Hey guys!

Everyone knows the real reason people watch the Superbowl is for the commercials. What were some of your favorites? Ones that sucked? Any surprises?

If you missed them, there's a pretty good rundown here: http://www.superbowl-commercials.org/cat/2010

I'll start!

- Google Ad - I really liked it. Thought it was very intelligent and heartwarming. Just a really clever commercial!

- Homeaway.com - It was amazing seeing the 'Vacation' cast back together, but boy did poor Chevy Chase look old!!! Cute idea, "complementary with an E". Great!

- Kia - Come on, it had Muno from Yo Gabba Gabba in it, and Monte Carlo! Cute.

- Snickers - Betty White is awesome

- Coke Ads - I HATED the sleep walking ad, just didn't get it at all, but then the Simpsons one was sooooo well done, even down to the fact that they didn't have to pay for almost any of the voice actors!!!

What are your thoughts?

I thought this was the worst year for commercials in a very long time. I thought the best one was the Google one, with the Simpsons coke one being second. A couple of the other ones were good (Muno!), but most were just stupid ideas or rehashed crap that we've seen before.

AND ENOUGH WITH TALKING BABIES ALREADY!!!! Seriously, not everyone on Earth is amused by babies. Please stop.

Watching this year's commercials really made me think that someone needs to hire me and Ice Bat to make ads for them...

I thought they were pretty horrible this year as well, there were only a couple I really found even remotely funny or good, and there were FAR too many CBS ads, I don't ever remember there being that many ads for the network's own shows in past years, it seemed like literally every other commercial was for CSI or Survivor. That aside, I thought the best ones were the Simpsons Coke commercial and the one Etrade Baby commercial where the one baby was talking to his girlfriend over the webcam.

Agreed--the talking babies are just plain creepy. They were never "cute." This is especially true of the ad that implies that the babies are "dating." I didn't get the "sleepwalking Coke" ad, either.

One of the overriding themes is how women symbolically emasculate men, and how men need to buy certain products (such as Dodge sports cars and even Dockers) to combat this. Nohting new here, but the one where the guy needs to buy a handheld TV because his wife has "removed his spine" by making him go shopping with her during football season was particuarly dumb. Yeah, being an obnoxious jerk (with yet another portable electronic device) in public makes you a man again!

Taco Bell, E*Trade, and Doritos should be charged triple to advertise next year.

Seriously, next year I'm gonna use the commercials to do what I normally do during a game....take a crap or grab another beer. Or both. If Madison Ave. is gonna continue to bat around .250 for the Super Bowl, I'm not gonna bother watching anymore.

The night's bright spots: Larry Bird on Mickey D's spot, The Simpsons with Coke, Letterman-Oprah-Leno (love the simplicity and cleverness), and Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.

The Google one is the only one that stood out to me.

My friends and I were laughing at the number of occurences of men in their underwear and midgets. Seemed to occur at least once in every commercial pod.

^I was looking forward to your insight. I really was impressed by that Google ad as well. Just seemed creative and not dumbed down.

To tell you the truth, this year the party I was at was very loud and I really didn't catch as many commercials and hardly any sound. That's one of the reasons the Google one stood out with just the music.

Actually thinking of unaided recall only Google, Budweiser (Where people formed the human bridge) and the e-Trade spots were ones that I could recall.

As people mention the Coke ones, and Snickers I remember them, but if the ad did not leave an impression when airing in this environment it is wasted money.

FYI - There were no more program tune-in spots than usual this year.

Dave Thomas - Unfortunately many Agency creative folk have awesome ideas that get killed and watered down by the client and you and Ice Bat are still an acquired taste. You're not ready for the Big Time, yet.

Oh, I know this. I used to work on TV commercials when I lived in LA. I have many amazing stories of ad execs in the editing bay totally destroying commercials with their "creative input".

I still think setting me and Ice Bat loose with a video camera is going to come up with a better ad than most of what was shown yesterday. And at a lot lower cost point.

-Keep yo hands off my mama, keep yo hands off my Doritos.

-I also liked the bud commercial where the plane crashed and they party instead of calling for help.

-Brett Favre winning MVP in 2020. "After 29 seasons and being 50 years old...I should retire after this. I dunno." Ha!

All in all, I personally wound them to be pretty good this year. I enjoyed them at least.

I, like most of you, enjoyed the Google commercial, despite its excessive corniness. The Doritos and E Trade commercials made me chuckle, as did the Megan Fox commercial, although that last one was only because of one part. When the very obviously gay guys slap each other was hysterical to me, regardless of its use of an extreme stereotype that I generally don't appreciate. But it was harmless in that setting and I laughed my toosh off at that part. But other than those, I can't really remember many of them. I thought the people bridge one was awful, as was the Clydesdales commercial. Overall I'd say it was a decent year, pretty on par with how they've been going in recent years.

The Google ad really captivated everyone in the room. People talked through most of the other commercials but the room got silent for the Google one. It was simple yet moving - very well done.

CareerBuilder's Casual Friday was my favorite...I about choked on my beer when that overweight lady in her bra and Underalls came running down the hall - pure awesomeness!

My other favorites:

Snickers w/Betty White

Kia

Brett Farve

Punxatawney Polamolu

Griswolds

Simpsons/Coke

Volkswagon Punch Bug

Bud bridge

Google

Dorito boy slaps date

Epic fails:

All Go Daddy commercials

Dr Pepper w/Kiss

Bud Light asteroid

Doritos dog collar

E-trade babies

Hands down the Google ad was the best one. Other than that Audi, Doritos kid version and Simpsons Coke are the only ones that are even worth a chuckle.

The McDonalds ad was ruined by cheesy graphic work. Seriously couldn't they get Lebron and Howard to do some real dunks?

The last few years has been pretty bad for superbowl ads, nothing memorable like Terry Tate the office linebacker.

I have a kid, and I still can't stand the talking babies commercials. They're just not clever, not interesting, and don't make sense.

What is this the 80's? Where's John Travolta and Kirstie Alley?

I hate, and always have, the ETrade commercials.

My personal favorite was the Doritos Samurai.

Also, everyone year people claim it's the "worst year in a long time for commercials" or whatever. We always look more fondly back on them than what they actually were. The group you are with matters.

I didn't watch the big game, I watched the puppy bowl instead. I caught most of the commercials today on youtube, but it seems I have missed a few.

I agree. Google took the prize. Simple, yet very very good. It goes to show you you don't need big production values, T&A, or bathroom humor to make a commercial that gets noticed.

Anyone see the BoostMobile ad?

"My tight end in a cheetah print THONG!"

I barfed. End of story.

The ads were terrible this year, the last few years, including XLIII last year had excellent ads. This year was just bad.

The only ones that really made me chuckle were the Boost Mobile Shuffle, Simpsons Coke and Homeaway.com Griswolds. The Google one was nice, but... I guess I just go for the comedy.

By the way, if you check out the Simpsons commercial online, there were two small details I thought were pretty neat: Just as the camera is scrolling up to Milhouse on the kite at the end, Bart, in the background, shakes up a Coke and hands it to Homer, who opens it, spraying Coke all over himself; and the kite Milhouse is riding on is made up of partially of the artwork from Mr. Burns' estate that's being loaded into the pickup truck at the beginning of the ad.
