The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

The two shortest multi-launchers are currently Manta and Verbolten, and both are over 2,800 feet long. Well, technically, Volcano, at 2700 feet is the shortest multi-launcher, but that is not considered to be in the same league as rides like Cheetah Hunt or Maverick. Even so, it is boarder line sad thatFull Theottle will probably be even shorter than the currently shortest multi launcher, which is so short people often forget that it technically has a double launch.

It is just difficult now to be optimistic in the state SFMM is now. I do not think there is a single park in the world with more than 10 coasters that lacks a world class attraction, except for SFMM. Full Throttle shows that they are not willing to change this anytime soon. Management is not being lazy. In fact, I would praise them for being creative. Few parks have truly been able to come up with so many records while spending so little.

I wouldn't say that they don't have world class rides, X2, Tatsu, LLDOD, ect. IMO are some of the best in the world. Also as many have said many times before it doesn't really matter to the GP, also the GP that will be watching the upcoming Coaster Wars show will watch and think that these are some of the most insane coasters in the world as I once did when watching those shows.

^ They know their demo doesn't care about those things. Why "waste" the money on a flat ride that's not going to boost attendance? It's just the sad weird reality of SFMM/

What, you guys can't for the 400ft tall Xtreme Sky Screamer to be built.

If SFMM really was as in touch with their loyal clientele as everyone seems to think, then why didn't they call it CholoCoaster?

Because theyre choLOW they cant ride due to the height restriction.

I can only imagine they want to do so given their location and competition. Cedar Point doesnt have a Disneyland Resort 60min away.

No park besides SFMM is as intent on opening something new every single year as SFMM is. Not Universal, not Disneyland, not Knott's, not Legoland, not Sea World. Nobody. The idea that they have to do this to keep up with competition is sort of silly when the competition is not opening new stuff each & every year.

The idea that doing this does keep up with competition is also rather silly. Who in their right mind would choose Drop of Doom over Transformers, Green Lantern over Manta, or Full Throttle over Cars Land? Nobody. Therein lies the problem. Perhaps if the capital budget was saved for a few years, then invested in something worthwhile and special that would open in competition with the other major projects at other parks, SFMM would compete a lot better.

^ They've set an expectation that they will have something new every single year, yet have to settle for average/mediocre rides because they don't have the budget for something great. Sounds like a problem SFMM have created for themselves.

^ Well that depends. These attractions are considered mediocre by enthusiasts, but are they flops with the gp as well? Because that's the bottom line. If spending less yet still adding rides every year is actually working as a business model for them, they're going to keep doing it until it no larger works.

^ Totally true. When I lived in Santa Clarita that was the time I went to SFMM the least. When I lived in the valley we'd take the bus up to the park at least once a week during the summer.

Great points everybody. SFMM is in a unique position compared to other "Amusement/Thrill/Coaster" parks. As was said by others, there is variety in SoCal and when SFMM tried to go more for the family market it just didn't work. If this was the late 80's/early 90's totally different scenario but over the last decade and a half SFMM has gone too far into the "Thrill Park" to convince the SoCal market they are anything but "coasters". When people think of "Family" park, SFMM is the last park in SoCal people think of.

Sure, it's nice for those of us who enjoy parks and have been to well-rounded parks to say they should build this or build that, but as others have said, that's not going to get people through the gate. We may be underwhelmed with Full Throttle but the GP is going to eat it up and like it or not, SFMM isn't catering to us.

Exactly. Look at a ride like Deja Vu. Not really an enthusiast favorite, and probably the king of gimmick coasters, yet a major hit with SFMM guests. The thing that separates SFMM from other parks are the areas the park draws from, and will continue to draw from even if they try to go the family route.

Yep. This is (basically) L.A. here, gimmicks sell.

Rumor or not, you decide.

If anyone is interested, I can confirm that it's gonna be able to run with 3 trains, as I talked to Premier at the EAS.

So the capacity, which I know people have been concerned about, is not really a problem in terms of the coaster itself.

^Tatsu and X and Riddler can also run/have three trains...how's that going?

Seriously though, I don't think anyone ever doubted it would/could run three trains, what we said is that there can really only be one out on the circuit at a time.

Seeing how SFMM has run things in the past, I could see them either getting two trains, even if it can have 3, or most likely, get three trains, and always have one in maintenance, and then giving one to another park when they open a similar ride in a year or two.
