The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

P. 2239: Superman: Escape from Krypton permanently closed

One word ladies and gentlemen: Deluge. The size of the footprint looks perfect for that area and HH hasn't gotten an expansion for a while.

I Highly agree with Brent (as usuall). The waterpark needs and expansion and needs more secenry. The hype that SFMM gives their waterpark isn't as good as it really is. They have the money to make it better.

But as Jahan once told me on the chatroom...

Sixflags hates this park!

^Well that's because SFMM is not even close to what SF wants their parks to be like.

I'm sure that after Thomas Town opens and the other changes that are going on happen, SF will care about it a little more. I bet many family rides will be added over the next few years, and who knows, maybe a ride like Deluge will replace Flashback. I just hope your version of "care" doesn't mean adding a multi-million dollar coaster.

As for Flashback, it's nice to see that it is being torn down instead of having it rust away, and now SFMM can expand the water park with the available land.

Even though I still rally behind the possibility of SFMM installing a Eurofighter or something completely deep-end like Kirnu, a well-themed area to complement the Thomas area would be nice. As we progress into the future of amusements like 4th dimensional coasters, eurofighters, beyond verts, etc., it does seem like the family element has been stripped bare in favor of high-end thrills. If the Psyclone/Flashback space is optimized for a well-themed, family-oriented area, then that is as good as another top thrill ride.

I dont understand something, however. Why would SF dislike SFMM when it is virtually its most famous/infmous property?

^ Are you referring to Valencia falls? The fountain in front has always been operating. If so, yeah I'd really like to see Valencia falls return, and I've heard its on the to-do list. But, we'll see how that goes.

^Buy 1 get one free is about as good as it gets. If you can find company coupons, you can usually get in for around 27 bucks.

And there's really no rehab schedule available to us, unless there's a current mechanic on the boards.

It seems the colors of Eejanaika and X2 may not be exactly identical. Eejanaika appears to have more of a red-orange track, compared to the blood red of X2.

I've been wondering why people are complaining about the identical 4D coaster colors.

There's a couple differences actually. X2 will have the track red, and the ride rail painted the same color as the supports. Also, the supports aren't black, they're dark grey. If you look at all the X2 promotional items you can clearly see the difference.

^^^^After looking at Viper, I actually prefer the new color. I have a feeling they're going to be using the same red color for both Viper and X though.

^ It didn't even open today. Shame actually, since there hasn't been a single drop of rain since the early hours of this morning. Obviously a gamble, one that I think worked out poorly. But just looking outside it looks like it could begin to pour at any moment, and its been that way the entire day.

Some of you guys keep talking about these improvements like nothings going on in the park. Like you want the place to be turned around in a couple months or something.

This stuff takes years. They're taking out eyesores, spending 10 million to revamp a great ride that'll be better than ever, they're catering to families with a TT, and the parks all around pretty darn clean. Magic Mountain is better now than it was 5 years ago, and people still don't seem to think these gradual improvements are good enough.

Don't expect any miracles, and enjoy whats there. Otherwise you're always going to be disappointed.

I can only speak from my one visit there in a long time. Remember I'm comparing ( and maybe I shouldn't) to what the park was years ago. Is that wrong? Maybe, but on my visit there were trash cans so full there was trash all over the ground around them and the park was empty. It took forever to get served at food counters. If this is "better" than I'm really glad I haven't spent my dollars there. Now that being said I have read all of your posts and talked to a lot of people who are fans of the park and that's why I bought passes for the 08 season and I'm looking forward to visiting a lot this year.

^^ I agree.

They don't just decide right out that they want to add a new ride. There are a few steps parks take. Like finding out what's popular with the GP, finding where to put the attraction, how easy is it to access, what to remove or add with it, etc.

It took CF around 4 years to decide, design and build Maverick and it's more than likely that if new additions were made to SFMM, it would go through a board of directors or something to decide.

Ccron's remark about the planning/preparation time concerning Maverick really gives one pause..well, it makes me stop and think. I should have realized that an acquisition on that scale would take a great deal of planning/gnashing of teeth/shoring of resources, etc. Thanks for the comment!

I don't disagree that theming, landscaping, ambient and direct tweaks, and so forth, are important. Let's face it: a theme park without theming or atmosphere is just another Royal American gig. I guess what I was asking is what is it that SFMM really needs at this point: an innovative thill ride, a ride or attraction that will pack em in, or a well-themed all-ages attraction area? I havent been there in so long, I'm not sure what the mission of the park is anymore.

Anyway, I'll bow out of the topic with the comment that I hope whatever moves into the old PsyBack space, it revitalizes, rejuvenates, and re-energizes the park in some tangible way. (RIP Granny Prix---I'll miss that ride..my uncle Chris had a really funny flashback/trip on that ride way back when..)

Even though I can totally understand why they want to close (no way are they going to get their numbers, plus a bad storm practically shuts down the park anyways), that's not exactly the best way to re-build the goodwill they are trying to win back.

IMO, they Should have opened and waited for the storm to come (and offered comps to return: more parking and food money!), since it didn't start raining until after the park would have closed yesterday and I still haven't seen a drop of rain today...

I can see why the park wouldn't bother operating with this rainy weather. It was going to happen either way and unlike disneyland Magic Mountain's rides all close down if it rains, and I mean everything. The only rides that say open with weather we had would be the water ones, possibly the tower depending on wind, and the oriental express which isn't really anything when it comes to rides.

^Thats not completely true.

If the weathers been good and its sunny in the morning and the forecast doesn't call for rain, and it starts pouring down, some of the rides will stay open.

The reason the park has been closing like it has is because the weathers been crappy like this (well, I got here Friday and basically its been raining since then) for almost a week now, and it hasn't looked like its going to be shaping up.

I've ridden Batman, Goliath, Superman, Viper and Scream in the rain plenty of times.
