Six Flags Darien Lake (SFDL) Discussion Thread

Or it would be cool if they replaced it with one of the new sea storm rides from Mack's website (ok but that is a bit far fetched). The highest minimum I have seen most park rides at is 58 inches, so if they got it down to 58 inches then that might go over better with the crowds.

Raging Seas was a Mack Sea Storm unless you're referring to their newer Twist-N-Splash water tea cups, which would be an interesting addition.

Maybe it's just me but I always thought it was strange that Darien Lake didn't have a Mack Musik Express ride since Sleigh Ride is also a Mack.

The highest height limit I've seen is 60" and theat was mainly for Huss Enterprises. CP's Witches' Wheel has/had a rather high limit.

I meant that they should buy one of the new Mack sea storm rides, it's on the website. Replace the sleigh with this. Then they could market it as a new version of an old favorite is coming back..

Realistically Speaking that most likely will not happen, but it would be cool. I imagine it would be quite expensive to import a new Mack sea storm and they could probably buy something from an American ride manufacturer that would replace the sleigh for a lot less money and that would be equally pleasing to the guests.

The 60" requirement for UFO was so that the restraints would still work properly and hold the rider in if there was ever a loss of power while the ride was running which would cause a loss of the centrifugal force while the ride was still in the air.

What an experience that would be! I remember that thing would give you a nice feeling of weightlessness at the top and right as the falling sensation would start to occur you were pulled back in. But stopping all together. I don't think I'd be able to even fathom that! In the end, I really did like the UFO, its a shame it was gone this year. Honestly I'm hoping it's coming back in 2014. It's a classic! And if i remember correctly, I saw somewhere it was either one of the last or the last permanent HUSS UFO in operation in the US. That's kind of a cool thing for the park to say. One of the last in operation. Unless people think its a safety thing... But I digress! Besides, I'd much rather see the return of a classic, than the loss of 2 of them (Raging Seas) in 2 years. Also, Does anyone know for sure weather or not the Scrambler is going to make a come back any time soon? Thats a good ride too and now neither Fantasy Island or Darien have them anymore!

^I miss both Darien Lake's Scrambler and Martin's Fantasy Island's Sizzler (Scrambler) rides as much as you do, but I also miss Raging Seas. I don't know if Darien Lake will ever bring back their Scrambler ride? I hope they reopen 'Cuda Falls next year!

It has been a loooong while since I last rode UFO, but what are the restraints and when were they added?

I remember riding that ride as a teen (think 1980's) where we just got in the cage, the doors automatically closed and we had one small, fiberglass barrier in the middle between two riders and we simply did our best to hold onto the front cage bars in order to keep stable throughout the ride.

I remember holding on for dear life on the outer left side of the cage once to keep from slamming into the automatic door bar on the down-spin....not a fun ride on that side at all. If that cage door would have opened during some kind of electrical failure, I would not have been writing this post right now!

After that, I only rode on the inner right side of the cage so my weight was up against the middle fiberglass barrier portion as we spun clockwise. Made for a much more pleasant ride although you could still feel that pressure on your left side as I rode against the barrier on the down-spin.

Now that I think about it...I can see if they chose to get rid of this ride - even with some type of restraint. Even though they could boast some kind of stupid title about it being the only one in the US...could it be the reason they want to remove it is because the ride sucks and is more painful than it is fun? Plus a high maintenance and high parts replacement cost nightmare?

Heck, they could install a Round-Up that would be just as fun and certainly less painful than the UFO that I recall...and much, much cheaper.

The ride had no restraints; it was exactly as you remember it - you got in, closed the door and stood there holding onto the bars in front of you.

I would like to think that if there was a power failure or something that would interrupt the ride already in motion there would have been an override that would automatically bring the ride down without causing injury to the riders. I could be wrong as I am quickly reminded of the Kings Island Skylab incident where the ride stopped while in motion.

What kind of condition was the Scrambler in when they removed it? That ride is such a staple attraction in amusement parks I would have thought they could relocate it elsewhere in the park.

I think it was in pretty good condition when Darien Lake removed it. Last time I've heard it was in storage (not in Galaxy Theater!) at the park!

I could think of places in the park where Scrambler could be relocated to

. Under Viper where the mini golf course was

. Somewhere in the vicinity of the Twister Tin Lizzys Motocoaster area

.Somewhere in the Ride of Steel area

Impossible, first of all, the doors open inward, toward the rider. Also, the latching system on the doors is purely mechanical. The only way to open them is to pull the spring-loaded pin.

Putting a ride of any kind in that mini golf area would be amazing! Would that sidewinder fit in there by chance? How cool would that be, the viper area getting a nice new look with the addition of a cool new ride! Or, maybe if there is enough space (I'm not sure i never really went in the put put area) have a return of the scrambler and raging seas, making a little mini plaza! Honestly they could just rip out the golf course and place grass seed and the viper would look better.

what potential that part of the park has! (galaxy theater, go karts, put put etc...) but thinking realistically, after they just did work over there in 2012, and then moved over to the new boardwalk in 2013, maybe they're going to do some more jumping around before that area is looked into again. Mind eraser anyone? Thats a pretty dead end part of the park. one ride, a pond. Not too much... All in good hopes for some nice continuations of the fresh new look of the park we've been seeing over the past two years... Slowly but surly I'm hoping that black top will get replaced...

Ahhhh...you're right. I forgot about the door opening inwards and then it had that ball latch at the top that you could pull yourself to open the door once the ride came to a complete stop. Been a long time since I rode it!

Okay Maxim, I read somewhere they were going to use the old unassembled coaster near the parking lot. Was the maze through the old flat rides cool? Do you have any pictures or video for us? I'm thinking of making the trip from Toronto for FrightFest next year , but I want to see some pics or vid to convince me. Also, do they still have the haunted bus ride through the campgrounds, that looks really cool on youtube vids.

  • 3 weeks later...

So after browsing Screamscape, I see that nothing has changed since October 21st and by now the Lake Monster idea is a little too far to fathom being a 2014 coaster. With that being said... Does anyone know of ANY changes to the park in 2014? I Know this year there was some nice work done to Viper's trains and some new theming of the emporium and what not. But In the means of social media, I have yet to see any 2014 announcements of any kind being made. I would suspect by now, if we do get anything new, its going to be announced poorly like in 2012 with rowdy's ridge.

And just because I find it funny, I love how the website still states Darien Lake is "Now OPEN for the 2013 season!" though it says right above there that the season has clearly ended.

They should have changed it to "See you in 2014 for another season of fun!" even if they don't get anything new in 2014 in terms of rides.

DarienLaker - very cool handle . . . I'm from Toronto so Canada's Wonderland is my park, however, I love Darien Lake . . . Wonderland just doesn't have the atmosphere that Darien Lake does. I went to Darien Lake in the summer and had an amazing time. I usually go to Darein Lake once every couple of years. I was wondering if you or anyone else, has any pics or videos of Fright Fest from this year. I hope to go to Fright Fest next year, but I need some incentive to get some of my friends to come with me. Any help and/or comments and pics/vids would be very helpful. Anytime you want to know anything about Wonderland, just let me know. Thanks, HAUNT MANIAC.

Hope they get new trains for Mind Eraser. Or at least repaint Mind Eraser/Ride of Steel.

Mind Eraser and Ride of Steel both need new paint jobs, they haven't been painted since Darien Lake got them. Ride of Steel needs a new paint job that isn't a "reference" to Superman and Mind Eraser needs a new paint job to cover the rusty spots!

It could also use a NAME that isn't a reference.

But you kind of have to repaint it if you're going to rename it because some people will look at red track and blue supports and think "Superman" regardless of the name. A generic name and theme like Skyrush or Great Bear is better because you can rename it and keep the colors and it's a "totally new ride" from a marketing perspective.

Darien Lake could keep the "Ride of Steel" name, but give it a new paint job that isn't red and blue!

Yes. That's an option. Changing the name is the easy and inexpensive part. Painting it is going to cost a lot more. Does anyone know about how much it costs to paint a ride?
