FlyingScooter Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/newssun/top/5_1_WA23_SIXFLAGS_S10923.htm Uh, yeah, roaches are animals. I bet the Workers at Raid are worried about their jobs. (jk) GURNEE — One man's publicity stunt is apparently another man's outrage, as the activist group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is calling on Six Flags Great America to cancel a live cockroach-eating contest planned for next month's Fright Fest. "We have been flooded with calls and e-mails from all around the country about this," said PETA spokeswoman Jackie Vergerio, who studies issues related to animals used for entertainment. Vergerio said late Friday that "we are in the midst right now of contacting all 12 Six Flags parks participating in (the cockroach-eating). We're asking them to cancel (this) gratuitously cruel practice, which is really just a tired gag from 'Fear Factor.'" Six Flags officials announced this week that visitors to Fright Fest 2006 will be offered a chance to eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach, a three-inch version of the Blattodea order that is native to the island of Madagascar, but raised on farms for use as pets and feed.
Calaway Park Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 This company is a money suck that wants attention that really has no idea what they are doing... sorry to anybody who likes PeTA but my view is: PeTA: Ethical my @$$ In spite of what PeTA may think, humans ARE animals, mammals. In other words, it's no different for a tiger to torture a rabbit for food than for us to. According to PeTA, I shouldn't drink milk. Because "WAhh!!! THEY TORCHER PORE COWZ WAHH IM GIVVING PEOPLE MONEY TO BLOW UP UNIVERSITY RESEARCH CENTERS WAH!!!!111oneone." And according to them, it gives us mucous in our throats. [bS. Maybe if you're sick or something but I don't recall coughing up gooey crap after drinking milk.] According to them it gives you gas. [bS. If you're lactose intolerant maybe.] According to them it makes you fat. [bS. Nothing really "makes you fat." Over use of something does.] They're attention getting retards IMO. SOme people go there because they actually care about animals. Yet people found cats and dogs in a dumpster at a strip mall from PeTA. I'm damn sure that every one of those member has killed a fly, or an ant, but "YoU CNT KIL KOKROCHES BECUS I LUV THEM. Flys R DIFFRNT ThEyr R PESTS!!one!!" Like I said, Ethical my @$$ GAWD. They're like the Ropers [Alton Towers] of food... and... cockroaches pretending to be food...
Primogen18 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I love animals and all for helping them and all, but I also eat meat and hate PETA because really they have their priorities WAY out of wack. Where the hell were they during Fear Factor?!
Scaparri Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I was wondering how long it'd take before PETA stepped in. You know, I respect people's opinions and all, but sometimes I just feel like it's an organization constantly trying to get another 15 minutes of fame. I'm waiting for them to come out with hover shoes so that we don't step on ants and other bugs on the ground.
bgwfreak Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Chickens are animals. Oh Crap!!! I should stop eating at KFC!!!!
FlyingScooter Posted September 25, 2006 Author Posted September 25, 2006 ^You want to think it's chicken at KFC.
Twister II Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 This is insanely stupid. If you don't want to eat a cockroach, don't eat one! And I bet a LOT of people will turn down the offer. To be mean, I want to throw cockroaches all over PETA and see who still likes them.
jmccalip Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I don't get it, how is a roach different than a fly, or an ant??? What if termites infested their homes, would they do something about it? You bet. Antpiles in their yards, a fly buzzing around them, fleas! They are all animals. Calaway Park And according to them, it gives us mucous in our throats. [bS. Maybe if you're sick or something but I don't recall coughing up gooey crap after drinking milk.] You're wrong. Go to 5 min of research, or better yet, try it yourself. I don't want to bother explaining it now cause I have to leave, but most poeple are allergic to normal milk(homogenized, pasteurized). Go off dairy for 1 week, then drink some normal milk, try it with non homogenized, non pasteurized milk, and nothing wil happen.
snuggles Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I'm a member of PETA. People eating tasty animals.
Jive Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Roaches are outside of PETA's jurisdiction. This case should be referred over to PETCR.
DailyBugle_JL Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 This is almost as crazy as peta trying to stop the sell of lobsters because we cook them live. Just a bunch of BS in my view. Anything that can survive nuclear halocaust derserves to die. I still dont see how poeple let them get away with this crap. I see no problem with us eating animals. Silent "Im surprised they havent gone after lions for eating antelopes" J
coasterjunkie91350 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 When is peta going to get the hint nobody cares about their views or opinions if they want six flags to cancel this event then get a darn court order and stop whineing about it
Marcus Sheen Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 It's all good advertising for Six Flags though - whether or not PETA's interferance rattles you, this is exactly the kind of publicity Six Flags want in that it attracts another surge of interest a few weeks after the first announcement - it keeps the event a topic of conversation.
coasterjunkie91350 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 you got a good point marcus but its only a matter of time before celeb members get involved like pam anderson and such and there voices have a big impact on issues like this
PhishyBrewer Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Where is that rolls the eyes emotion? Oh... here it is
chavslayer Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I agree with some of the things PETA stand for but im not bothered about cockroaches, I dont count them as animals.
FlyingScooter Posted September 25, 2006 Author Posted September 25, 2006 I think the only roaches Pam would be interested in would be the kind you smoke. Sure, Janet Jackson did a photo shoot with snakes, but even I couldn't see anyone doing a shoot with roaches crawling all over them. Well, maybe Farrah Faucet would...
SharkTums Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 As much as I HATE PETA...I do kind of see their point. How do you define what animals to save and which ones to let Fear Factor use? It is a hard call. At least they are somewhat consistent in trying to save ALL living things, and not just the cute and cuddly animals. I, for one, was outraged at the 'rat blender' they did on Fear Factor. Others I'm sure look at Rats the same way I look at Cock Roaches! So therefore I would have to support not killing the roaches if it will also save the Rats in the long run! See my point? Bring on the Dog Blender though, and I'm fine with that! and btw, yeah, I called it!!!!!
Three Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 It is one thing to kill a creature humanely for food purposes, or to conduct research which might eventually benefit our knowledge of medicine or psychology. It's another thing entirely to kill a creature cruelly for shock value and entertainment purposes. And yeah, cockroaches too (as much as I hate 'em). It is indeed a slippery slope between roaches and rats and cats and such. Where do you draw the lines?
Homer Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Those guys at PETA sure love their cocks...
Carnage Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 In spite of what PeTA may think, humans ARE animals, mammals. In other words, it's no different for a tiger to torture a rabbit for food than for us to. I would hope that humans have a higher mental capacity than a tiger or some other wild animal. I don't think we should be torturing any animals for fun. It's one thing to raise and eat a lobster. It's another thing to slowly dip it in a boiling vat of water and removing it for fun, watching it scream, and prolonging it's pain. As to the cockroach thing? I could really care less either way. But how is this different then what they do on fear factor or survivor? Hamsters eat their own young, does that mean we should eat our babies? Hamster are mammals, so why is it different for us to eat our young?
ParkTrips Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Anything that can survive nuclear halocaust derserves to die. hahahaha so true. PETA pretty much does suck, but so do most of these groups.
307 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 raised on farms for use as pets and feed. So if they're used as "feed" for something, why can't humans eat them? They're going to be produced for *someone* to eat. What makes it more savage that a human does it instead of a bat or something?
jamesdillaman Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 These are not wild roaches, they are RAISED as FOOD, therefore it isn't much different than eating a cheeseburger, except it isn't cooked yet . Many people eat bugs, many cultures around the world would have no problem with this. Most of those cultures are african or south american, which means their skin is black, which means PeTA is racist, because white people food and american food is okay, but something they eat in Africa or South America isn't alright. BS. -James Dillaman EDIT: ^beat me too it, but left out the racism,
