ParkTrips Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 From CNN WASHINGTON (CNN) — Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry. “The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.” Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people." “We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday. Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow. But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex." "With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly." So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.
niiicolaaah Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Wow, that is the most ridiculous thing ever. More power to the porn industry for trying to take advantage of the government I guess, but if they actually get a bailout I think I will have lost what little shred of faith I had left in the government and I'm moving to a different country!
arrowfanman Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex. I don't know if I find this funny because I'm someone who is absolutely reliant on my car, because the sexual freedom in America was founded IN CARS (or at least in the backseat), or because I simply don't have sex-- --either way, I find it funny! -Jahan
TheBannedKid Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Am I the only one who sees this as CNN making a sarcastic poke at the government, stating that we are too quick to bailout any company that cries for financial help? Though I wouldn't put it past the porn industry to try and take advantage of the government bailouts. Smart way to get some extra money if they can convince people they "need" it.
bigstevet07 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 This is definitely a poke at Congress. (pun intended) Its just like Nebraska Senator Ernie Chambers a couple of years ago sued God. It defintley came across as ridiculous, but that was the point. He wanted to make the point of how it is ridiculous you can sue anyone for anything. Of course it didn't help that most Nebraskans outside his district disliked him.
terrancew_hod Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I know I have friends in the adult industry, but if I was in charge, the answer would still be NO. They get enough stimulus packages when they aren't on the clock. But I guess congress needs a good laugh. Only way they could get a meeting with congress is if they are blackmailing them... you know how those politicians get! Besides some people I know has "businesses" that isn't um... legal to get any support anyway. One girl had to sell her car to make the mortgage... but that's more of the mortgage crisis than anything else. Business is down a bit though but people are having it a lot tougher than people (like the owners of the film companies and websites exploiting and making money off of performers. I will say that I was quite shocked to find out what some straight men would do for money! Terry
dandaman Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 The entire bailout will be in one-dollar bills.
thrillrideseeker Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 WOW! Seriously? I mean I can understand the car companies, but the porn industry? Are you kidding me? ~Matthew
chmilo24 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 You may all think that this is stupid, but 5 years from now you will all be mad that congress won't pass this. Where would we be today if it weren't for porn? Do you know how many jobs are supplied by them? --Chris
ParkTrips Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009 ^ Porn isn't going anywhere, with or without a bailout. The article even said that industry isn't really hurting, but that Flint and Francis believe we need more porn in these depressing times
Dailey Enterprizes Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I didn't know it was April Fools day already. This would make great discussion for The Colbert Report.
downunder Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 You may all think that this is stupid, but 5 years from now you will all be mad that congress won't pass this. Where would we be today if it weren't for porn? Do you know how many jobs are supplied by them? --Chris Plenty of jobs are supplied by them that's for sure - blow jobs, hand jobs, rim jobs and so on.
gisco Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 The entire bailout will be in one-dollar bills. I will volunteer to hand out those one dollar bills to the girls!
VegasCoaster Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Hilarious. If this actually gets anywhere I will be somewhat afraid, but I like what they are trying to do.
TheRapidsNerd Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Well, you have to hand it to them for trying to keep things on the up and up as well as standing firm during a flacid economy. Granted the times are hairy, maybe even a bit testy, but at least the Adult Industry is keeping abreast of what's important. Ok, that even got a little deep for me.
Hercules Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Please. Just a way to get some publicity. If there is anyone who knows how to play the press, it is Larry Flint.
dandaman Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 ^LOL my mind was just blown. Among other things. Where would we be today if it weren't for porn? Missing three-quarters of the entire Internet.
TheRapidsNerd Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 You win the thread. LOL my mind was just blown. Kennyweird and Dino, most kind. Thank you.
terrancew_hod Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 ^See, you IM'd me with my Barbara Walters comment basically saying I was out of control... now look at you! That's out of control!! Got one more for you: Betty White. May she tuck you in tonight in a Victoria Secrets bra and panties... with wings! (Now that's a visual! Look she gave you a kiss on the forehead!) Where would we be today if it weren't for porn? There would be a lot less spyware and viruses floating around in the internet too! Terry
downunder Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 The rock hard reality is that this will face stiff opposition in congress, unless both parties can come to satisfying agreement. Though Obama likes lots of jobs so I'm sure he will support an industry that gives so many jobs. And Larry Flynt could come up with a very stimulating audio visual presentation for the pollies that may get them all the way on this issue.
Mechanic Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 If Bill Clinton were still president this might not be perceived as a joke.
silverstreak Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I heard about this too. I had a good laugh.
