The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Sounds Awesome! Since when did Riddler's finally get two trains again? Glad to hear they got two trains again to run things faster, and I can't believe what you said about GL! I just could not believe my ears... Anyways, glad to hear you had a good day and I'm also glad to hear SFMM had got things operating well!

no music on either train

Yes!

Then we headed up to Tatsu and waited about 20 minutes (both sides with 2 trains).

Yes!

Green Lantern-- 5 min. in SR line (30 minute regular wait). The cars seem a little more "spinny" now

Yes!

Goliath-- 5 minutes (3 train wait).

Yes!

Good day at the park!

No joke! That sounds like a total understatement!

Yeah! Operations were amazing yesterday! Tatsu was usually making the 90 second dispatch time and Riddlers was too. They got their second train back a couple weeks ago. Hopefully they keep it up! Now all we need is Superman back open ! All the rides were staffed really well too and the ride ops were trying to entertain people waiting in the station. And.. Colossus was completely operated by blondes! Haha. And on GL I flipped in a place where I have never seen it flip before.. the flat part before the last small hill.. and was painful! And concerning the souvenir bottles: They never charge me the 99 cent refill anymore. Since I got my bottle in December, I haven't been charged once for a refill! It's been a really amazing deal! Thanks for being careless SFMM employees!

Next Scheduled Trips to SFMM:

Friday, May 4th

Saturday, May 12th (Gonna be a bad day,I know)

EDIT: Most of the "Three Stooges" ads have been taken down, and Curly's Colossus has been converted back to Colossus and the wraps have been removed from the trains.

Wow, amazing day at the park today. It was absolutely DESERTED, and every ride was a walk on unless you wanted the front, even then it was just a 1-2 train wait. I'll write up a longer TR later tonight hopefully.

Yup today was great day to earn credits and get mega ERT if so desired. The first lot of parking lot never filled and only a handful of buses turned it into a great day also with the overcast, it was sweet.

I spoke with one person who was from Ohio and wearing his American Coaster Enthusiast (ACE) shirt he was here to get his credits he needed on Ninja, Green Lantern and Road Runner Express. He was most happy and also got on many of the big rides but was leaving the park to get to Santa Monica Pier to get a credit.... oh and he had done all this by 12:15 ! ! ! He was going to continue his journey in the coming days with trips to Knotts and Disneyland ... so this guy was living life and doing it at great pace.... More power to ya!

Happened to go past Riddlers only to see it stopped in the main lift with ride opps talking to the guests .. not sure how long it was down but for sure at least 15 minutes while i watched this group of guys trying to climb the Rock Wall with limited success ... but they were having fun trying and I think had side wagers as more money was flowing between them than I had seen in a while.

All and all a great day at SFMM and looking forward to going back again tomorrow and doing it till I hurt.

I can't help but wonder if one train operations at seemingly illogical times have anything to do with encouraging Flash Pass sales. I know that in public we'd get a denial that any practice of the sort would be in play, but what happens behind closed doors in executive meetings about improving profitability and what's said in public are often two very different things. If the maintenance schedule can be manipulated to increase profitability on multiple fronts, then why wouldn't a savvy executive team do it? That is, as long as operations are not cut back to a level that discourages attendance, or at least doesn't discourage attendance to the point that increased Flash Pass revenues more than cover the loss in attendance. Or, more to the point, discourages attendance of those guests that spend the least in the park while not significantly affecting the attendance of those that spend the most. In this day and age of micro-analyzing every facet of clientele behavior and spending habits, I would imagine the people in the corporate offices know exactly where those balance points are at.

^You never know. Like I said earlier, every single ride was a walk on today, yet I waited an hour and a half for X2, it was only running one train... oh well, I luckily got assigned the front row. Anyway, considering I waited nothing for anything today, an hour and a half wait was torture . I'm sure families from out of town would consider spending the 50 bucks or so to ride the "Most Xtreme coaster on the planet," advertised as such.

I recently checked The Coaster Guy and he posted a picture of the Magic of the Mountain museum being gone can anyone confirm that is is officially gone? If so why would they remove it?

That's a bummer. It was one of the few good things about SFMM. A nice touch.

^That's a bummer. The person who dedicated so much time to it and make it great just moved to a different Six Flags park so the timing does kind of make sense. As if they were waiting till he was gone to take it down to avoid drama. Ugh, really a shame.

It does sound like Magic Mountain is doing some backsliding after a few years of improvement. The museum in the Sky Tower was a nice touch--I guess they just didn't want to dedicate any staff time to maintaining it?

That would be a bummer if true. All the little improvements over the last few years are slowly going away.

^ Yup.

We didn't have passes from 2006-2008 and when we returned in 2009 it was really evident that the park was on the right path and doing a lot of really great things. It was more about the little touches.

Sadly now I'm starting to see many area's of the park reverting back to that 2002-2006 feeling and only concentrating on whatever is new.

DC Universe was (and still is) great, but it's just the little things that are starting to become big things.

From Screamscape:

Several SFMM locals have reported over at CoasterFusion about receiving an e-mail survey to get their opinion on the name “Full Throttle” for a future park attraction. One very very interesting question in the survey seems to give away a possible major spoiler for the ride experience. “Lets’s say that at some point in themiddle of the full throttle themed ride there is some kind of tunnel. During this ride you’d shoot into the tunnel at 500 miles per hour, stop short, wait a few moments and then fly out of the tunnel backwards the way you came in. What kind of experience would you want to have in the tunnel? Keep in mind that the ride is only going to be in the tunnel for several seconds before they shoot back out backwards. What should they experience?”

Wow… while the 500mph bit is complete over-hype… the basic concept here sounds very interesting experience may be planned for the former monorail tunnel inside the mountain itself.

Personally, I'm a little bit sad that it might not be a complete circuit; I would take a full-circuit coaster over a shuttle any day (disclaimer: I have not ridden a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop since 1999 )

Alright, here goes my full report from yesterday. We got to the park around 10:20, gates opened at 10:30. We wanted to get there earlier, but it took us a little longer than expected to get packed up since we were leaving for the airport right after we left the park. We headed straight for X2, but since we were one of the last people in line there was already a huge hoard in line so we decided to head to Tatsu. Even with the diversion to X2, we walked right on the first train of the day on the back row, and wow it was incredible. Last time I rode was in 06 when it opened, and it was still just as good. We went one more time and waited one train for the front, and the front is definitely where it's at. Hands forward, wind blowing in your face, it's incredible.

After Tatsu we headed over to the back of the park and we were the first two people back there. Not a soul in sight. Walked on Apocalypse front row, and wow is it a great ride. Nice pops of airtime and the effects were great. Next we headed over to Riddler and walked on (beginning to see a trend here?) right to the front row. Great ride as well, nice inversions. Then we went to Green Lantern, but right when we got in line they closed the ride because people were stuck upside down at the end again... because of this, we went over to BTR, got another front row ride on that with a one-train wait. We saw Green Lantern was running again, so we hopped in line. We ended up waiting half an hour because none of us realized the line split in two for each side of the station... and the ops were just dispatching the ride without any riders on the left side!! They finally announced there were two lines, but they dispatched the ride for half an hour without telling us! You think they'd notice people weren't boarding the left side and announce earlier, but it is what it is. I gotta say, with all the negative reviews of the ride, I thought it was amazing. Sure we only got one flip at the end, but the uncertainty of when you were going to fall and all the forces was amazing. I loved the ride, one of my favorities of the day.

After this, we headed to the front and rode Scream twice, once a walk on in the back and the other a one train wait for the front. My sister and I rode Swashbuckler twice just for kicks, and then walked right on to Goliath. I love both these rides, and Goliath was dispatching 10 seconds before the timer ran out. I was very impressed with operations at that point, until we got to X2...

We decided to head to X2 with about 2 hours left, you never know how long the line will be. Hearing reports of about 30-45 minutes on Sunday, I figured we'd have that or less, since that was a weekend. Wrong. In total, we waited an hour and a half for the ride since they were only running one train... also, the ops were very unprofessional, not paying attention to the other ops and doing various other things when they should've been paying attention to the ride. They were dispatching trains every five minutes. I don't know if that's normal, but it seemed like a long time to me. The guy was right outside the station was cool though and assigned us the front row because he asked us how long we had waited and did this to apologize. We finally rode, and WOW. Incredible ride. Nuff said. The drop in the first row is unreal, and the rest of the ride plus the fire just really did it for me. Finally, after X2, my mom and sister headed to eat some Panda Express while I went to Ninja for one final ride. I walked right on and wasn't very impressed. Fun ride, but I guess that's just what it was designed for.

Overall, it was an incredible day. Walk on's for everything except X2 and Green Lantern due to bad operations. Every ride was running one train except Riddler and Apocalypse, but the other train was just testing when we rode. On a side note, workers were scaling Superman throughout the day, not sure what they were doing. Also, land clearing for the new ride looked the same as previous updates. Hope you enjoyed the report, if you have any questions or comments let me know!

^Why in the world would they put one train on X2? They have 2 operational ones, so shouldn't they have been running both? So yep, they know how to make you wait. Maybe they are trying to fix the music one train at a time and are using 2 only on the weekends?

And wow that's terrible for Green Lantern. The line goes slow enough with 2 sides!
