Coaster Palooza Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 ^Kevin, my friend was trying to sell his tickets on-line, but there aren't any takers. I guess there aren't a lot of Calgary fans out here. I am going to the game on Thursday with him. He still has 2 tickets for sale to the game. He wants to sell them.
TheBannedKid Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 So I know I'm not 21 but... I was at a concert this weekend and was getting a soda and some peanuts and the lady helping me must have been preoccupied since she got me a beer! I didn't say anything and took it, but it was crappy Bud Light.
DerekRx Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Today happens to mark the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. While I would love to celebrate by drinking one of the beers offered by Anheuser Busch or Yuengling at the time, I drink a little bit more than the 3.2% max offered on this day. So instead I'll drink some local stuff. For an old time beer, this one has a nice honey sweetness to it and is crisp. Here's to FDR and getting rid of no drinking!! Follow that up with another beer made by them, one that existed back then (sort of), Reading Premium A good hoppiness, but with a very thin malt backbone, I think it tastes better on tap, more solid A closeup of the label First up, a newly bottled brew of one of my favorite named beers out there, Legacy's Hoptimus Prime, a double IPA brewed right down the road
Rugged One Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 ^ Where are Tuesday nights pics at? Oh yeah, and I especially can't wait to try out this bomber of Bubba Face Porter. Woo Hoo! Also, on Tuesday night, we came home to find that my first package of beers from Bubba came a day early. Lots of good stuff in there and I'm looking forward to getting into some of it tomorrow. And this really is a tasty Hefe. Lots of wheat and yeasts, orange zest, lemon, banana, and clove. All those great Hefe tastes packed into one hugely drinkable package. Prost! After Derek had this over the weekend, it encouraged me to drag this out of the fridge. #40 in the world, it's the Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier.
DerekRx Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Got Tuesday's pics right here, was just waiting for more activity around these parts first so I don't double post. Guess people don't drink during the week anymore! Heath's friend from NC was in the area for training this week and wanted to meet up with him for some fun. Since he recently tried some Stoudt's stuff and enjoyed it, it was determined that a visit to the actual brewery would be fitting for this trip. Not only do they have great stuff, it's also about halfway for them to meet. Conveniently for me it's right down the road from my place! Strong raspberry smell, but the taste was mainly all roasted malt with some raspberry tartness in the finish. It was ok, but I don't think I'll get it again. Sticking with New York, tonight I decided to open up my bottle of Raspberry Porter from Southern Tier, picked up back in Feb Good sweet citrus flavors as well as some dry pine notes in the finish. A very drinkable IPA if you like hopbombs By Wednesday the weather was looking pretty good, so I decided to jump into something Spring, Ithaca's Flower Power IPA Heath and Greg both decided to go with the Fat Dog Stout on Cask. Creamy with lots of chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee flavors When it was dinnertime I went with the Smooth Hoperator to go along with my German platter. Quite hoppy for a doppelbock, yet still smooth With time to kill since Greg was running late, Kim even decided to get a beer, the Gold Lager Upon his arrival, Heath did the same. Good flavors with some alcohol backing While waiting for everyone to arrive I decided to grab the new Big Brother Imperial Pils, brewed for Philly Craft Beer Week in honor of the late Michael Jackson My local brewpub that I don't frequent often enough, Stoudts
mcjaco Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 ^ That's exactly how I'd describe the Raspberry Porter. Meh. Bubba, I can get Bell's quite easily, as it's just a hop, skip and a jump over the WI border. Larry Bell is not well liked around these parts anymore. With 11 hour work days lately, I haven't had much time to enjoy a brew.
Rugged One Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Well with me having a scheduled day off today and Derek feeling *cough* *cough* sick, we decided to make this week's edition of Friday Night Pints into a whole day's worth of fun. I've had a ton of beer gathering dust in the cellar and with most of it being bombers, I knew that I needed some help in getting my stash under control again. With that, let's see what tasty brews we got into this week... And holy crap was this tasty! Just tons of caramel and toffee notes that were perfectly balanced by some subtle hop bitterness that kept things in check. Very nice! Until next Friday... And finally, we head down South with a bottle of Cold Mountain from the Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, NC. This is currently the top ranked Winter Warmer in the world. And this really was the best of both worlds! Awesome citrus and hop notes that were balanced by the deep chocolate and coffee character of the Stout. Definitley one of the best Black & Tans we've had yet! We finally move things out to the Midwest with another bottle from a brewery that is rapidly rising up our opinion scale.Hoppin' Frog Brewing out of Akron, OH. Their Bodacious Black& Tan is a mix of their Hoppin' to Heaven IPA and top ranked B.O.R.I.S. Imperial Stout. And you know what? We really liked it! Lots of nice chocolate flavors shined and I think that the raw veggie aftertaste might have mellowed more as we really didn't notice it. It could have used a little more body but for the most part, it was a very nicely done first attempt at a home brew. Good job Kev! And hey, look what we have here! It's a bottle of Bubba's Blank Slate Porter! Yeah folks, a member of the Beer Thread that actually sends us his home brew for opinions. Shocker! This is a jacked up version of their 420 IPA and it wasn't bad. Lots of piney hops with a huge dose of citrus flavors and backed by a fairly beefy malt backbone. And we still stay up in the North England with the 840 DIPA from the Stone Coast Brewing Company in Portland, ME. ...and eh, this really didn't change my mind a whole lot. Some nice caramel goodness and spice was counteracted by an almost astringent taste of citrus and dark fruits. Maybe next time... Next up, another New England offering, in the form of a Holiday Bock from the Rock Art Brewery in Vermont. I haven't been a huge fan of their beers yet so I was hoping that this one would change my mind. And wow, was this flavorfull! Tons of roast, chocolate, and coffee in a hugely drinkable package. The owners of Bar Harbor Brewing recently sold out to a more financed operation, so let's hope that the high quality of this beer survives the upcoming changes. We'll kick things off in style with the #59 best beer in the world (and #1 ranked American Stout). The Cadillac Mountain Stout, brewed way up the Maine coast in Bar Harbor.
Bubba83 Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 ^^ I know Matt, but I still have to rub the Bell's in your face because it's just something necessary as a beer thread event! ^ I'm glad you guys enjoyed the porter. I was a little worried after you guys had all those other beers that it would be too mellow in flavor. I agree the body needs to be thicker but I'm not sure if I will be able to do much about that while I'm still brewing from extract. I will definitely ask about that the next time I'm at the LHBS. Also, I have been drinking beers on the weekday, just slacking on the posts! So, before the weekend beers, here is what I've been drinking earlier in the week. This was batch 69 which I think is pretty old. Some oxidization was present, mostly in the nose, but didn't detract much from the amazing flavors. Very complex and surprisingly drinkable, sweet tropical fruit flavors mix with some nice hop varieties. The result is a nice way to enjoy the night after a Sharks victory and a Nabokov shutout. Last night I tried another beer from Hair of the Dog and had my fingers crossed as I opened it in the sink. Hooray, Fred's no gusher! A big golden special ale at 10% Lovely! Reminds me a lot of another colorado favorite, Hercules DIPA from Great Divide. Great big malt backbone with excellent citrusy hops. Wednesday would bring another hoppy beer sent over from Heath. My first beer from Oskar Blues, as well as my first microbrew from a can. Gordon, a DIPA. A seriously good dubbel, the raisin flavor is there but not in excess, and it's very complex. A lovely offering from Tomme Arthur. Stupid yellow kitchen lights. What once was lost, is now found, on tuesday evening. That's one hoppy amber ale! Wowza, Speakeasy always bring that amazing dank hop taste with lots of pine and some grapefruit pith. Somehow, the malt backbone still contributes, really good! I love these hopped up reds! On monday I'd have something suitable to celebrate the 7th anniversary of the first day beer was legal with the repeal of prohibition. Speakeasy's Prohibition Ale, an amber at 6%
65skylark Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Still have tons of pictures that I will post soon, but for now, I'm just going to throw up some pics from tonight. The number 14 beer in the world on the Best of BA list, Stone Imperial Russian Stout. Yep, good stuff. I've got to be honest, though, I wouldn't rank it as high as it is. Personally, I think TenFidy is better and The Abyss is in a whole different league for only being a few spots above in the rankings. Still a great Imperial Stout and maybe it will improve with age. I'm stocked up, so we'll see. It is finally here. Odd time to release an Imperial Stout if you ask me, but I'm not complaining.
DerekRx Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Tonight I bring a very special beer thread update. Oh yeah, and now we're engaged, in case you forgot. The Drafting Room was awesome with the whole thing and even gave us champagne to celebrate. and Nicole went with the Creme Brulee, which was raspberry today. Went nicely with a side of diamond and because it was a very special day, we went with dessert. I got their specialty, peanut butter pie. Everyone loves pie! and here's my flank steak of awesome Besides that she got some chicken special Which was definitely the best thing she ever had at TDR, or anywhere else for that matter Nicole chose the last one Oops, left one of the options out A look at the specials menu, some awesome stuff as usual. I went with the flank steak Nicole shows her love of Reading with some Legacy Fantasy, their Euphoria Belgian mixed with raspberries It's IPA month, so to stick with the hoppy theme of the day I'll go with the Arcadia HopMouth Double IPA. Definitely lots of hop presence, but with some good sweetness as well Moving on, time for dinner at The Drafting Room, our favorite place to eat (and drink) and the Hop Bomb is just that, lots of hoppy flavors with a nice malty backbone. Good stuff Good stuff on the taps list as usual, but we're here for their newest brew It's April, time for the Hop Bomb, made solely with Chinook hops Starting out at Rock Bottom in the King of Prussia Mall for their latest monthly release
twisterbret Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Congrats guys!! We are super happy for you both!! Bret and Family
Louise Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Only Derek could announce his engagement in the beer thread!! Congratulations and best wishes to you both.
65skylark Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Lou, I was thinking the same thing! Congratulations to both of you! Best beer thread update ever.
BlackBerryGoodness Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Had a couple Trumer Pils and Bitter American's while at the the 21st Amendment. Around 80 degrees in San Francisco today. Needed to cool down from all the walking.
Guy T. Koepp Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 I'll be damned! Congratulations kids. That is awesome news. Let's celebrate. Anyone for a beer?
Bubba83 Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Wow, this was unexpected! Must have been the Bubba Face Porter that gave Derek the stones to pop the question Congratulations! I hope to drink a Raspberry offering soon in honor of Derek's bride to be. The cool part about both Kim and Nicole is that you don't have to worry about your friends all of the sudden dissapearing from coasters and beer because of relationship obligations, since they are both good friends and awesome coaster and beer fans as well! P.S. BlackBerryGoodness: Where do you live at? San Francisco? I'm in Sunnyvale. I do hope to try Trumer Pils soon, please post more and include pictures!
cfc Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Huh . . .? Wha. . .? I was distracted by the picture of the flank steak . . . Congratulations, Derek and Nicole!
DerekRx Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Thanks for all the congrats, guys and gals. Tonight we decided to celebrate in style, with a festive ale. Good toffee flavors along with molasses, chocolate, dark fruits, and citrus. Good stuff that we both enjoyed Festive Ale, a Winter Warmer from Sweetwater, thanks to Joe
