Valleyfair (VF) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

So, to anyone that went yesterday, were the ride experiences on Renegade and Excalibur impacted at all by the flooding? I'm guessing no, since those rides are designed to handle flooding, but you never know.

^^^^ I went to VF on the fourth last year, and the fireworks were the best ones I have ever seen!! The show is a lot longer than usual, and they use a lot bigger fireworks than normal operating days. I would highly recommend you go see them.

I know it's basically too early to really talk about Haunt, and I know a lot of people don't care for it... But for you all who do like Haunt and Live Entertainment, I know some people who work at ComedySportz Improv Theater (where the Hacks! Indoor actors are from) and Hacks! is coming back for another year at the Galaxy Theatre at Haunt! If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It's really funny. That was a total random side note I had to tell you guys, and the only thing that reminded me is because I just walked past the Galaxy. Have a great Fourth!

According to Screamscape, there are footers around Soak City for that expansion. Can some post some pictures?

I'll probably be at the park sometime next week, so I'll get some pictures then and post them on here.

This is what Screamscape said: Park News - (7/4/14) Good news from Valleyfair, as I’m told that both Excalibur and Renegade have now reopened at the park following, along with most of the parking lot. Early word is that survey/construction markings can also be spotted all around the areas near the waterpark as a likely sign that the rumored Waterpark Expansion (see below) is the plan for 2015.

^^^ please I would really appreciate it if someone got photos of the footers and markings. We could then use those to speculate where a new slide complex would go, and also find out if anything more than just slides are coming next year.

Does anyone else think that Carowinds is getting a GigaCoaster in 2015? It sure does look like it. Do you think Carowinds is a big enough park for one? They are getting a really huge expansion and I'm kinda jealous. 50 Million I heard. I wish they would spend that much on Valleyfair.

Based on all I've heard, it sounds like a done deal. Carowinds has grown a lot since Cedar Fair took over, so I do think they are large enough for one. I believe it's actually $30 million and not $50 million, but $30 million should still get them a really awesome coaster.

While VF could be in for something awesome in a few years, I doubt that VF would receive a giga coaster because I just don't feel that CF would invest that much money in VF, and also, they can't build that high due to Flying Cloud Airport. A decent sized B&M invert, or maybe a floorless coaster would go over pretty well in my opinion.

Considering that Valleyfair puts the "Fair" in Cedar Fair, I'm honestly surprised that VF has been getting mostly second-rate attractions for most of it's existence, and I can't put my finger on why exactly why that is. I want to say it's because the park is only open five-and-a-half months a year, but so is CP, and look at how successful they are. Still, since VF is slated for a big expansion, I'm excited for the future.

The total investment over 2 years is 50 million, including the coaster, a water slide, and a few other things.

That height restriction isn't for the entire park, so a Giga coaster could happen, at least in theory.

You do realize that Valleyfair is one of the least attended Cedar Fair parks according to Fun Forward. So, it's not like they are in need of a massive B&M coaster.

Yes, I was aware of that, but there are other similarly sized parks out there that have B&M's like California's Great America, Worlds of Fun. Well, Worlds of Fun is slightly larger than VF, but not by that much. I guess you're right that a B&M isn't an absolute necessity, but I think that one would really round out VF's coaster lineup. Also, it doesn't have to be a massive B&M like Banshee or Gatekeeper. A smaller B&M would be just fine by me.

The expansion Carowinds is getting totals at $50m. This makes them the 4th largest park on the chain. I really think if ValleyFair puts in a huge waterpark expansion and a new kickin B&M inverted coaster, I really do think that their attendance and renevue will go up quite a bit. I really hope the future is bright for Valleyfair since they are one of the park's for "significant growth and expansion".

Well, CGA is a much larger park than Valleyfair and they haven't received a B&M since the 1990s when they had much more attendance. I think you are expecting way too much by expecting something like a small B&M to come to a small sized park like this.

^^ well I think your just downing on the park. If every other cedar fair park have an inverted coaster, including the smaller Michigan's Adventure, I'm sure that one will be coming to Valleyfair. They were marked for significant growth and expansion, so I don't see how you can say they won't be getting much in the future.

You do realize that Michigan's Adventure's invert is a relocated SLC.

Just don't raise your expectations too high for Valleyfair since they will not be met.

You think a small B&M is expecting too much? I will respectfully disagree. A 15-20 million dollar coaster is not unrealistic, especially with the park spending very little in the 'off' years attractions wise. Cedar Fair is financially in a different place than when they bought Carowinds. Something along the lines of Talon could easily happen. If that's too expensive, I hope Valleyfair looks at Premier rides.

This is all at least a couple years off anyways, so I'm not too worried about it. I actually haven't even visited Valleyfair this season

Is CGA that much larger than VF? When you look at the Adjusted EBITDA(see below) pie chart provided by Cedar Fair, VF earns a much higher profit than CGA. I think Cedar Fair realizes that the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro area is ready for a large investment in Valleyfair. Valleyfairs total population to draw from is the same as Carnada's Wonderland (9 million, also information provided by Cedar Fair) Let's just be straight up about this. If you want to increase attendance, then put in something to attract the population. It's not rocket science! And as for "They can't add much cause their operating season is too short", not so fast. VF has nearly an identical operating season as every other park except for Knott's Berry Farm. The only difference is some parks open a couple of weeks earlier.

In its presentations, the Company may make references to Adjusted EBITDA, which represents earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and other non-cash items. The Partnership believes Adjusted EBITDA is a meaningful measure of park-level operating profitability.

*New Topic* I just saw a new Valleyfair commercial air on TV. It was different than usual because they really advertised Soak City. They were saying "two parks for the price of one". So they're calling Soak City a whole different park. This sounds a little crazy, but maybe this is suppose to advertise Soak City to make it more of a big deal, and maybe this has to do with the expansion coming next year.

Have fun with that 15 to 20 million dollar coaster that you dream of. Unfortunately, it's most likely to stay as a dream.

Wild Thing cost 14 million. Talon 13 million. The park your basing your hypothesis on is about to spend 30 million on a coaster.

If I were dreaming, I'd dream Intamin.

I may be wrong and I'm not trying to start anything but I am using facts as we know them to base my speculations. Just because Valleyfair is a smaller park doesn't mean the Cedar Fair isn't going to invest in it. The whole idea to grow all properties and gather a larger base of customers than your competitor.

Actually, Wild Thing cost $9.5 million. Wikipedia has that statistic wrong. $9.5 million wouldn't buy any sort of B&M, but when adjusted for inflation, it's in the $15 million neighborhood, which I wouldn't say is unreasonable for a smaller B&M.
