Kentucky Kingdom (SFKK, KK) Discussion Thread

P. 410: Discovery Meadow details revealed!

Recommended Posts

I probabbly make the trip down there once a year for Greased Lightning and Road Runner. I don't really think theres much else to the park now that Chang and Chaos are gone. All I'm gonna say is that if they go GL on us, I'm starting a campaign to get Lightning or Road Runner at Coney. Both of them would be awesome classic options for the park, and I've constantly been suggesting a mouse to my good friends in management.

...Thunder Run, anyone?

Who cares about thunder run when you have the "Beast", "Voyage", "Raven", and "Legend" all within in hour of the park, not to mention "Diamondback".

When I did Kentucky Kingdom back in ('04?), Chang AND Twisted Twins were both open and I STILL ONLY did the park because it was on the way to Holiday World. With those 2 gone, I'm not sure it would even be worth a "just passing by" visit, let alone a full day or destination.

Maybe it's just me, but a "pretty good" coaster is still a "pretty good" coaster even if it's in the general vicinity of some better ones. Not being a fan of a coaster is one thing, but I think deriding something for being close to other ones is pretty silly. By that same logic a really horrible coaster would be great fun if it were close to other more horrible coasters.

If Kentucky Kingdom will just take good care of Thunder Run there is no doubt in my mind it can be a world class ride. It used to be in almost everyones top 10 but now its just a ok ride. It gives A LOT of air.

I'm not sure extra care will bump it up 50+ spots. Thunder Run is an decent wooden coaster, not great, not amazing, and certainly not top 10. I mentioned those other parks because Holiday world has one of the best Wooden coasters in the world, a top 10-15 wooden (Raven) and a pretty-good wooden in "legend". On the other side, you have Kings Island, where, yes, the Beast might not be as good as it used to be, but the park still has a very strong coaster lineup, including Diamondhead.

I'm just saying, it's a weak park with 2 world class parks fairly close by.

Chang is just sort of "meh" in my book. Thunder Run and Greezed Lightning are my babies.

Add to that The Carousel, The Giant Wheel, The Flying Dutchman, Enterprise, Breakdance, Bounty and Himalaya.

And how can anyone forget the Roller Skater?

Thunder Run might not be as good as Beast or Voyage, but it eats up and spits out The Raven, a way overrated coaster that didn't deserve to be #1 even once IMO.

Thunder Run is also better than another nearby woodie, the Kentucky Rumbler. What appeals about the Rumbler is that it's at Beech Bend, the best park I went to this summer. The Rumbler itself was boring every time I rode it.

Thunder Run is awesome, but how dare you say that about a GCI!

Let me ask you a question: Have you ever been on Gwazi?

Wow, having ridden both Thunder Run and The Rumbler, countless times each, I never thought I would hear anyone say Thunder Run is better than The Rumbler...

I think that Thunder Run is the second best ride at KK but the KY Rumbler is on a completely different level than Thunder Run.

I'm not sure what this rating is based on, but every way I can think to rate it gives the win to Rumbler. First drop, airtime, speed, forces, comfort, etc. The only thing I can think of that Thunder Run has going for it is its location compared to the Rumbler.

The Rumbler was no where near a "miss" for GCI.

^ We were talking about the Raven. Honestly, I don't know how you could think the Raven was overrated. It is a great great wooden coaster. It has a good first drop into a tunnel, tons of airtime, great laterals, an awesome turn over the water, and it's a terrain coaster that flies through the woods. I do think Thunder Run is a decent coaster, but lets not go overboard here.

Sorry, I thought I read this a page back, but I guess I was wrong...

SFStL has a lot of room behind Tidal Wave to put Chang in. They might have to re-tool some supports and extend the path, but SFStL seems pretty plausible, even though I'd like to see it go to SFA.
