  1. I've seen the monkeys at the PNE...
  2. I think you've totally missed what the new management is going after. They aren't neccessarily trying to be a global magnet, but to provide a local alternative to Disney and Busch. They are trying to make that trip to Florida less apealing, I mean, if you can take a couple of days and visit your local Six Flags and have an experience that is at least close and yet cheaper, wouldn't that take some luster out of a possible trip or even a return trip to Florida? They aren't loking to pull folks from the midwest into Great Adventure - they are looking to draw crods from Philly, the Beltway and the NYC metro areas. Because at $3.75 / person for a family of 4, parking become fairly nominal. Most of the time, that may only equal the cost of a large drink. Exactly! That's kind of how we view our local Playland. We can get 30+ rides for about $70 a year, we don't miss SoCal that much on the years we don't go.
  3. We stayed at the Motel 6 in Buena Park on Orangethorpe. It had bulletproof glass at the front desk and one morning I heard someone yelling "Get down! Stay down!" I looked out the door my wife had left open and I saw a guy lying on the ground with another guy holding a 9mm on him. I called 911 and got transferred around a bit. I was waiting on hold when I saw the Buena Park cops arrive. I think the guy with the gun was a bounty hunter, he seemed a little too excited to be a cop. Then we stayed at the Red Roof in Anaheim. It was like 10-15 bucks more, but it was right off I-5, the shuttle bus stopped right in front of the office, the pool was nicer, and they delivered a LA Times to my doorstep.
  4. From http://www.wesh.com/news/7475934/detail.html
  5. Maybe if there was ONE commercial related to some kind of movie theme...but commercials for makeup and stuff that seem to be calculated to appeal to just ONE demographic-never mind the other gender and age groups... The most expensive movie chain is the worst, too...
  6. I got a download file prompt for blahblah.php. When I left the board to check the firefox forums and come back, it seemed to fix itself.
  7. Will it ever make me look like this? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/2006_swimsuit/painting/
  8. If you were boring like me, you could see a movie at Graumann's Chinese Theater or drive up and down Hollywood Boulevard. If you were staying the week, I would suggest getting a Southern California Citypass.
  9. His grandfather was Tommy Douglas, former premier of Saskatchewan. He's basically the reason Canadians have public health care (he grew up poor and almost lost a leg to amputation). I am named after Tommy Douglas-I was born a few days before the Saskatchewan doctor's strike.
  10. My daughter is on the autistic spectrum and she loves coasters. I've got some ADD symptoms and I love coasters. Something about shaking your brain....
  11. They brought in Breakdance and Gladiator about mid-season last year. We now know if we ride Breakdance and then Pirate Ship in succession, my wife WILL puke. I think she missed the Pirate Ship operator, though! That Burger King from what I remember should give you a good test for greasy gross food. Once you're in the park, one of the best deals seems to be the Buckeye Fries next to the Log ride.
  12. As long as a naked Richard Hatch isn't riding beside me... !
  13. I've got a silenced Ruger .22 with your name on it. (lol. After reading that it sounded more like a threat than an offer.) Are you polishing it right now? (While muttering under your breath, of course)
  14. I understand how they could be upset, but They live next to an amusement park! I mean "Waaaah, Waaah, we live next to a tourist attraction." The park should just buy them out.
  15. I think rocket coasters have some big pluses. The launch saves time, so the ride can have a greater capacity. Patrons love the excitement of the launch. You can build a tall, light track that doesn't have to support the drive chain and the pull of a train. Your tall track can tower over the park near a main road-great advertising. A rocket launch could be a part of just about any coaster, I know a rocket launch would definately help Boomerang at Knott's
  16. Coasterweenie. First coaster Matterhorn at Disneyland. Wild Mouse at a fair and the PNE. First true coaster the woodie at the PNE. Rode it once, swore I would never ride it again. Rode it multiple times in a day the next year. First inverted coaster scream machine at expo 86. Hmmm...24 plus both sides matterhorn, a dragon coaster and Big Thunder Mountain Railway (plus numerous log rides), which would make me a powered coaster amacoaster
  17. I think he meant these... Here's some Cod-End-rings...
  18. The line didn't take an infinite time, it just seemed that way from outside.... Maybe it was too small, and just evaporated over time... http://cosmology.berkeley.edu/Education/BHfaq.html
  19. Don't be too mad, Soren. Americans have a sense of humor-look who they "elected" President! And of course, there's Notorious V. P. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/02/17/see-a-sneak-peak-from-ton_n_15887.html After how they "handled" Katrina, do you think they can handle a pandemic? Fearless leader riding a Segway
  20. Ever since "Supersize Me" the only time I order fries is when I split it up with my wife and child....little sticks of fat and sodium...
  21. You've got a brave 9 year old! When we drove to SoCal two years ago, my 9 year old had never been on a roller coaster. We spent most of our time at Disneyland-and once I pointed out the Matterhorn is a roller coaster (after she rode it, of course) I did talk her into Gadget's Go Coaster. No coasters for her at Knott's, though-and I didn't even try to get to Magic Mountain although it did look SWEET from the freeway This past year, she decided to try the woodie at the PNE and later that summer, she went on the corkscrew and all the coasters at Silverwood I know with some 9 year olds, you have to worry about minimum heights. And even the bravest kids (including the big ones) can be afraid on some of the extreme rides. I know I'm glad the restraints are so secure on Xcelerator-it made ME panic and scream like Ned Flanders all the way through the launch (she got to watch from the entrance). So we are going to SoCal again this year (she's now 11) and here's what we are going to do- first Knott's- warm up on Ghostrider (roughly the size of big woodie at Silverwood). then Montezuma's revenge (55 mph launch, 1x2 inversions) then Boomerang, then Silver Bullet, then eventually Xcelerator. I think once a kid can handle all those coasters, Magic Mountain is just a matter of degrees. I know that's a lot of post without too much real info, but I hope it helps some
  22. Yeah, sure looks like a dragon to me. I agree 5 bucks is a bit much for a dragon.
  23. So that private event greyed out is this thing? If we get our passes that day, can we get in? Our spring break is March 11-19 and you guys are only 2 days drive away, so it is possible...
  24. I had a dream once-I think I was skateboarding to Jupiter. It may have involved choclate....
