park continues advertising this ride as having speeds over 80 mph (the new shirts say 85) is false advertising, something that I would hope everyone could agree is shady and wrong.

I guarantee you the shirts were ordered before the trims were fully installed, they thought it would only be trimmed to 85. Parks aren't intentionally misleading the public.

It was claimed that the Beast still went over 65 mph for years after it had been trimmed down to no more than 52-54 (We had speed displayed in the control room)

If you know any thing about coasters you would know that depending on the weather/ wight of the train/ and the life of the wheels , speeds will very greatly. So your statement of false advertising has no merit.

OMG!! I bought a shirt from Paramount's Great America in 2003 that says Stealth is the World's Only Flying Coaster. I should alert the media and my lawyers right now as that was truly shady and wrong.

Dude, it's a shirt and a small difference...not the end of the world.

Oh and if you want a chance at getting laid you probably shouldn't be buying coaster shirts anyway!

Well, in my defense I only wear my coaster shirts at theme parks and when I run or go exercising or something. I don't think I've ever tried to get laid while wearing a coaster shirt.

I suppose it's "cute' when a girl wears a coaster shirt. Lousy double standard...

Anyway, I think it's obvious that I305 may be a work-in-progress. I hope some sort of solution arrives within the next year or so.

Jameswilson88 is one of kdfansite's (yeah, THAT site, can you say train wreck full of sandy vaginas?) biggest whiny babies about this whole ordeal. He's probably one of those people that sleeps with a postcard of his favorite roller coaster under his pillow and refers to the rides as if they were real people. Every time someone like him offers an opinion on the ride it just comes off as a three year old child rolling on the floor of Food Lion because mommy and daddy wouldn't get him his favorite sugary cereal.

I have no bias to the park, no bias to the ride, and I'm giving the most honest review of it I can possibly give. I rode it before and after the trims. While it certainly is not as fast or intense as it used to be, it's still a VERY high quality ride. For a park that had one of the worst coaster collections in the country until 2008, they should be a little more grateful.

I just want to go on record to say that this guy is 3 for 3 in the COMEDY GOLD catagory on TPR.

Not sure we've had anyone else with this kind of track record so far.

I'm on the edge of my seat to see what he posts next...

This is absolute pure comedy gold. Is he going to be on the next season of Next Comic Standing? If so, I will be tuning in weekly. I hope he holds out on the Intimidator jokes until the final round because that will win him the whole thing!

one of the Worst coaster collections pre 2008? thats a little over dramatic.

Rebel yell had some hard times but has always delivered a fun ride and is running better than ever this year

Grizzly, IMO is one of the most underated woodies ever. Grizzly has very fast hills wth good curves/laterals and airtime.

Hurler- used to be good '94-'99

XLC- what a mess

Shockwave-meh

Volcano- still considered by many as one of the best inverteds (a great experience but repetitive design)

Avalance- Great family/date coaster and the only one of its kind built in the USA

Ghoster coaster- Still the best junior woodie with alot of Air for a kiddie coaster

Anaconda- typical Arrow with nice slow corkscrews over water

Flight of fear- many people love it, good indoor coaster

Ricochet & BLSC are nice family coasters

IMO KD has a Solid collection but no where near one of the worst.

as for the question about pics of the new trims they are impossible to get a photograph of them without taking an onride pic (maybe from the top of pipeline peak) Basically they are about 15ft in length parallel to the ones on the left side at the bottom/end of the mid drop brake run (MDBR)

^ Thanks for answering Jeff. I'm trying to picture where on the ride you are talking about, but my mind is drawning a blank at the moment. I do agree with you about Grizzly being underated. My only trip to the park was in 2007 and I thought it was a pretty good coaster.

This is roughly the distance of the new brakes on the right side of the track.

All the trims you see in this pic were located on the left side of the track.

Plus all Brakes were removed from the Airtime hill that was previously covered in them.

Take The Tunnel shirts get you super laid however!

Isn't that a euphemism for anal sex?

Yeah Within the next year or so the park will probably install another coaster that'll make us totally ignore i305 & then the whole cycle will begin again starting with "ohh the layout stinks" & ending with "omfg the world's coming to an end because of the "evil" trims".

We're beating a dead horse here & the trims aren't going to be removed just because people on a message board complain about their installation.....there are other issues related to KD that we can discuss but the complaining about i305 recieving trims is getting real old(and boring) real fast.
